Buddhist leader Defending Violent Games?; The new gamer religion?

Midnight Leader

Short story: Trinley Dorje (24), current Karmapa Lama and maybe future successor to the Dalai Lama, he's the only senior Buddhist leader recognized by the governments of Tibet, India, and China is all about listening to hip hop on his iPod and believes playing violent Vidya Games is actually therapeutic. I must say I'm really starting to dig this guy.

Long Interview with: Official source from "The Times of India".

Shortish but sweet story from gaming site qj.net

QJ's Video Game section

Buddhist leader believes violent video games can be therapeutic
Posted Sep 20, 2009 at 02:55PM by Glenn M.

Trinley Dorje - Don't let his robes fool you - you may have more in common with Trinley Dorje than you think. He's only 24, listens to hip-hop on his iPod, and enjoys a good round violent video games.

Yes, you read that right - this Buddhist leader enjoys good old-fashioned pwnage as much as the next guy. In fact, despite his disposition, Dorje believes that this type of games can even be therapeutic.

See? He's a pretty cool guy. He's not much different from you and me, except that he's the Karmapa Lama, the only senior Buddhist leader recognized by the governments of Tibet, India, and China. He may even succeed the Dalai Lama one day.

As a Buddhist leader and a human being, Dorje doesn't believe that playing violent games goes against his beliefs. "Well, I view video games as something of an emotional therapy, a mundane level of emotional therapy for me. We all have emotions whether we're Buddhist practitioners or not, all of us have emotions, happy emotions, sad emotions, displeased emotions and we need to figure out a way to deal with them when they arise," he said.

He goes on:

Quote:

So, for me sometimes it can be a relief, a kind of decompression to just play some video games. If I'm having some negative thoughts or negative feelings, video games are one way in which I can release that energy in the context of the illusion of the game. I feel better afterwards.

The aggression that comes out in the video game satiates whatever desire I might have to express that feeling. For me, that's very skillful because when I do that I don't have to go and hit anyone over the head.

When asked if meditation should be taking care of the negative feelings, Dorje simply replies, "No, video games are just a skillful method." The interview with The Times of India didn't yield which games the Karmapa Lama prefers playing and what system he plays them on, but it can be fun guessing. I'd sure like to try his monk mad skills on Tekken!

This guy is really something, he ought to have a little chat with Jack Thompson. It's a refreshing change to all the anti-violent game sentiments we usually get. What do you guys think?

About time we get some positive faces representing/defending our hooby eh? One day all the old farts will be rotting corpses and we'll be the next in line to seize control. Has our Day come bothers and sisters?

No they are not. If they are against video games then they are ignorant and unintelligent.

And religious leaders are naturally intelligent. He didn't sit an exam for this, Roy. Some babbling monks decided he would be their new leader.

Jack Thompson, although a massive Joke was a Lawyer. Stupid people do not pass law school and become lawyers.

Dave Grossman was a Military Scientist. Hillary Clinton was a Lawyer. Many others. Choosing to ignore the truth =/= unintelligent.

I really don't think this dude is intelligent.

Hell, he believes that he may have been a toad in a past life, and that we're all going to a place of eternal bliss. I don't call that intelligent.

Well Buddhism isn't like most Religions, don't generalise. I mean, I have a lot of respect for Buddhism and I would think that they would elect someone intelligent as their leader.

Judging something you haven't got a clue about is unintelligent. I don't care if Jack Thompson passed law fucking school, he's an unintelligent fool.

Shit. If YOU have respect for it, then it must be right. I know quite a bit about Buddhism, alright? It's no different than any other religion, and I honestly could not care how much you like it. They, like all religions, pick who they deem to be the right person for it. Hell, in fact, the Vatican has more intelligent choices for people than some average kid. The Popes have to learn variousl languages, and recite scriptures by memory. Learn thousands of years of history, learn politics, learn economics.

This kid doesn't.

Thats a bit harsh, generalising Religion like that. And what the hell are they supposed to do? Pick the person who they deem to be the wrong person? :/

Plus, I'm talking about intelligence, not knowledge, kkarbo.

It's good to see religious leaders (stupid concept) getting involved with contemporary society, but let us not be under any illusions, this guy is going to be as much of a shit stain on the world as any other Dalai Lama.

For the most part all religious leaders are unnecessary in our modern society but I guess they're gonna stick around either because of tradition/force of habit or as long as people have questions about Life and Death. Since they're gonna hang around, probably way longer than we'll live, it's nice that maybe general opinions on gaming will change and some of the prior ignorance's forgotten, hopefully all the other fanatical religions will follow in these footsteps.

I remember when I'd go to church as a kid the Pastor would say that the people who made these games got Satanist and other folks from the dark side to put spells on the video games so kids could get addicted and enjoy murder :/ .
