My hopes for Peace Walker

He just want's his truck back.

I was thinking earlier about my pessimistic attitude to everything future MGS games and realized something: I'm a grumpy sod who needs to start looking at the positives. So I decided to think about what I want for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and to present it in a generally optimistic way. This topic is me getting it out of my system, at least regarding Peace Walker and the shit state Big Boss' story is in.

I'm going to deal with gameplay first and foremost because that's easier.

Accents for the non-playable characters

One thing that has annoyed me since Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the fact that every single guard or neutral character you encounter in the game has a cheesy Midwestern American accent, despite being either Russian, British, French, Arabic, Peruvian or Czech. The game is set in Costa Rica, for the love of God please let the locals have South American accents. Obviously this does not extend to the mercenaries in Militaries Sans Frontieres, but I hope to have some variation, after all they're mercenaries. Lets have a Spanish guy or an Australian bloke. Anything but a Midwestern American.

Voiced radio calls

Another flaw with Portable Ops was the lack of voiced radio calls and those Godforsaken in game cutscenes. Now I realize this is probably due to the lack of space on the UMD disc, but that was because Kojima Productions have a hard on for uncompressed audio which obviously takes up much more space than compressed audio. The radio and CODEC calls are a cornerstone of the series, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots suffered because of the lack of it (although I will admit fanboy!Otacon had me in stitches at points and the Big Boss information was interesting) or at least the reduced role of it and hopefully this will be rectified in the game.

Learn from the mistakes of the past

Combat and the camera was a severe pain in the ass in Portable Ops. I hope that this will at least be refined or even better yet built completely from the ground up with the focus on it being nothing like Portable Ops.

Bring back the Psyche meter

Big Boss is a pretty fit guy, afterall he's an ex-special forces, CIA trained warrior. His stamina being run down made no sense in Snake Eater and was purely there to play up the survival aspect of the game. His mental attitude on the other hand is something that can be put under the spotlight. It worked well in Guns of the Patriots and will hopefully work well again in thia game.

No weapons purchasing system

Drebin ruined Guns of the Patriots for me, it removed the line between playing the game like it's supposed to be played (Tactical Espionage Action) and going balls out Rambo style. In earlier games playing like you're a ninja paid off because of how difficult it is to sustain enough ammunition so you can handle firefights, at least on the higher difficulties. In Guns of the Patriots you can simply buy more ammunition and it isn't even expensive. For the love of God do not bring that bullshit back.

And now onto the story.

Make some new continuity, not overwrite the old

Oh yes I'm going there. The main problem I have with Guns of the Patriots is the amount of retcons there are in the story (ask kkarbo, he won't mind ;) ) instead of creating some new continuity, think about it for a while what exactly did Guns of the Patriots add to the story rather than what was overwritten or simply changed because Kojima and Murata couldn't explain it? I'll tell you a few: the source of Vamp's powers, Big Boss' first death, how clones work, Big Boss' second death, President Johnson's speech about the Patriots and Chaos, the Patriots in general, Big Boss not being dead and Major Zero, to name just a few.

Peace Walker is going to be a minefield when it comes to continuity simply because of who's in it, Big Daddy B. Instead of simply using retcons I hope Kojima will simply avoid the issue by giving us some new continuity or at least clearing up the issues regarding Big Boss (his age being the main issue).

Give us his age set in concrete

As I just mentioned one of the main continuity issues regarding Big Boss is his age or more specifically the age at which he was cloned. In both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Liquid Snake tells us that "Big Boss was in his fifties" when he was cloned, now considering Big Boss was cloned in either 1970 or 1971 (as that is the year the Snake triplets were born) this cannot be the case. Big Boss was born in 193X (not mentioned but it cannot be earlier as he is at least ten years younger than the Boss, who was born in 192X), which means he was at the most 41 (assuming he was born in either 1930 or 1931) when he was cloned, clearly not a man "in his fifties". Clear up the issue please, it's very frustrating, give us a solid date of birth (28th February 1930 please).

Fix the Fox

Frank "Grey Fox" Jaegar has to be the most fucked up character in gaming history. His backstory has been changed so many times it doesn't make sense any more. Remember Fox in Metal Gear Solid? He was a badass tormented soul, a warrior who is tired of fighting but is unable to die on his terms. At the moment because of Portable Ops he's a wansgt filled ex-ninja who is obsessed with Big Boss. Fox is one of the most popular characters of the series, just take a glance in a topic and you'll probably see a Fox avatar, signature or horribly misquoted signature quote (likely to be his “tools of the government” speech), he even more than Big Boss deserves a story that makes sense.

No switching of characters in story mode

This game is supposed to be Big Boss' story, Big Boss therefore has to be the protagonist. The only playable protagonist at that. For me the biggest flaw in Portable Ops was the kidnapping recruitment system for the sole reason that the ability to switch characters at any moment detracted from Big Boss' story because you don't even have to play as him and are even forced not to at several points in the game. Now I realize some of you are thinking (or angrily typing) wot about MGS2/Raiden!111!1? Well that's simple, Sons of Liberty is not Solid Snake's story, you're thinking of Metal Gear Solid or Guns of the Patriots. Now I also realize that the recruitment system is pretty much confirmed because of the Fulton system shown in the trailer, but hopefully you can recruit soldiers, but solely for the multiplayer features.

FOX-HOUND

Now as you know Big Boss was the founder and commanding officer of FOXHOUND and the end of Portable Ops implies that FOXHOUND was set up in 1971. Now that alone causes several issues because of what was revealed about Big Boss in Guns of the Patriots, that being that he went rogue in 1971 after he found out about Les Enfants Terribles. FOXHOUND was a US Army unit, a rogue Patriot clearly cannot command a unit in the US army (as they are affiliated to the US government, or in other words the Patriots). As shown in the trailer Big Boss is also the commander of Militares Sans Frontieres. Which means he obviously isn't commanding FOXHOUND. Clear that shit up straight away and possibly show some form of truce between Zero and Big Boss that explains how Big Boss can command a US army unit for at least 10 years before 1990, without being assassinated.

Les Enfants Terribles

Another issue created for the continuity by Guns of the Patriots is just what Big Boss thought about his clone sons/brothers. In Metal Gear Solid Liquid Snake implies that Big Boss was at the very least a father figure towards him, albeit a sadistic twisted one. Now Guns of the Patriots shows us that the mere creation of the terrible children was enough to make Big Boss leave the Patriots, I believe EVA's exact words were “He went fucking apeshit” (may not be verbatim) and was thus unlikely to want to be anything to any of the Snakes. It needs clearing up because of another issue that will come into play if Metal Gear is ever remade: what the fuck is Solid Snake doing in Big Boss' unit?
And that's pretty much all I have to say on Peace Walker.

I can only hope and pray that someone from Kojima Productions see's this and tells Kojima “Dude, your story doesn't make sense anymore, risten to this Herikaon guy”.

The reason for this is down to the fact that pretty much everybody is actually speaking Russian, not English. Therefore, the addition of an accent wasn't deemed "necessary". You only ever hear a Russian accent when they're speaking in English (like Granin was, I think?).

I think they just need more radio calls. Period. Because in MGS4 and PO, there were fuck all. Voiced audio would be cool, as well, obviously.

Hell, I don't care if the game is spread out on two or three disks — I want more, and I want it voiced. And I'd prefer CGI cut-scenes.

This is because they tried implementing the 3D camera. Since it's on PSP, they should have just used the old camera system — 'twould have been a lot smoother.

An exact age isn't given, but it was indeed confirmed that he was in his 30s at the time of MGS3, and I'm generally fine with that.

They did say it was gonna be a new type of action. So, it probably won't be recruiting as seen in PO. But, since they are going after something NEW again, it's likely to be shit.

Yes, you can turn all positive Heli, but I'm NOT.

On the accents, that's a shitty excuse and has been since Snake Eater. I can speak German rather well, whenever I hear a German person speaking his/her native tongue I can still hear a rather pronounced accent.

On his age, yeah that's the problem, he doesn't have an exact age, all we know is that he was at least thirty by Snake Eater (since he fought in Korea and isn't mentioned to be a child soldier) which leads to problems (well at least for me) discussing anything regarding Big Boss' cloning and the ramifications of it, for example the rapid aging doesn't really make sense if Big Boss was cloned when he was 41 as Solid Snake was close to that age in Sons of Liberty (37/8 if my math is any good. Which it isn't) and the advanced aging wasn't that bad, switch forward five years and he's Grandpa Snake. Hang on, I'm contradicting myself, holy shit that part of the story almost makes sense now, who'd a thunk it? Or at least it would make sense if not for those pesky terminator genes.

lol?

Because he's a clone, his cells are effectively the same age as Big Boss. Therefore, at the time of MGS4, his cells would be around 70-80 years old (even older than dear Ocelot). Also, remember Snake was supposedly looking bad for his age even during Shadow Moses and the Tanker Incident; both Liquid Ocelot and Fox said he looked like shit (graphics for the game made him look rather okay, however). Not to mention, Solidus was in much worse shape than both his brothers.

There isn't an exact time when the premature aging begins to take a drastic noticeable effect.

No no, I mean that the Snakes premature aging would make sense if the reason they aged faster was simply that they were clones, y'know like in real life. But Naomi explains that isn't the case, they age quicker because they were designed to age quicker in case they either went rogue or were captured by the enemy (whoever the hell the enemy are considering the Patriots are pretty much omnipresent). The only thing the terminator genes explains is why Solidus looks much older than his brothers, they simply kicked in earlier.

If the advanced aging were simply down to him being a clone then it would be pretty simple, Solid Snake looks like an 80 year old by the time of MGS4 because that is the age Big Boss is during that time.

Aye.

I dunno why they needed to add that other shit in MGS4, because really, the premature aging would have been pretty much the same without the intentional shortening of telomeres. Only if Snake died after, say, 20 years or less would that have been a worthwhile addition... but because Snake lived passed 40, well — it was pointless to say "It was a safety device to ensure that the seed of Big Boss didn't end up in the hands of others".

Pointless pointless Blade Runner reference...

Pretty much. That was just one very long cutscene with Naomi I almost dozed off in. Although, they would have to emphasize that fact ( that snake was aging quickly already due to his similar genes with BB) quite a bit, because I'd be asking why snake was so flippin ancient. So i guess the cutscene would still be there, just it'd make more sense.
