Your review seems pretty solid I gotta say, but some aspects, I can't help but feel are relative between people who play. So I'd probably have to play for myself before I see if I can fully agree with the verdict or not. But so far, it sounds promising I'd say.
Oh that's very true. If I've learned anything by reviewing games, it's that people with both agree and disagree with you no matter what you say. I personally just call it like I see it. What's important as a consumer is to find a reviewer who you find you always agree with. Then you can trust the reviewer's judgment on what to buy.

@Jack Reacher: That was what happens when you let Kojima mess around and make a billion non-cannon extra missions ^_^

@Granin: Oh and I personally find Monster Hunter to be a terrible game. While I do love co-op and see the appeal, I also need a story. Even a story like borderlands is enough. In addition, I just can't get used to the monster hunter camera/movement controls (The popular Japanese way to hold the PSP for Monster Hunter is thumb on the analog stick and index finger on the d-pad). And my other gripe is that the battles are too slow and long for my tastes. I just like something a bit faster.

That said, shooting a dragon in the face with a stinger missile? Perfection.

I can understand why some people do not like Monster Hunter, but while I like a story, the game itself is just genius. It's like Pokemon; incredibly addictive. It has the same feel to it, obessively collecting parts and "grinding". In a way it is very MMO esque. I have two friends I play it with often and have never needed to get Xlink Kai or use Ad Hoc Party much, and the old school community aspect is very appealing. I also dont really care for a story if it isn't a good story really. I'd rather play a board game than watch Green Zone again.

By the way, I downloaded and listened to your Outcast Podcast, episode 6. It's good, but there was an error in the PW part. I can't go into too much detail due to spoilers, but basically - you haven't completed the story aspect of the game yet. If you want me to go into more detail PM me. :P

EDIT: Ah never mind, I listened on, but the mistake remains:

Haha. Well as it turns out I finished up the epilogue missions on Tuesday (I was on epilogue mission 4 when we recorded). So yeah, I see now that we did make a mistake then. I didn't expect anything like that to be in the epilogue. Looked good though. Still, I maintain that once the credits roll I've beaten the game and am allowed to review it. Though sadly, sometimes I do make mistakes out of ignorance.

Because there are absolutely no spoilers in the video. It's almost like a "Night Video."

A "night video" eh? Never heard that term before. What does that mean exactly? :patriot:

I think he means the videos Kojima released of PW gameplay. Here they are:

Oh and hey, would you say this game is The Missing Link like early trailers promised? Some people on the net say the game is good but that the story sucked balls. Is this true? Please try not to spoil anything.

Is this the missing link... Naw. I'd say that Portable Ops was more of a missing link than Peace Walker. Portable Ops dealt with the fallout of MGS3. Peace Walker is much more about Big Boss still being a broken man 10 years after the death of the boss.

As for the story. It's good but straightforward. There were few big twists in the plot and even after them I felt my overall goal was the same; so really did they actually matter?

Now how do I say this non-spoilery... hmmm. I think this is pretty non-spoilery, but just in case I'll tag it and leave the choice to you. Whether this story comes out feeling deep or hokey is fully dependent on how you personally feel about

Peace Walker is far more the missing link than MPO. It actually bridges a gap of story, it isn't a tag of crap on a classic title like MPO was. A lot of the plot elements make sense to future titles. MPO explained one thing (badly) and that was how Big Boss amassed the funds for OH. PW explains far more.

@Granin: Hey, they also explained Gray Fox's past! Oh wait, that was explained in Metal Gear 2...
"o, hoo gives a fuk aboot gay 8bit GAYmes lol!"

Anyway...

First of all, great review. Second of all, will I be able to enjoy the story and pretend MPO never happened? (inb4weedle_mchairyfag)

Hmm well what about what this guy said:

MG1/MG2 vs MPO/MPW

According to him MPO and Peace Walker ruin the story for MG1 and MG2. What do you think about this? (LOL again try not to spoil :D ).

The man in a pickle suit.
I don't see how any of that "ruins" Metal Gear 1 and 2.
Granin only made designs for a prototype. The pictures of REX are just easter eggs. He also has a model of an orbital frame from ZOE. I don't think there are many flying space suits driven by angsty melodramatic kids pissed about the destruction of their colony in the MG universe...

Also, from what I heard, the bosses in PW are NOT Metal Gears. Besides that, there were only, what, FOUR Metal Gears between RAXA and TX-55? Hardly a "full swing."

Only MPO ruins the original games with "Null"...

Well we can't really know THAT much about the game cuz
1.

2. The briefing files are in Jap with no English subs. Apparently they hold a lot of information about the story and background of the characters. So only because you read the speech bubbles in the cutscenes doesn't really mean you experienced the whole story :hmm: .

It's like playing MGS1 watching the cutscenes but ignoring all the Codec conversations. You don't know the whole thing :X: ... yet.

Can't know anything, eh? Wow, there's no way I can respond to that without sounding like a pretentious ass. :patriot:

So I'll just be blunt with you. I review Japanese games because I live in Japan and speak Japanese.

Now unless you've watched my videos or listened to my podcasts, I understand that you'd have no way of knowing that, but surely you didn't think that not one single person on this board was cable of understanding Japanese. But long story short, while you may not know the whole story, some of us do. ^_^

@RD: Have you listened to every Briefing File then?

MPO only really ruined Grey Fox, the rest just didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things, maybe the final cutscene a little and Army's Heaven's fund.

Peace Walker doesn't really answer questions in the sense MGS4 does, it just explains what happens in that time period. I never really asked myself how Outer Heaven came to be really, even after loving MGS3 and finding Big Boss to be my favourite character.

I think when the flood gates open and real discussion starts happening Peace Walker's story will be one of the most contraversial. I myself find it to be good, but I can see why some people may not like it, but to really apply that logic it would mean they hate the rest of the series. Heh, hard to talk about it without spoilers.

I've seen one person call out that Peace Walker is full of retcons but I called the guy out on all of them, he didn't reply either.

Well it is a prequel so retcons may be part of it. I think to think they would be the positive kind though. I have lots and lots of hope for this game and the story though :thumb: I suppose if you really wanted to know, you could just shoot RD a PM and ask him about it.

Well I don't think Peace Walker can retcon THAT MUCH. Couldn't really know cuz I haven't played the game, though. Gotta wait for June 8th to find out.
