Shemaghs/Kefiyeh as fashion; Yay or Nay?

I am the night!
So basically I've been thinking about buying a shemagh, what's a shemagh you may ask?: it's one of these.

Now I consider myself a somewhat educated fella and as such if I were to wear one regularly, there'd be a constant niggling voice in my head saying "You aren't Palestinian, you aren't even Arabic, take this rag off at once", but the one time I did wear one (whilst paintballing, something that's swiftly becoming a favored hobby of mine) I actually liked wearing it, not the full 'I R Terrorist gunman, look at my AK' wrap, but just around the neck and I thought I looked pretty damn good with it.

But before I actually buy one of my own (I've seen a pretty snazzy one on eBay) I was wondering what some of your opinions on the wearing of the shemagh/kefiyeh as fashion?

I think they work on some people, not on others.
I have nothing against them, but I myself wouldn't wear one without specific reason, since I just don't think they suit me.

As much as i like you Heli I am entirely opposed to this.

In fact if this was most other members and this was a year ago I'm pretty sure I would of been a right prick in this post.

Having it just round your neck seems fine by me, it looks pretty cool on some people. But like you said, the 'I R Terrorist gunman, look at my AK' wrap would just be weird.

EDIT: Care to give a reason, Null?

Because it shouldn't be a fashion trend. I think wearing one for fashion purposes is kind of ridiculous. Like people who wear scarves for fashion purposes e.g. wearing them inside.

What's "ridiculous" about it?
If people think it looks good, then what's wrong with that?

So you're saying that clothes shouldn't be for aesthetics at all?

I sorta get your point, Null. Fashion shouldn't be as important as it is. But the simple fact is, people like to look good. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't wear any old rag, you want to look good, everyone does. Thats the way it is and you're no different, whether you admit it or not.

I wear jeans and a standard white or black top with no brand trainers/sneakers. Up until two years ago I wore track pants, until my friends demanded I dressed more 'smartly' so I could go out places with them.

I don't really give a fuck if you are deep into fashion or not, but Heli asked for an opinion and this is mine.

Woah woah woah, calm down.
Nobody's saying your opinion isn't valid, I'm just curious as to why you think that way, since I've never heard anyone say anything against wearing clothes for fashion purposes before.

Really Gary? I'm not a renegade with this opinion. I think you'll find even a few people on this forum hold the same view as me.

Also, I wasn't getting pissed off or anything. I can't convey my tone through text.

I'm not into fashion, like I said, i agree with you to a certain degree. But to say people shouldn't wear clothes and accessories for aesthetic reasons at all is a bit much, I think. Like I said, while you may wear jeans, a plain white or black top and no brand trainers, I doubt even you would wear the most aestheticly unpleasing clothes ever, which i'm pretty sure you'll disagree with. Its something humans do subconsciously. Everyone cares about what people think, whether people admit it or not.

Yes, really. I've heard people say that certain things are inapropriate for certain places/times (such as hats indoors, which I never understood the problem with), but to say that wearing things for how they look is a bad thing in itself is very odd to me.

I see. Fair enough. It was really only the last bit that made you sound pissed off.

Of course I care what people think, that has nothing to do with me wearing plain clothes. I wear plain clothes because accessories and brand names mean nothing to me. This isn't some sort of faux moral nonsense, this is just what I've grown to be like. I was there with every other kid in the playground wearing the same nike total 90's to play football with. Also short of a month ago, I had a red faux hawk for aesthetic reasons, I won't deny it. It was also half a dare a while ago as well, but I kept it because I liked it. But I think a Kefiyeh as a fashion statement is a whole different kettle of fish, it reminds me of celebs going through fad religions.

I'm not sure what you want from me? You can question what I think all day long you are just going to get the same answer written in a different way.

Well your first 2 posts seem to suggest that there's more to it than just being something you wouldn't wear.

If it isn't a moral issue and you care what people think, whats the problem with someone wearing certain clothing and accessories because they care what people think? You haven't given a reason for disliking people wearing clothes for aesthetic reasons - thats what I want from you.

EDIT: There's nothing religious about a piece of cloth.

I tend to let form follow function as far as attire.
For example; I like leather jackets, but you will seldom see me wear one in the Summer in Texas.

When the function is required for an item to be used, then form may follow.
If it's sunny outside and you need a hat, it doesn't have to be ugly as Hell. Get my drift?

When I go to a club or some such, I wear more spiffy attire, because the environment generally calls for that.
I don't see anything wrong with Heli wearing that around, but may I ask what the functional purpose of it is in England? If it's purely aesthetics, then no harm, no foul and to each his own.

I've already said because I think it's superficial. It ties into that whole world of fashion that I despise, having to wear a certain style of clothing to get into a certain club kind of thing. It annoys me. I really don't see why I'm being given the grand inquisition for an opinion that isn't outlandish at all. I reaaaaalllly don't want to pull the 'Roy you are so argumentative' a'la kkarbo line..

I also never said there was anything religious about 'a piece of cloth' I just said the practice of wearing something that meant something to a group of people and turning it into a fashion statement is just shallow and reminds me of celebs using religions as fashion accessories.
