Psshh, they most likely helped fund the game somehow, but I could be wrong though maybe Snake is going to be all over their merchandise? *shrugs* (beside the cans)

I really dont see a problem with product placement, and Kojima doesn't need to justify the use of it in Peace Walker.

I like the idea of quirky recovery items, such as the Calorie Mate in MGS3 or Regainer in MGS4. If anything, it just adds to the authenticity, despite the items ocurring in areas they wouldn't be expected. I much prefer this to made-up brands - and there would likely be brands regardless

I wouldn't say I'm completely enthrawled by the Monster Hunter tie in. I've never played Monster Hunter, looks a bit silly - no matter, I wont play it. I mean, it's hardly going to contribute to the story, and is in no way worse than Snake vs Monkey in MGS3. I didn't like that, I didn't play it much, I certainly didn't bitch about it on the internet...

Adding the Walkman in is a sweet idea. I loved using the iPod in MGS4, the Walkman is just another optional perk, the fact that they may be getting additional funds from the brands is just gravy

Anyway, I think people complain too much about product placement. Its not compromising the games integrity by including, it's just good business sense, and lends to authenticity

im a bit of two minds about this....

on one hand, product placement DOES create a more grounded in reality sense of setting if done right. and hell, any way to get extra cash in video games should be applauded, those shits are expensive to make!

on the other hand, its not done right in peace walker. mountain dew and doritos in the 70s? cmon now. not tomention it kinda makes this feel NASCAR-y.I guess it wouldnt bother me so bad if all the tie-ins were just subtly in the game, not 'OH LOOK AT US WE HAVE WALKMANZ!!!!!"

I ask myself is this what I want to stumble across in an MGS game?
Spoiler: click to toggle

And the answer is; yes. It lightens the mood to find a well placed bag of Doritos for you to eat as a little treat while in the jungle :D

Exactly, it's right in line with MGS humour.

Honestly some of the views on this forum make absolutely no sense, people just contradicting themselves.

YES IT DOES GRANNY! :(

The overabundance of products in this game is becoming absurd. The ipod from mgs4 was great in my opinion, and the walkman transition is fine, but i'd rather not find a pack of doritos in the jungle etc mkay?

So you don't like posters in lockers, the posters of Akina, Regain in MGS4, Otacon waving an Apple Laptop in your face while saving the world, calorie mate, noodles, etc etc?

And even if you didn't like that stuff, people just need to achknowledge is not exclusive to Peace Walker. It's been a running gag throughout the series.

I don't even try. Why would I?

How does it damage the integrity of the game? No wait, how does a game have integrity?

The man in a pickle suit.
There was a PS1 in MGS1.

And Sunny was playing Penguin Adventure on her PSP.
Then again, Penguin Adventure was not released for the PSP...
I guess even Sunny uses custom firmware. :D

Exactly. Never really bothered me to be honest. I always thought it was one of the things that made MGS what it is.

Let's see.... lame ration or Doritos? Cool Ranch plz ^_^

Missing from all this talk of tie-ins is mention of money exchanging hands. It's actually possible that the tie-ins are no-money deals.
Somehow I doubt that. Even if it doesn't have much to do with the game, you really think Konami will get no money from Mountain Dew producing cans with their characters faces plastered on them?

Yeah. I don't think the decision was purely a marketing move and "selling out" like some, but there's probably some exchange of cash in there somewhere. More of an additional incentive than anything.

*Looks over post* I never said this was just exclusive to peace walker. I did say there was an 'overabundance' of it in this installment. I'm just disappointed in Kojima having to sensationalise the amount of advertising in-game, it never happened it 1,2,3 but the extent of it in 4 was acceptable, but this is completely new ball game.

We'll see if this comes back to bite when it's released.

Well, although the Dew and Doritos were anachronisms, MGS3 did something similar with the Calorie Mate (which apparently makes a return in this game.).

Besides, Kojima isn't the first one to do product placement in a game that technically takes place in a time period where those items didn't exist. I remember how in "Tropic Thunder" (Yeah, I watched it, uncut, let us speak no more of it.) that one of the main characters, Alpa Chino, while playing as Motown, states in a form of product placement that he acquired the energy drink "Booty Sweat" from a merchant on... well, some location that's apparently in Vietnam. I guess Da Nang or something? Anyways, this kind of thing has happened before, and considering how Ben Stiller wrote the movie based on his own experiences when he was working with actors for Apocalypse Now, I'm going to guess that that movie had something similar.

It did happen in all the MGS games, but yes, not to the extent of Peace Walker. It doesn't in any way damage the games integrity though, that's the issue.
