The man in a pickle suit.
As long as I don't see Outer Heaven sponsored by Mountain Dew, I'll be fine with it.

I actually find it kind of funny. And it's not like they're forcing you to use the items. I'll probably use them for CoOps and stuff like that.
I'm sorry for being a cunt.

MGS always had weird shit in it. Easter Island Heads for example. People didn't complain much about the regain drink because its more of a Japanese thing. Now that it's doritos and we munch on them a lot its somehow worse. If it was Monster or Bawls then I'm sure people would say the integrity is low. And then grab a can and drink it while playing the game.

WTF cardboard boxes! He can even get shipped to different places in some games!? This game is whoring out to the shipping industry!

So you don't like posters in lockers, the posters of Akina, Regain in MGS4, Otacon waving an Apple Laptop in your face while saving the world, calorie mate, noodles, etc etc?

And even if you didn't like that stuff, people just need to achknowledge is not exclusive to Peace Walker. It's been a running gag throughout the series.

*Looks over post* I never said this was just exclusive to peace walker. I did say there was an 'overabundance' of it in this installment. I'm just disappointed in Kojima having to sensationalise the amount of advertising in-game, it never happened it 1,2,3 but the extent of it in 4 was acceptable, but this is completely new ball game.

We'll see if this comes back to bite when it's released.
It did happen in all the MGS games, but yes, not to the extent of Peace Walker. It doesn't in any way damage the games integrity though, that's the issue.
Granin you've misunderstood my post; there were in-game ads in 1,2,3 yes, but it was never publicised to this extent. Not that 'oh, there was no product placement in previous instalments.' And It has affected the games integrity, at least based on what I've seen so far. We agree to disagree I guess.

No offense, but I don't know what peace is. Never felt what it's like.
Yes there's always been product placement in the series, but it's been cool shit like playstations and instant ramen. This is Doritos and Axe and Mountain Dew. Laaame.
I think this is dumb, and trying to rationalise it away as 'surprising!' is even more so, but it isn't going to get in the way of my enjoyment of the massive amounts of awesome things in the game.

i honestly think that Kojima would try to put these things in the game even if Konami didn't get compensation for it.

It's hilarious. And it doesn't seem to intrusive into Kojima's artistic vision about the main plot/game, this stuff is just extra.

People saying "...boo product placements, product placement baddd" are idiots. Honestly, if these companies are willing to fund Kojima's game which in turn would result in a better game, I'd say bring in as many stupid tie-ins as possible, just as long as it doesn't intrude into the main plot/artistic vision.

It does break the 4th wall a bit. But since when has MGS had a 4th wall?

Good point.

Also, I did some research, and it is theoretically possible that (aside from Monster Hunter) the products within the game do exist during that time period.

Mountain Dew was first made in the 1940s in North Carolina, and first marketed in Knoxville, Kentucky and distributed by Pepsico. The logo on the can, however, is the 1999-2005 logo, and the T-shirt sported the 2005-2008 design or a similar design (well, at least it isn't the current "Mtn Dew" logo).

Doritos were first made and distributed in 1964, coincidentally the same year that Metal Gear Solid 3 took place in-game.

The Sony Walkman was also from the seventies.

Also, Uniqlo was founded in 1949.

I'm not sure about Pepsi NEX (I'll need a direct link to it before I can determine whether it took place or not, seeing how Wikipedia apparently doesn't have it.).

However, I can deduce that the only one of the products mentioned on the IGN article that DEFINITELY doesn't belong in the 1970s is the AXE Body Spray (it was made in France during 1983.). Of course, that's expected, as, not to imply anything about Kojima's intentions for the product placement or anything (since I know it's not similar at all), but as I stated before in a previous post, Hollywood has done similar things to this before. Take the Booty Sweat mention in Tropic Thunder, for example.

Anyways, that's all I have to offer onto the table.

monsters don't actually exist either. Some parts of this game aren't meant to be taken seriously.

As long as the monster hunter mission, and the mountain dew outfit aren't mandatory, then its fine.

This is only a big deal if the game sucks, because people will point out "how it's part of a larger trend"..blah blah blah. If the game turns out to be as awesome as it looks in the trailers, then no one will give two shits about finding a can of Axe in the jungle. This and the people complaining about the bonus modes like the Monster Hunter thing makes no fucking sense to me.

Confirmed in the latest KPR that a lot of the product placements are only in the Japanese versions. The Monster Hunter and AC tie ins are confirmed for Western Versions.

i dont see a problem with all this i find it amusing, they always had collaborations and product placements in some form since MGS2 though not to the extent of MGS4 and peace walker. it could be that with it being on PSP it wont get much exposure so every little helps.
my mate in japan is getting me some Mountain Dews when he comes back in the summer. and i find the walkman thing hillarious!

I wasn't sure about the product placements at first but reading this has told me how I really feel. I'm actually disappointed.
I just hate the idea that I'm missing out on something.
