Don't you guys get sick more often from lack of meat and other nutrients/bacteria (there is "healthy" bacteria)? I have more vegan and vegetarian friends then I probably should (lol) considering my carnivorous preference. I'm omnivorous but there's nothing like a nice red piece of meat *drool* On a side note, I've been trying to put on some weight but my metabolism is wickedly retarded. If I don't eat or eat enough for a single day I can lose 5+ pounds (I weigh 120-lbs and stand at 5'10"). Any of you similar? I'm not trying to become a body builder or anything just maybe put on some muscle tone. Edited by SteelFox, Oct 12 2011, 06:15:34 PM.

We have arrived.

Well I used to eat a lot (and I really mean a lot, as in probably at least twice a day) of chicken daily but lately actually for example haven't had any in the past week if I am remembering correctly and I haven't had any problems adjusting to vegetarian food. (That was pretty much the only meat I'd have by the way, never really ate red meats and I'd have turkey every now and again but it would be more of a one off each week maybe.) |

I deal with the opposite - If I eat a bit more than usual I grow fat as hell... How old are you, man? I think (no offense) if you're not a child you must take care of this retarded metabolism you say. My advice is 'go see the doctor'... Other point: Your BMI is about a 22,7 which is okay, you shouldn't gain extra weight unless your really mean it. Edited by marcelodl, Oct 13 2011, 02:21:22 PM.

I eat all the time, pretty much typical american diet to. LOTS of burgers and other fast food (3-4x a day), a home cooked meal (always some kind of meat) for supper every day and other little things in between ($1-2 dollars snacks). I also do alot of walking, as I have to to get said food but the distance is minor (10 minutes one way); I know general activity with martial arts is supposed to be healthy but I don't think I'm really THAT active. Hehe, I try... used to eat alot worse. I used to work graveyard shift at Whataburger (a texas burger place) where I'd eat a "burger" consisting of; -6/7 slices of cheese or shredded -buttered & toasted bun -3 beef patties -2 fried chicken patties -2 onion ring -4 hashrowns -diced & grilled onions -diced & grilled jalapenos -all lathered in sausage gravy -sprinkled with some salt & pepper I worked there for about 8 months and ate that every night atleast 2-3x a day, my coworkers joked that I was going to have a heart attack on my lunch break. I'm honestly surprised my body has such a tolerance for the junk I eat/ate. If I didn't work there it would of cost me around $11-14.00 but since I had the discount I only had to pay $5-6.00, or nothing in most cases since my boss was so awesome. I've been a Vegetarian for only a year so far. And while I think you can loose weight without becoming one, I chose to in that regard because I needed a way to force myself into a Healthier Diet. Such a Strict Diet, helped me utilize Portion Control. That, and going to the gym every day for a year, working out for one hour(Not at first, didn't want to scare my muscles away) And of course, Proper Motivation and Patience. It helped me loose 115 pounds. Because of the results, I'm sticking with being a vegetarian. May even become a Vegan in the future. I bumped this Topic to add something. So without just giving my experiences. And Considering this may or may not be the Official Vegetarian Thread, I have a few questions for my fellow meatless eaters. Have you ever been asked if an Egg is meat? I know it's not, but I have a friend you believes Eggs are meat, etc. You know where that conversation led. In general, I avoid conversations with people IRL about the Subject of Vegans and such. Because it always leads to the "Don't you miss Meat" category. or "Why did you become a Vegetarian". "Is this an Animal Rights Thing". It just makes me uncomfortable in general when discussing. Which I don't think should be the case. What About people who claim there Vegetarians, and still eat Fish and Chicken. (It's easy to just say they don't eat red meat, but why claim there something the factually aren't) Which all leads back to the egg. My friends whole argument was that some vegetarians don't consider chicken a meat, so I can consider eggs a meat. It mattered not if I explained that eggs are merely protein, or unfertilized embryos. Any Other Vegetarians or Vegans on the forum? Have any Health Experiences or Tales to talk about? |

Fellow meatless eater (vegan 2 years) here.I've actually never been asked that, even when I was vegetarian and still ate them. It's kind of like it's own thing. The only way it could be considered meat is if there was actually a chicken embryo or fetus in there. And I don't think it would be so popular if it did. Yeah, and I usually don't tell people either unless they ask or the time just arises. People can get a little defensive and I understand that because I've been at that side of the spectrum before too.A vegetarian who only eats fish is called a pescetarian. I did that for a while before transitioning to lacto ovo vegetarianism (no meat, but I still ate dairy and eggs), and then veganism after that. I think I've heard the term "semi vegetarianism" get thrown around to refer to people who only abstain from just red meat or everything except besides chicken and seafood. Personally I think it's kind of a cop-out and a label for the sake of having a label since chicken constitutes such a large part of the typical Western meat-heavy diet. If someone abstained from red meat and stuff like that, it would make more sense just to call them a particularly health conscious eater. But yeah, if it's flesh from a living thing, then it's meat. |

Never crossed my mind to be honest. It doesn't exactly make sense from evolutionary point of view to me. I could never deprive myself of meat or other animal related products. Meat makes me feel full longer, it's natural, it's low on calories and builds my muscle. Do want. I work out 6 times a week. I eat clean, but I love my milk, cottage cheese, eggs (eggs <33) and variety of meat. Sometimes I make my own almond milk, but not too often since almonds are expensive and I prefer them raw as a snack. I am about to become a certified fitness instructior and certified nutritionist in the following months and if there's one piece of advice that applies to healthy eating is: Stay away from processed crap. Find out what works for you, we all have unique bodies. Everything in moderation. @Tollhouse: I wish I could eat tofu since I love the texture and the taste, but I have serious thyroid issues. While the issue of soy and thyroid remains unresolved and unproven, I don't want to risk it when there are so many lower risk alternatives available. @Wayno: Don't underastidmate the need to really bust your ass off in the gym. If you don't tear down your muscles, there's no need for them to regrow stronger. I've had many guys complain to me that their diet is solid and they work out regularly without any results, but after I've seen their "workout" I honestly wanted to cry. @SteelFox: Martial arts =! conditioning. Start doing weight training. Change your cardio to HIIT. Edited by LiSD, Jun 1 2013, 12:07:19 PM.

@Whoever said that they lose 5 lbs a day: loosing more than 2 lbs a week is crazy unhealthy, and honestly probably take YEARS off of your life. You're more than likely just not accounting for the food you're pooping out. Losing or gaining weight is very simple. You find your metabolic rate, for your activity level, then eat more or less than it depending on what you want to do. Losing FAT, is a little different. All food should be broken down into five groups, Carbohydrates (Sugars, starches, fibres), Amino Acids (BCAA, AA, Protein) Lipids (Oils, fats, Hormones, Fish Oil), Minerals (Zinc, Iron, Magnesium) and Vitamins (B6, B12, C, etc.). Making Macro Nutrients (Carbs, Brotein, Fats) and Micronutrients (Vitamins/Minerals), Micronutrients can be handled via multivitimins. BASELINE FOR SUPPLEMENTATION IS NOT WHEY, IT'S MULTIVITAMINS. In the human body, Carbohydrates cannot be stored for long term durations, so they are stored in the form of Triglycerides, fat. Carbohydrates --> Fat --> Protein (in your muscles) ^ that is how your body burns matter for fuel ^ If you are looking to lose fat do something that will burn calories (I.E. Running or weight training) before eating any high carbs. So what I'll do is wake up, shower, go for a run, get home THEN eat, that way the energy I am burning is Fat. Edit: Kind of suprised that I've never seen this Diamond Edge guy before, but I would preach what he is saying. @wayno like shine-bright-like-a-diamond is saying you DO need to do strength training, and 100% need to go to failure on at kleast 50% of your sets, to break down ALL the muscle fibres you're targetting. Hey. You turned left.

One very important thing though. People (especially women) really like to go overboard with cardio when trying to loose weight. We've all been to the gym and seen same people on those eliptical machines that look the same they did 2 years ago, yeah? The mentality goes as follows: If I do more cardio, I'll burn more fat!" Makes sense, right? Wrong. Body has this amazing ability to adapt. Anyone can jog or "excercise" at 70% of their maximum heart rate. Even my mother who is a chain smoker. This does about jack shit for your body and in no means makes you fit. People say cardio is boring. I say you're doing it wrong. If your greatest concern while doing cardio is being bored instead of trying not to cough up your lungs at the end of each interval, then you're wasting your time. If you want to burn fat and keep the muscle, keep your cardio sessions brief and intense. It's all about volume, not intensity. But! Since you won't create a major calorie deficit in 20-30 minute cardio session (your metabolic rate will go nuts though) the nutrition is of utmost importance! Your meals should be low GI (always, even after workout, if you're not a trained professional there's no need to stuff yourself with carbs shortly after, just as there's no need to run home immediately after gym for your proteins) and caloric intake spread evenly throughout the day. Cut the carbs the closer you get to bedtime. Carbs=energy. You don't need energy to go lie in your bed. Have some protein and vegetables so your body will repair and detox overnight instead. Get plenty of sleep, that's important too. You get stronger when you sleep, not in the gym. Okay, I've gone off my point... If you go overboard with cardio, your body will break down muscle tissue for fuel instead of fat. It's called catabolism, Google it. Body believes itself to be starving, so it eliminates this problem by breaking down the biggest energy consumer in your body - your muscles, and holds on to fat for dear life (that's why people who want to loose weight too fast and can't handle it usually gain few pounds more than what they weighed before the diet, because the body wants to make sure it's prepared when you have another bright idea like this). It happens with excess cardio and low calorie intake. When doing either of the two (or both) you get skinny fat instead of shredded. ![]() Think about this next time you do your cardio and become another hamster on a wheel! Also guys, ladies dig abs far more than they do your biceps.
