Hi, I just stumbled across the metal gear soup website and amongst the very swary articles i found someone asking about the cannon and retcons between portable ops and peace walker. I've never played either but know the story to portable ops. Now i've just started to go through story again and currently half way through MGS3 but what should i do after? I don't own a psp so i'll be watching the cutscenes on youtube, should i view PO and then PW or does PW retcon PO and ruin it? should i skip PO and just goto PW? i'm not sure. The retcons in question are to do with Ocelot the DCI and the funing of armys heaven plus a few others. |

PW is canon. PO isn't anywhere near as good in terms of gameplay and story but it's still worth playing if you have the money. |

The Boss to Surpass Big Boss

Just skip PO, it doesn't matter much. The scenes from that game aren't even that interesting. It's a fun game, at times. But PW is far better. The story is awesome too....definitely look into it. |

Not exactly. Without Portable Ops, some stuff in Metal Gear Solid 4 would not have made sense, like the reference to The Boss being set up to die by the CIA and especially the part about Major Zero getting the legacy. In a manner of speaking, those facts alone make PO a pretty important addition to the series. |

Could someone move this thread to the spoilers sub-forum? And yeah, I've read both of the articles. That one and it's "sequel". |

I disagree. I know nothing about PO's story and MGS4 made sense in these instances. The only difference is that I didn't know those facts until MGS4. Just because I didn't know it before MGS4 doesn't mean it was confusing when mentioned. So I don't consider PO to be canon. And I'm not even sure if I want to accept PW as canon either. A lot of what happens is pointless and stupid. |

^^just cos you don't like it, doesn't make it not canon, PO may not have been up to scratch with the rest of the series, but it still gave a nice story, and peace walker was something kojima heavily involved himself in to make up for peace walker's failings, there is no doubt that they are both absolutely canon. |

Considering the fact that Metal Gear Solid 3 heavily implied that the Patriots were actually founded by the DCI at the time and not by Major Zero (hello! ending timeline? Post Credits Phone Call), I wouldn't be surprised if several people DID end up confused over the whole issue about Zero being the one who founded the Patriots and how he got the legacy. I know I would have if I played Metal Gear Solid 3 and played Metal Gear Solid 4 without ever experiencing MPO. |

Yeah but nearly everyone does that for PO anyway. TBH I think its fine to do that if it's not a numbered game of the main series. I mean the events of PW have no real bearing on the previously established stories at all except for the one part at the end when he finally adopts Big Boss as his title. |

Just to make things short. Peace Walker is canon, while Portable Ops canon is still debatable, similar to MGS Mobile, though it's most likely a canon. |

We have arrived.

What Wayno said. Whether you like it or want to acknowledge it or not, Portable Ops is canon, and Peace Walker is canon. I partially agree with Sword that a lot of what happens in Peace Walker is rather pointless or doesn't really give us anything important that we didn't know before, but it's still canon whether it's pointless or not. |
