My review of Metal Gear Online

^^Give back my watch dammit!

Now, having seen everyones' respected opinions of Metal Gear Online, people love it, or people hate it, tends to be the main focus a lot of people have. There are a number who like it and see the flaws, there's no right or wrong answer to MGO. But this, being from a completely non biased view, is my review of MGO and the expansions.

MGO Did feel somewhat incomplete compared to Subsistence, only 5 levels felt cheap, though some of those levels had great replayability, Urban Ultimatum, Mid. Maelstrom, Ambush Alley. GG is simply way too large, even for 16 people, there's way too much playing field, and it makes sneaking damn near impossible.

As for Blood Bath, it's like Kill House, it's far too welcoming of run and gun tactics, and I dislike that in MGO. So the levels was my biggest pet peeve here.

The modes are great. Seriously, I was beyond impressed with how much better these modes were than in MPO and in Subsistence. It was great bringing back sneaking, but with Old Snake teaming up with Mk.II, it's just so much more enjoyable having a partner. And even with just Snake, it's great, and fun to play, hunting down the virtually invisible Snake as he pops out of nowhere and knocks you out.

Team Sneaking is by far my favorite modes, you die and don't respawn, great from Subsistence, but making one team completely invisible, adds so much tension when you play, you gotta look for shadows, look for movements, it's great and highly enjoyable.

DB points make MGO matches way more interesting, being able to upgrade weapons, use your points to score better weapons, and it makes you play carefully because if you spend your DB points too often you lose them if you die too much without kills. I think the RPG is a little cheap, but you know what? If someone earned enough to score it, they earned it.

Still, I really just wish they'd bring back the flame thrower.

Lag, I don't mind it too much, it's bad though. I've died numerous times after respawning due to lag, but the lag really isn't so bad that the game isn't fun to play. So unless it's really so damn unbarable that you can't play MGO, it doesn't really seem to be a big deal.

The weapons and moveset was incredibly impressive. I love the ability to upgrade weapons and the fact that you can upgrade skills, learn choke moves, become faster and increase your skills with weapons and counter attacks. It's good to see that you actually earn rewards for doing good in MGO this time around.

Customization, was cool at first then got bland with the starter pack, because there was no camouflage, or anything really wow cool like you saw in the trailers. Then rewards shop opened, camo became available, and updates were made, making customization more and more cool and fun. I personally love my character more than I ever loved anyone I played as in Subsistence or MPO.

The lack of tactics you see in the trailers, anyone who bitches about this needs to get a grip, name a single online game where people play like in the trailers, then tell me it's a big problem for MGO and not a majority of online games as is.

The kicking, this I will say right here, is the stupidest feature added to MGO. I hate so much that idiots will vote you out because you are kicking ass, or sometimes for no reason. And as a result, everyone will vote yes because they don't care. I seriously preferred asshole hosts than I did asshole players, because there are more of them than hosts.

Now, finally, the expansion packs. We've got 4 characters once MEME comes out, Meryl, Akia, Liquid, Mei Ling. We'll have six new levels, with new terrains and weapons and modes. Now, the new levels and uniques have admittingly made MGO much more enjoyable, it has the Subsistence feel again, with the great Brown Town back in business, with uniques back.

I personally loved playing with uniques on my team, it just feels more like the old MGO did. I think Copper Conflict is the best MGO map out, and I love the terrain weapons on Vicious Vista, the tower, the urban environment terrain, it's enjoyable.

Now, I understand many people are annoyed they have to pay for these expansions, when they quote unquote, "should have already been included in MGO starter pack." Let me just say this, being someone who works, has money, and isn't gaming all day long, I don't give a fuck.

MGO was free for Gods sake, it was free, you didn't pay for it, you paid for MGS4 which was well worth every penny, MGO was free and very fun, 30 bucks total earns you six more levels, uniques, and the more Subsistence traditional feel Subsistence gave us.

And if you recall, we paid 50 bucks for Subsistence, which was only the MGS3 and online mode.

I mean, no one is tricking you into these sneaky expansions to get the MGO feel, no one is pointing a gun to your head and ordering you to buy them all. But the game was free afterall, they didn't need to really add anything else to MGO, it still could've been better than a lot of online for games, the expansions are for increasing the playability. The new levels, modes, characters, all for the experience, if you think it should have been included, than where's the profit?

MGO is free, you seriously expect they'd include all the expansion material in a free game? Dream on guys.

I say MGO is fun, not perfect, but very enjoyable, and one of my favorite online games, not as much as games like Subsistence or the soon to come socom, but more so than other socom games, GTAIV, MPO, and a lot of other online games, so my final verdict:

B+

Reason for score lowering:

- Excessively large levels
- Lack of environmental weapons in other levels
- Lack of urban levels
- Voting

If this is accurate or inaccurate is your call, I just hope this was unbiased and helped express my views at least.

It sucks that you have to pay for the expansions, but I'm still gonna get them since they are well worth the money. ^^

Large levels? Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with the sizes, I would like Blood Bath to be bigger though.

I love the game no matter what, I bought GTA4 when I got ps3 and instantly stopped playing it when I got MGS4 and MGO. :P

Only thing I hate in the game are the players. There's all kind of idiots running around:

- Kids, who say their dads will get you banned from the game (I've met a few...haven't gotten banned yet though, slow dads...)
- arrogant elitist foxhounds, who complain about camping/spawn camping even though it's completely fine when they are doing the same
- Glitchers, especially this one -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0QvkeDy747c&feature=related
- Those who kick when they get killed
- Chokehold quitters/Chokehold kill stealers
- Lag switchers, there's even videos in youtube that explain how to create a switch...
- Then there's these people who try to insult you with poor english :D

If any of these get voted for kicking, I press yes.

Agent Smith entering your system...
I'd like even bigger levels. Especially when the game has 16 players in it. It turns into some kind of FPS frenzy with bullets flying everywhere. We need more stealth and sneaking. LOL But when with 12 players the levels are just fine.

should be doing something else right about now.
Well said! It obvious you chosen your words with this review carefully Departed and I agree with the review. Nearly every other mode pales in comparision to Team Sneak.

I honestly choose games with less players because of that reason, it makes the sessions feel more personal.

I feel the same way, I would like to see huge levels, it would make base and capture much more fun in my opinion.

I like large levels too, don't get me wrong, but Grozyj Gradj, you spend more time trying to find the enemy than you actually do killing them. I like sneaking, but sometimes you're just running trying to find somebody. I truthfully prefer large but confined levels.

Like the new to come Forest level, it's large, has great hiding spots, but at the same time, doesn't take forever to get a kill.

And the Mountain level from Subsistence, if they bring back a level like that, then you will see what I mean. And I will be estatic because that level was best on Subsistence.

In the amount of years it will take for MGO to die, I probably won't be viewing forums.
