Where's November?

'Huge in scale and ambition, it's an adrenaline-juiced-free-roaming adventure in which the lead protagonist Cole throws electricity with his bare hands and slings cars across railway tracks with a quick flick of the wrist. And that's just in the first scene. This time next yearm rival developers will find themselves saying "Our new games is like inFamous, but with..."

In case you missed the unveiling back in issue 21, inFamous begins with a huge explosion that decimates six blocks of Empire City, the game's fictional setting. While many of those in the vicinity are killed - including the city's entire police force - those who do survive soon discover that they've been mutated and now each have some form of superpower. However, all the survivors are members of gangs (Sod's Law's a swine, eh?), who soon take over large sections of the city for themselves. The single exception is Cole. That's you. At the outset he needs two questions answered: 1.) "Why did I survive?" And, 2.) "When did I learn to charge my iPod with nothing more than an intense stare?"

Cole is deliberately designed to be a modern-day, graphic novel type of superhero. He doesn't wear a cape or a giant, novelty belt buckle. Developer Sucker Punch wants him to be believable in so much as a genetically altered man for whom AC/DC isn't a sexual preference can be, so they've gone to great lengths to make Empire City a living, breathing environment. Pedestrians notice and remember you, just as you'd find it hard to forget a gangly skinhead chucking lorries across the M5. There's an ongoing 'crime ecology', which means bad things happen on the fly, all the time, for you to react to or ignore. And, according to game director Nate Fox it's so "very very vast" that they can't quantify just how massive it is in virtual square feet.

And what do you actually do in Empire City? That's up to you. There are scripted events that will advance the storyline, but equally you can just ignore them if you want. The nature of the crime ecology system is such that you can get involved in as much or as little as you like. If you spot a mugging or a carjacking you fry the perpetrator with a quick zap, or simply walk on by. The upside to helping out the public is that gradually word of what a stand-up guy you are spreads, and they begin to come to your aid - such as when you need backup in a battle against a boss or in a gang fight. But a big part of the fun is that you can choose to add to the chaos in Empire City by playing as a bad guy, deliberately chucking innocents around in their cars, or leaving them for dead when you could step in to defibrilate them with your power. Do that and you'll slowly become hated and feared.' - Extract from a feature in this month's Playstation Official Magazine - UK

Trailer from E3

So, it seems pretty much like it's gonna be Heroes meets Grand Theft Auto. I know I'm excited, but what do you guys think?

I think it's currently set for a spring '09 release (at least that's what it said at the end of that E3 trailer).

As to why you've not heard of it.... I have no idea. Been hiding or something recently? :P

This looks awesome. I can't wait until this comes out. I reckon they will be loads of hype for this when it's release date comes closer. I know I'll be getting this when it does come out.

Meh.
Both comparisons seem pretty equally accurate to me.

I can see where you're coming from, but considering how different the abilities are, I'd say they're gonna feel very different to play, so I think there's plenty of room for both games to do well (although it'll obviously be best for both of them if they make sure their release dates aren't too close together).

One thing I'm liking about this game is that, like Assassin's Creed, if you can see it, you can find a way to climb it. And apparently the system for hiding behind cover is very similar to that of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, which I've not played, but heard a lot of good things about.

Hmmm....It does look good, seems like a mix between Assassin's Creed, GTA, Force Unsleashed...And I guess also Getting Up: Contents under pressure (the whole post apocalypse an big metropolyce thing), but we all know it always looks good in trailers. While in reality it might turn up to be a piece of flameing arse.

That's true. Like with TNA iMPACT, was supposed to be the best wrestling game ever, but they messed up. But you would have to be spectacularly stupid to manage to fuck this one up, the concept just looks brilliant.

They said the same about "Turning Point: Fall of Liberty" It was promised to be great, had awesome trailers. But turened out to be a mediocre FPS with bugs up the ass

I was considering it and i'm gonna give it a go solely because it's Sucker Punch.

Well yeah, but you can say that about any game that's not out yet.

But yeah, from what the rest of the feature in the mag said, it sounds like the gameplay is pretty solid so I don't think we have much to worry about on this one.

Looks to me from the trailer that its gonna be rubbish, they show off the fact you can do a little free-running, roll over cars, flick them around and toss lightning as the games best bits, I think it seems quite desperate, thats my first impression, just judging from what I have experienced before.
