So I think I may have bought a WASR AK-47. Whatever's wrong with those.

Edit: They sound unreliable from what I've heard so far.

Edit Edit: Here's a pic of it the minute I got home with it.

Yes, it came with a bayonet.

The WASR is Romanian, right? If it's the WASR-10, then it should be decent. Perhaps not as sturdy as an original Russian-made AK, but still. I still prefer the Bulgarian AK-47.

Yep, it's Romanian. Seems like it came with everything but a cleaning rod. Anyone know how to get cosmoline out of a bayonet sheath?

Edit: Googled and I think I have the answer about that. That bayonet's a real pain to deal with though. Apparently they have fitting problems occasionally. Looks like I have to whittle down some metal on the front end of the if I want to get it to fit. :hmm:

So I really must know, Arisaka Type 38 or Gewehr 98 (Not Kar98K).

@Thunderbolt:
Yeah filing down metal for a bayonet can be a real pain.

Just generally which one's better. Money is no issue. I'm looking for stopping power and accuracy.

I swear I've heard of that Japanese one before. Just looking at the cartridge size, I'll put my money on that Arisaka one.

So the gun show's comin' to my city next weekend! :)
I think I'm gonna get maybe an ammo can, a sling, maybe a new grip too if I have the money. Anyone buy from one before? You can get good deals at them, right?

did you actually look at the round they use? the Gewehr uses a 7.92x57mm (commonly refereed to as 8mm Mauser) while the Type 38 Arisaka uses a 6.5x50mm (commonly refered to as 6.5 jap the Gewehr blows it out of the water in bullet diameter and case length.

in my book, you're better off getting a Kar 98 they were built to higher standards and had higher tolerances than the older Gewehrs, if you're worried about the stigma of using an infamous weapon tied to the Nazi's just remember two things. the Kar 98 was the weapon of not only the Nazi's but also several European countries, it was, (arguably) the finest bolt action rifle of it's time it's only competitors being the Lee-Enfield and the Mosin-Nagant. every other rifle, including the American Springfield 1903, used the Mauser action that the Kar 98 did.

Two: there is no such thing as an evil gun, there are only people that use them to do evil things. yes, the battlefield pick up you buy might have, at one point in time killed people. but in your hands the gun will serve you, it's not going to turn you evil or something just because you have it.

also it's nearly impossible to find quality Arisakas since a lot of them were melted down after japan surrendered. good luck fining cheap 6.5 Jap too.

Yeah, I'd figure a smaller caliber on a long rifle would have better accuracy. Stopping power? Maybe not, but if one takes precedence over the other I'd say that would be accuracy when it comes to long rifles.

not really, the smaller round will have a flatter trajectory, and it will go a little further, but when it hit's it's target 600 -800 yards away it's not going to have the same stopping power that the 8mm will. that's why the Japanese moved up to the 7.7x58mm which is way more comparable to the 8mm Mauser, in fact they modeled it off of the Mauser.

@Tyrant, ah, okay, well then i'd recommend you go ahead and grab a Type 99 instead of a 38, the 7.7 jap is still hard to find, and so are the rifles but they are easier to find and the ammo is slightly cheaper (i think)

you really aren't missing out on anything with the Gewehr it's just an older version of your Kar98.

Edit: better yet, i suggest you pick up a Lee-Enfield, best bolt rifle of the era in my opinion.

I already have the Lee-Enfield as well :D got it last year, and yes, it's certainly one of the best. I'm not trying to bash the Mosin-Nagant of the Springfield '03 but damn that thing is great. Oh yeah, I also forgot about the Type 99. I'm trying to collect as many WWI-II bolt-action rifles.

eh, the 1903 is basically a Mauser clone, as are anything that isn't a Lee Enfield or a Mosin variant.

there's also the french MAS-36... but that rifle sucks.

a good WW2 era rifle is the Swiss K31, but it never fought in WW2

Well I already have:
K98
Lee Enfield
Mosin Nagant
'03

But I know about the K31 you speak of, and I've shot one, and I must say, excellent rifle.

Lucky! i've seen several at some local gunshops, but whenever i got the money they were gone =/ the next old bolt gun i get will probably be a Lee Enfield. i want the Mk. III if i can find it, the IV was a little too short for my liking.

or maybe it's the other way around, i'll look.

Edit: ah, the Mk. III is a lighter gun and the barrel doesn't protrude rom the handguard, thaaaaat's why i liked it, i also recal it being much more ergonomic than the Mk. IV

Ah, you'd be so lucky. I got too late to the store to get an Mk.III or II if they had one, but instead I ended up with the Mk.I, although I still think it's a great rifle.

Fuck, just converted one of my 1911's to take the .460 Rowland.

As if it couldn't sling enough firepower already...

Here's an image for comparison between rounds:

Not too much bigger, but when you get used to the 1911 have the recoil that .45 ACP provides it can be quite the change.

Anyone know how to get cosmoline out of a bayonet sheath?
just saw this.

do you live in a warm place? if so the most cost effective way to get the cosmoline off your bayonet/rifle/anything is to suspend it in a sealed black trashbag in some sort of container. for my mosin nagant i literally put the gun in my trashcan wrapped up in a blask trash bag and left it in the sun all day, nearly all the cosmoline had run out of it by the end of the day.

also you can just boil it, but be prepared to toss the pot you use afterward.
