Good idea to make this topic. To start, I'd like to hear what people think when they hear ´third world countries`. For what I've seen people have a wrong idea of what that means so I'd like to hear what people think about it. |

I think they need my help, other than this British schools (or mabye just mine) dont teach much history other than Nazi Germany and the world wars. And the little politics they do teach you, dont tell you very much at all. |

You clearly didn't go to Shelfield Sports and Community College (ignore the obtuseness, I know you didn't). I would have killed for the chance to study something interesting rather than four-ish yeahs of Civil Rights, the Weimar Republic and the Suffragettes (not that they aren't interesting subjects, but it really starts to wear thin on a teenage boy when you study it consecutively year after year after year). When I think of a third world country I think of the Sudan. I think of Aceh (and yes, I actually had heard of it before MGS4). I think of Rwanda in the years before and the years immediately after the massacres. Places where the odds are leveled against you for living past your 30th birthday or even living something regarding a normal life by Western standards. |

I find the Cold War really interesting, Obviously I'm happy it didn't end in war but I find the idea of two huge world super powers being rivals to each other in races in terms of technology and economy kinda exciting. |

I don't think so. It used to be, but that kinda went tits up. It's BBF's with a superpower though. I consider it a major power due it's weight with the UN and NATO, but not a superpower. |

Yeah, good luck with that. The United Kingdom is a great place to live, I've thrived here, much as I would have if I remained in the US. But the United Kingdom isn't a superpower. |

A great country to live should be one were you don't get robbed and you can walk without worrying about the people around you. Your opinion is different than Null's, Helikaon. Unless, of course, you mean a great country when you talk about economy and politicts. |

No? Imagine that. A guy who lives in London has a different opinion than a guy living in Wolverhampton. I've also had many experiences of mugging and other 'petty' (I hate that expression, there's nothing petty about an asshole demanding that you give him your possessions for no other reason than he'll beat you up) crime. Hell I'm a criminal (though I don't consider myself one, I'm not hurting anyone) because I buy and use drugs. But I regard the United Kingdom as a great place to live, never in the six-ish years I've been living here have I once though "Man this place is terrible for me". I've got a great job (two actually), a great apartment, I've been in university for a year and am switching to another one next September, I've got great friends and I've generally got a great life here. That's my experience of living in England. There's bad things about the UK. The police are completely useless (my student house got burgled a month ago, police have done nothing despite there being surveillance cameras covering the entrances to our place and a description of one of the perpetrators by one of my house mates). As far as I can tell there's no significant integration between different ethnic communities beyond my being able to find twenty different fast food outlets on the same street. There's a terrible yob culture prevalent. But I wouldn't switch my life with someone who lives in say China (though the views would be infinitely better), Kazakhstan or Mongolia. UK is A'OK. |

The UK isn't a superpower. It could have been classed as one during the height of it's power in the 1800's and such, during the British Empire, but the term 'superpower' only came around during the cold war, and it only applied to the US and the USSR. The only current superpower is the US, but China could be the next superpower. And i'll say again, Argentina is not a 3rd world country. It's not close. There isn't widespread famine, there aren't terrorist groups in power. Arguably it could be called a second world country, and it certainly isn't a great country thanks to North American persecution of the South, but Latin America has come a long way since the Cuban revolution and the Contra affair.
Well, it's held on a leash by America. (Quite Ironic, given the history) Edited by £, Oct 26 2009, 07:27:04 AM.

Well yeah, it isn't totally free, nothing is. But we aren't charged for our healthcare by hospitals and stuff, you don't have to pay upfront for anything (except prescriptions after 18, unless your a student, OAP or on benefits). |

Bulgaria's a horrible country. Economy is not only fucked but people keep abusing natural resources more than any other in the world. In short, most of us are selfish pigs. Plus, we get payed approx 500 standard wage in our currency. Buying a product like a videogame costs 125. A new console is 599. TV's for 2 gran. You get the idea. Ridiculous. We also have most piracy than anywhere else in the globe. |
