![]() I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of God. I've seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What God desires is here [the head] and here [the heart] and what you decide to do every day will make you a good man...or not | |

Hey Reapus, good call on the thread mate and I apologise for some of the fucking stupidity that has cluttered up what should be an interesting topic. Christ, I've never seen so much trollage in a legitimate topic. Anyway, as someone who lives a fairly active life I suppose I can offer some insight to the successes and failures of my own fitness initiatives. First off, I empathise with all those who tried gym membership and failed. I managed to keep it up for around three months but after that it went downhill. Illness didn't help I suppose but the main reason was a lack of enthusiasm; a result of impractical working hours than having no ambition whatsoever. Working fulltime and keeping fit is a big deal (for me) so kudos to all those who find a way. My situation has changed now so I'm finding the time to squeeze in a few sessions in the week which really makes a difference. I do think overall the most sustainable way to get and stay fit is to live a more active life: football, basketball, God even table tennis — whatever — are all avenues worth exploring. I've also found if you're stuck for time, gym will more often than not end up an expensive inconvenience. Unless you've no other means of weight training, I'd think twice about signing up to the local gym (to begin with at least). One thing I think is worth discussing is weights. Now a lot of people I've spoken to over the years have all expressed passion to be built like the proverbial outhouse, however I often wonder what people are doing to their physiques. There's a lot of emphasis on bench and bi's yet they neglect the rest of the body, particularly the legs. They call that the punk look apparently and it looks completely disproportionate in my opinion. But then of course, if that's the look you're after then go for it however if an athletic body is what one craves then you can't afford to cut corners. That's one of the biggest problems with weight machines: they're designed to train certain muscle/muscle group(s) separately, so you'd have to spend a lot of time circulating from one apparatus to the other in order to get a full workout. I've found Olympic Weightlifting a good alternative. I know a few weightlifters and not only do they look fit, they're fucking strong too. I think it is a more efficient workout so I can give it my endorsement. Plus it trains a lot of muscle groups together and to the right degree, with reduced injury risk (from my experience). For cardio, I run. I've found treadmills worryingly easy to use for long periods so instead I just go out for a jog. I'm thinking about taking up cycling too. Doing 10K runs and the London Marathon (in April) is good motivation to stay fit so having goals such as these can help keep your enthusiasm healthy too. However to really supercharge the metabolism, they say sprinting is second to none. The proof is easy to find: just look at the way athletes' physiques change with increasing distances. Easier still, try Maurice Green vs Haile Gebrselassie. And finally for nutrition, I'm a fan of protein shakes simply because I don't eat meat. Otherwise I think eating sensibly is adequate to support efforts in the gym. People trying to get 'big' won't find any quick fixes but the one supplement that I've known and heard to have measurable impact is creatine. |

Agreed. I had the same problem with gym by the way. Work. It's so boring if you have to go alone too. My main problem was food. When, what, how much, ... I've tried protein shakes, but I got tired of the tastes (few that I liked to begin with) really fast. My trainer made me mix it with oatmeal for breakfast, but after a couple weeks just thinking about it, or the smell of it, made me throw up. I'm back to eating a lot of vegetables and Weetabix now. |

jc55, thank you for seeing the good in this thread. I must say, working out doesn't seem to be for everyone but I think you've got the potential. I don't waste money on gym memberships, instead I buy a few dummbells and such and work out in my house. You need to find a motivation if you're going to get in shape and having an active occupation helps. I will say this though, Creatine isn't a very good protein supplement. I would suggest checking out GNC Pro Performance 100% Whey Protein. It costs about $40-60 for a huge bucket that will last an estimated three months. I would suggest getting the vanilla flavor and mixing it with milk. God, it tastes so good. I sometimes want to drink it even when I'm inactive, I don't though because that would just make me fat. It tastes great, it's fast acting and it's for sure one of the best things you can buy. Good luck with your marathon if you ever do decide to do it, I wish you the best. |

I know exactly what you mean about the protein shakes. There is one easy way around it however: get unflavoured. Then just mix it with whatever the hell you want. Nesquik powder is popular as it comes in many flavours. Heck, that milk flavouring stuff like Crusha probably has a few you could run with. Doesn't have to be milk based either being unflavoured, which I think is better as dairy based shakes are probably less tolerable over time? For the most part I just try to neck the bloody lot. I feel like a whuss otherwise. EDIT: HAha Reapus, you'd do well in the UK as an ambassador for M&S food. As for the marathon yeah my place is confirmed! I'm dreading it though as I think it will come close to killing me. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I have no doubt it'll be at least twice as hard as Kilimanjaro (in a few weeks). jc55, don't let your obstacle intimidate you. Fuck it up and don't let yourself be defeated mentally before you even start. You can do it, just don't worry about kissing your boo boo's. Be tough on yourself. Once you start, you finish. No half-assing it, make it to the finish line. |

i've always fancied running a marathon, but i have hardly done any training, i'm physically fit and not overweight, and i can run pretty fast, but i'm not sure if i could pull of a full marathon, does long distance running take alot of training to get into, or can you pick it up on a whim, providing you are fit and healthy? |

No Professor. Being fit and marathon fit are two different things. You need to condition your body in order to cope with the long distance. It's a stamina and endurance game. If you're fit, the transition you'd undergo during training would be quicker so yeah, it probably helps, but you've still got to put the miles in. They recommend half marathons and what not in the build up to race day. Man you're making me nervous just talking about it! |

jc55 is right. You can't just jump into a Marathon. It can take up to months of training. Running isn't easy, it's a tough mind game and you have to have the mentality that you'll never quit. |

Don't follow the weight loss guide, since you're skinny. It would be pointless but if you do want to bulk up then I advise you try out my workout routine which I have probably posted somewhere in this thread. It should be a link to a body building website where my profile workout routine is. It will be too hard for you so if you'd like send me a PM and I'll have it modified for you. |

Alrighty will do thanks. I'm also very weak since I can't lift something that's 20 pounds or more. Hoping though to get tough and get some muscle especially on my arms.
