Here are some things that I've found to be very useful when playing MGO. Surely some of these things may be obvious, and others may not be. Music: OFF, completely. Turning the music off altogether allows you to concentrate better. It also allows you to hear approaching enemy footsteps and from what direction, giving you an advantage. Rap-around Camera: This should be your best friend. If you can see an enemy coming up from around the corner by using the rap-around camera, then you can pop out, and BAM, he or she's dead. Head-shots (Part A): Head-shots are pretty easy most of the time, but sometimes it can be difficult. One reason is your weapon skill. Weapons like the SMG and the Assault Rifle will have there recoil reduced as you level up with those skills. One trick I learned was to aim JUST ABOVE (not much at all) above there head and fire. Also, even while walking around or just hiding, constantly keep your gun's reticule at the head-shot height of your enemies head while standing. This way if you get ambushed by the enemy, then you are already equipped to fire accurately. Head-shots (Part B): Switch your weapons over to the Semi-automatic trigger setting. Doing this will dramatically reduce the recoil felt by your weapons and give you greater accuracy. I would strongly recommend doing this. You will also save ammunition. Losing your edge in battle: Sometimes if you don't play MGO for awhile you can "lose your edge" in battle. You might begin poorly, not getting very many head-shots, etc. To fix this simply go to the "Training" lobby, and select "Solo Training". From there you can use any weapon and go around the map eliminating the drone targets and getting your gun's reticule back to that "head-shot height" for quicker head-shots as mentioned previously. Monomania and Narc: These two odd words are skills that are very useful. Monomania is a skill that allows an enemies position to be displayed through walls and other objects through the SOP system when you hit them with gunfire or grenades for a short time. The display time depends on your skill level. Narc is the opposite of Monomania. Using the Narc skill be also display an enemies location in the same way, but the ENEMY has to hit YOU with gunfire, not the other way around. Narc is excellent in TSNE (Team Sneaking) as it allows you to see the player when he shoots you, despite wearing Stealth. Utilize your camouflage: This is pretty basic. Wearing all Snow Camouflage in Ambush Alley isn't going to be very effective. Choose your weapons carefully: A Sniper Rifle is not an Assault Rifle. I would not recommend using a Sniper Rifle as such. Chances are that one on one, you're going to loose, as the enemy probably has a fully-automatic weapon. The P90 is an excellent mid to close range weapon. It has a massive ammo clip and has little recoil. The M4 Custom has a 30 round clip, but has more recoil, though it it an excellent mid range to long range weapon. Ducking down: Ducking can save your life sometimes. If the enemy is always aiming for your head at that height, then you've got the advantage when kneeling to take him or her down. I said before to always keep your gun's reticule aimed at "head-height", but THIS is how it is countered, by kneeling. Works most of the time if you're quick on the defensive shooting. Be careful about diving-rolls: Diving-rolls are an excellent way to take cover and avoid getting hit by grenades, but it can also get you into trouble. When you come out of a diving-roll it leaves your head vulnerable allowing the enemy to get an easy headshot. This can easily be solved by holding the "X" button while rolling which will put you in the prone position when coming out the roll, instead of you standing up. Sit and wait: Sometimes it's good to just wait for the enemy to come to you. I've gotten countless kills simply because I was able to ambush the enemy by hiding and waiting for him to come to me. Your Cardboard Box: Your Cardboard Box has been an extremely useful tool throughout the MGS series and is just as valuable is MGO. Hide in the box, wait for the enemy, pop out, aim, BAM, enemy's dead. The Cardboard Box also has a few more useful bits about it. It can extinguish fire on you if hit by an exploding barrel or WP (white phosphorous) grenade. It can also be used to avoid getting trapped by those pesky risque magazines. Exploding barrels: This is pretty easy to figure out as well. If you're in retreat of the enemy, and he happens to be close enough to the barrel, instead of aiming for his head, just shoot the barrel. BOOM, he or she goes flying through the air and you can then fire upon them as they hit the ground. The flip side is also true, your enemy can use this against you as well. Beware of shadows: When participating in a Team Sneaking Mission, or Stealth Death Match, you must be careful about the shadows that your body is casting on the ground. That can easily give your position away and get you killed. The same is true for weapons; a floating weapon in the air is an obvious indication of where you are. Be careful of those two things. Explore every map extensively: If you start playing on a map you've never been to before, simply go to the "Training" lobby again, and select "Solo Training", and you can explore each map extensively finding all the sniping points and good areas for hiding. This will give you a superior advantage to your enemy if they don't know where they are going. Reloading: We've all learned how valuable of an opportunity reloading is from the very first boss battle in MGS1. The enemy is defenseless when reloading and you would be wise to take advantage of this. However, you must be careful when and where you choose to reload as your enemy can also take advantage of YOUR reload time. I always reload after killing an enemy as long as I know no others are around, making sure I take cover first. Stay together: A party of three can easily eliminate one lone gunman. Pretty simple point here. Communication: Despite the lack of effective communication in MGO with pesky button pushing, selective sayings, and poor audio quality with headsets and bluetooths, communication can be a very effective tool if utilized properly. ENVG: This thing is great, especially at a distance. No enemy can sneak up on you and there camouflage is useless. Excellent tool that I strongly recommend using. Shimmying on ledges: When climbing a ladder and nearly reaching the top, your character can shimmy onto the ledge and then hop over the railing to avoid pesky magazines or to sneak up on an unsuspecting enemy. That's about all I have for now. If you guys have any other tips, feel free to post them, duh. Most of the above were of my opinion, so don't yell at me if you get killed while trying to to utilize my suggestions. Thanks, The Tree! Update: This post will be continually updated as new tips are posted, credit is anonymous. |

Hm, OK great, anybody asking about these things or more can look here. Also, don't underestimate the power of the e. locater XD (Or just non lethal grenades in general) Also, you may want to add the importance of the MK 2 pistol, I say whenever you see the chance, use it, you get a lot more points for stunning then killing the enemy. It's THE pistol to use IMO. You could also put something in there about when you should and shouldn't use AA. Edited by Kasaioni, Mar 9 2009, 03:36 AM.

yeah music gives me more of an edge in battle. always turn it off in tsne and sdm though "i hear footsteps" i find when i come back to MGO after playing other games n lose the feel of it that it would be good to join a combat training sesssion, there are loads of open practice games so you can go there. i find it more effective than shooting dummies anyway. |

I like music. One big tip. Hitting your enemy gives them a moment of invulnerability. This, in a way, punishes you for not getting headshots. If you hit your opponent in the chest, a subsequent headshot will not hurt them. You can see this by unloading a clip in to an opponents chest. It takes all 50 bullets to kill someone with a p90 when you're spraying, but if you shoot one at a time, you can kill them in 7 shots. With that in mind, I use small bursts at long range and full auto everywhere else. Semi auto is a good way to train yourself up, I think. Guns like the AK will do far more damage to the body and have an assured headshot kill at medium range. Those SHOULD be used in semi auto or burst. edit: Thanks for the tips, too! You didn't mention slamming the box button to get away from CQC grabs or if you're getting shot from behind. The box is much like crouching, only your head is hidden, you move faster, and you're generally safer. Just don't box if you hear a frag land near you. I have a nasty habit of doing that and I lose my box for the rest of that round. Edited by Jacque, Mar 9 2009, 12:01 PM.

Good guide But p90 has much more recoil than m4 and I consider p90 good only from really close and m4 is only great at mid-range while mk.17/G3A3 can kill anyone with one headshot from over 70 meters away meaning that they're pretty much as effective as sniper rifles if you are shooting for headies. |

I was wondering, do you level 12, 13's and up use assault rifle skills. I started using assualt 2 and I seem to be hitting targers better at long range. But I remember readins somewhere that somebody good said you need to loset the weapons skills and use others. Is this true? |

well I'm level 16 atm, and I don't use AR skills if Drebins are enabled (I buy a grip to the gun i'm using or use xm8) but if there aren't any drebins I occasionally use AR 1 or 2 if I don't need anything else. I mostly use Mono 3, AR 2, Runner 1 if there aren't drebins and Runner 3 and Mono 3 if drebins are enabled Edited by Vashyo, Mar 9 2009, 06:05 PM.

If I may add to this: FPV: Using FPV (First Person View) can give you the upper hand in battles. I'd recommend only using from mid to far distance, as up close it feels to awkward to keep your sights on the target. FPV is not only more accurate, but you can also lean by using Left & Right on the D-Pad. This makes it much harder for your opponent to hit your head. If you're beginning to lose your "edge" in battle, box it, spin round and enter FPV again, this time in a crouched position. Alternate bewteen leaning standing up & crouching for maximum efficiency. Leaning: As stated above, Leaning can give you the upper hand. However, alot of people tend to 'spam' leaning. How can you spam it? Leaning left then right, then left, then right etc, from side to side instantly. This gives you no advantage, as your head will lean towards a bullet in a matter of seconds. AIM while you lean, or lean left, adjust your aim, then lean right to avoid the headshot, lean left again and return fire. Hitting moving targets in fpv can be difficult, So I'd recommend dropping to crouch, take aim in front of your opponent, and lean as he passes your iron sight. Why? Because, when you're aiming while crouching normally, you're quite easy to pick off. By leaning, people will have to re-adjust their aim. This applies to you too, lean and shoot a few shots, if they don't hit, lean the opposite direction and try again. If they're going to return fire, box it back, reload if needed, run forward, drop shot them or lean. Edited by Jaxx, Mar 9 2009, 06:08 PM.

That's a pretty good guide but like what others said, the music gives it more of a touch and you are able to 'get into battle' more easily. Then again, having it off does give you an advantage too as you can here people coming from any direction. But yeah, a real good guide there.

Lay prone and play dead (hold triangle) in TSNE and even the knife will disappear from your hand making you completely invisible unless you're casting a shadow. |

This works for me... When I'm in a gun shoot out, and running at the other person, NEVER lose confidence. As soon as you start losing belief you'll be the first one dead, you're sure to die.... Always stay on top of the game. |

I'd like to add that the AK is underrated in non-Drebin matches and that I'd actually aim in the neck area since the recoil causes your aim to go upwards. Also music helps you focus on the game imo. |

Oh hey, you posted this here too. Anyways, I have another thing to add. Similar to how you can play dead to make your knife disappear in TSNE and the like, you can also salute. Generally not the best option in most cases, but if you can't afford to be seen lying down, this could work. |

The few things I know: 1. Always keep looking all around you... Otherwise you're easy pickings for anyone who just took the long way round. 2. If you hear the click of a grenade, Run. doesn't matter if it was yours or theirs, unless FF is off, it can still get you killed. 3. While Semi-Automatic is useful at Medium-Long range, at short range it'll just get you killed repeatedly. So while it'll use more ammo, remember that Fully-Automatic is still useful, and on occasion essential for your survival. 4. Just because the first grenade didn't hit anyone, doesn't mean there wasn't an enemy there. Always be cautious when attacking, as they can and will dodge the grenade then run back and get you while you move. It's sometimes better to throw the grenade and charge while it's still in the air. 5. Don't assume that because someone's level 2, they're any weaker than a level 14... one character I saw joined a game full of level 13-14's, and won. repeatedly. She was level 6 by the time she left.('She' as it was a female character. Anonymous because I want people to find out for themselves... Have fun.) 6. In the right(Or wrong depending on if the person is on your team) hands, a P90 Can be used at any range. That level 16 player was a nightmare to fight... 7. Even if your opponent ran out of ammo, don't get careless. Or you'll just get knocked out and knifed. 8. In any game, keep moving. If you just stay in a small area, people will either go around you and shoot you in the back, or just group together and bombard you with grenades. 9. Always, and I do mean always, do anything you can to help your teammates. Whether it be simply waking them up and providing fire support, or shooting someone who's choking them, or saving them from a sniper, or even giving them a weapon. If not because of honour and nobility, because it makes them more likely to help You. 10. Having the music off may help, But(Like in MGS4) having music on can have a dramatic effect on your combat abilities... In my case, MGS1 theme in TSNE usually helps, excepting the simulated footstep noise. 11. It's been said before, and I'll say it again: Don't charge in blindly by yourself. Either stick with your teammates and advance together, or use caution and move quietly through. Sometimes the latter means you scare the enemy that was listening for footsteps almost out of his skin. 12. Given the choice between doing CQC choke and a holdup, do a holdup. With that, they can't call for backup, and you can search them without knocking them out. Also, unless they attack from behind you, you have more chance of escape if they find you anyway (As your current victim is if not completely then mostly shielding you, as opposed to the chokehold where your head is an Incredibly easy target. Also you can stun him as you escape.) 13. Remember to wear the minimum amount of stuff if you can... As the body armour, Afro, Helmets, etc. just give your enemies a larger area to hit... The system does not care if the bullet should technically just go through the edge of your armour, a hit is a hit and the damage is the same. So someone dressed like the Raven Sword PMC(With Chest armour, Leg Armour, etc.) Is more likely to die than someone in just a shirt/jacket, trousers, and boots. 14. Even if you're outnumbered, keep your cool. I've personally beaten a group of 5 by myself just by staying calm and accurate. Sure, If you've got it, an SMG or M60 helps in that situation, but even with a pistol or sniper rifle, it IS possible to defeat a group. I've seen a guy with a knife beat a group of 6, so surely You could beat a group of 5 with your rifle. 15. If you use CQC, take their weapon if you have time. In TSNE it gives the enemy a Really nasty shock, anywhere else it's spare ammo/a backup weapon for when the main one is empty. 16. Never underestimate your pistol. It can and has beaten more than one assault rifle and SMG. 17."If you stand up and run around like an idiot, you're bound to be spotted. But if you crouch or crawl, you can sneak past the enemy without being noticed." The words of The Boss, and very true in a battle. With all these walls, small hills, tree trunks, buildings, etc. around, it is possible to get past your enemy without being seen. Unless they're either Very thorough in their search or you run into someone else trying the same tactic. Edited by Snake 999999999999, Mar 10 2009, 01:57 AM.
