(CNN) — The leader of a group of African-American converts to Islam was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan, Wednesday, federal authorities said.

Luquman Ameen Abdullah was one of 11 men charged Tuesday with conspiracy to commit federal crimes, including theft from interstate shipments, mail fraud to obtain the proceeds of arson, illegal possession and sale of firearms, and tampering with motor vehicle identification numbers, the FBI said in a news release.

He had been seeking to establish a separate Sharia-law state in the United States, the FBI said.

Eight of the men have been arrested. At one location, four of the suspects surrendered, but Ameen Abdullah fired his weapon instead, the release said. "An exchange of gunfire followed and Abdullah was killed," it said.

Also killed was an FBI dog.

In a 43-page criminal complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan and unsealed Wednesday, authorities said the arrests were made based on information gleaned from confidential sources identified only as S-1, S-2 and S-3.

"S-1 heard Abdullah encourage his followers to 'pick up guns and do something' rather than try to achieve their goals through peaceful means," the complaint said.

S-2 recorded a conversation on December 12, 2007, in which Abdullah said, "I got some soldiers with me, so it's not like I, I don't have, you know, nothing. Brothers that I know would, you know, if I say 'Let's go, we going to go and do something,' they would do it," the complaint said.

S-3 said that, on March 21, 2008, Luqman Abdullah told him "that the FBI is the enemy of Islam," the complaint said. "Abdullah stated something to the effect, 'If they are coming to get me, I'll just strap a bomb on and blow up everybody.'"

The other men charged were identified as Mohammad Abdul Bassir, aka Franklin D. Roosevelt Williams; Muhammad Abdul Salaam; Abdul Saboor; Mujahid Carswell; Abdullah Beard; Mohammad Philistine; Yassir Ali Khan; Adam Hussain Ibraheem; Garry Laverne Porter; and Ali Abdul Raqib.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Detroit said hearings were scheduled for Thursday at 1 p.m. ET for Salaam, Saboor, Porter, Beard, Ibraheem and Raqib.

The defendants "are members of a group that is alleged to have engaged in violent activity over a period of many years, and known to be armed," the FBI said.

The complaint was filed by the FBI's counter-terrorism squad in the Eastern District of Michigan.

wow this is interesting. especially since i have not seen the story on air, very unusual for cnn. did anyone else get a chill that the codename for one of their informants was S-3? (S3 plan MGS2)

*shrugs* S2 is from Evangelion. Interesting coincidence though.

He had been seeking to establish a separate Sharia-law state in the United States, the FBI said.

^That part struck me — how exactly would he have established that state? It implies massive number of people in either his command or shared philosophy. having said, even if he's gone, than perhaps there are others?

"As long as there are people, there will always be war."

^Best point of view I've ever heard in regards to humanity. And, I've heard and read many. People always have some justification for murder, for violence, and, no matter how far we come along in the years to come, we'll always fight one another. For whatever reason.

true. i wonder though... will they move their operations? its probable that either the remaining suspects have fled the state... maybe even the country. and why haven't we heard more on this? i looked through CNN, FOX, ABC and so far there has been no broadcast about this. maybe the FBI is trying to keep this quiet and if so for what reason?

: ( sorry
Dearborn-Detroit Michigan is a Middle Eastern hub in America and it stretches across the border through Southern Ontario. Dense parts of Michigan and Ontario are notorious for having Islamic populations. The driving distance between Detroit and Toronto is approx 4 hours and the suburban demographics are similar.

At any rate, most of this looks story looks fishy. Those charges can be put on just about anyone. It's easy to end up on a watch or no-fly list, and anybody on the list is a potential terrorist.

It's the things you don't hear about that you have to think about.

If the op was legit, good on for the FBI for actually doing their job. But taking down one cleric isn't going to do much in the long run, the most dangerous opponent in a war fueled by religion is a teacher who can twist words and meaning to incite the masses, it's the people he used to preach to that the FBI should be dealing with. Although if they managed to get all of them (radical clerics) at once, without killing them, then it would be a major victory. Not gonna happen though.

If the FBI want to kill Raving radical Clerics, there's a few buildings outside the Vatican with a nice clear view of the pope's windowsill.

Oh and they'd have to keep killing every pope. Oh and every president because they're all devout Christians or so they say.

Even Bill Clinton, who is about as religious as me, has had a 'religious experience' Probably in the same day he didn't inhale.

Anyway, I don't really care. The FBI are just as dangerous as radical Islamic terrorists. Them killing one isn't a great day for freedom justice or safety of the American people or of the world.

for once we can agree on something! well not the religious stuff i just don't see how this raid solved anything i mean yeah one less crazy to worry about but it doesn't look like it stopped more people from becoming radicals and they'll probably view this guy as a martyr.

It didn't solve anything.

America has a search and destroy policy on anyone it doesn't like or sees as a threat.

I'm shocked it didn't make the news either, it would make great propaganda.

well... yeah poor dog but it was probably the FBI's fault since they brought the dog in... hmm but i guess it was better that a dog died rather than an Agent.
