first of all, im no racist. anyone with a right mind knows stereotyping is nonsense. anyway, i was wondering what the stereotypical view of europeans is by the rest of the world? for example, europeans would stereotypically view americans as overweight, unintelligent, simple minded people, with no knowledgeof the outside world, but still trying to act as the police of the world. eventhough none of them has ever heard of an atlas. now everyone knows this is not a realistic view, but i would like to know what the stereotypical views about us europeans are. |

Depends on what type of European. For example, British are commonly stereotyped as stuck up tea drinkers. |

Correct! We say this while completely ignoring our own obesity and stupidity (there's no difference between how stupid the US or Europe is. If you asked random European where Vietnam is, nobody would really know.) People are fat and stupid everywhere on regular basis, it's not a US thing at all. I admit, I'm not too fond of the Americans as nation, not because of anything of the above, but because of their arrogance. Still, I don't actively judge them and don't have any of these thoughts in mind when people talk to me and tell me they're from the US. It's just, you know, one of those things I feel and I'm not terribly proud about, but it's always nagging me in the back of my mind every time I hear something bad happening that is connected to the US. EDIT: In "retaliation", how Americans really see Europe? How is this? It's ... not too far off at all, haha. Edited by saiz, Jan 9 2013, 10:21:39 AM.

Never been to Europe. Would like to go some day though. I don't think the rest of the world holds Europe in a much different regard than the US. Like the US, I think a lot of the Western European countries project the image of 'imperialistic country full of conceited fucks,' but the difference is that the US takes the cake as the epitome of that image. |

Well here's the one stereotype I have heard a lot. Many Americans criticize Europeans because they work, on average, far fewer hours than average Americans and take more vacation time. This is at least the case with countries like France. |

Finland: "Everyone is cold towards others, nobody talks unless they are drunk and everyone is carrying knives and axes." That is most common stereotypical view I have heard. |

I've never met a single person who carried a knife or an axe with them either as a weapon or to defend themselves. That line might be stereotypical but it's not true at all. |

I can't really agree with this, everyone here knows where Vietnam is. While the US proportionately has the most obese people in the world by a pretty big margin (~30%), yes the UK(~25%) and some Mediterranean states are very fat (I believe Greece is about 20%). But countries like France, Italy, and Switzerland all fall below 10% which in the 21st century is excellent. I'd wager that all of the Scandinavian states and maybe even Germany are below 10% too but I can't be bothered to find out. Honestly I don't think you can talk about Europeans in general just yet, even though there are no border controls and they are introducing schemes to make people more European than say, Dutch, there is still too much of a divide. Someone from Madrid is completely alien to some living in Minsk on a scale that is much greater than the difference between someone from Miami and someone from Seattle. At the end of the day, we're still not a country, and we're certainly not a nation with a unified culture. But to answer the topic, I've been around the world and I've never really had people from other countries say anything stupid to me. If anything I think the worst stereotype of all is the one which portrays everyone else as ignorant, how many Brits here have really been asked by an American if they know the Queen? Because I sure haven't. They still probably think Europeans are all homosexuals and Nazis though. |

This isn't really a serious discussion Antii. It's more having a laugh with suggested steroetypes. |

I wasn't going for serious discussion. Simply discussion. Well I think scotts speak in a way that no one understands and always wear a kilt. Irish are always drunk. I think english are very polite and drink 5 'o clock tea every day. They all love their Queen. Swedish are blonde versions of us with a lots of freckles. All french people wear berets and eat croissants for breakfast. They hate to speak english. All norwegians are great skiiers. Edited by Antii, Jan 9 2013, 04:57:14 PM.

Hmm let me see Europe in general: loves soccer UK: all they eat is fish n chips, drink tea, dentists don't exist and God Save the Queen. Scotland: Everyone wears skirts, eats haggis, and play bagpipes. France: Smelly, snotty, eat snails Spain: Wait, it isn't by Mexico? Portugal: Why hasn't Spain conquered this yet? It's just there. It's like a hangnail. Ireland: Potatoes and alcohol Germany: Sourkraut, Nazis, a language that sounds like you have a frog in your throat Italy: Mario, Spaghetti, Pizza, Romans Greece: Gyros, Hercules, debt, and SPARTA! Hungary: Funny name. Especially when used with the country Turkey Austria: Kangaroos, that opera house, and....wait that's a different country? Scandinavia: Socialists Russia: Freezing, Communists, language that sounds like you have an angry frog in your throat. Belgium: Waffles and chocolate Switzerland: Neutrality and banks Poland: Butt end of jokes. Also Soviets = Motherland and Nazi Germany = Fatherland than Poland is the child. Romania: Vampires Latvia and those other small countries beside Russia: Too small to care Netherlands: Flowers and wooden shoes. Something like that I think. |

American's don't really hold "Europeans" to one general steryotype. more just country by country. but i'll have a go anyway the UK: Guy Richie films, awful fucking bland food, stabbings, protectionist, royalty Britain: tea and crumpits, bad teeth, punk rock Scotland: Whiskey, the loch ness monster, kilts, bag pipes Wales: inbreds, sheep fuckers, France: fine food, surrendering armies, everyone is short, everyone is overly sexual, the US always gets dragged into their shit to fix their problems (WW1, WW2, Vietnam etc.) Germany: the old evil, atheists, progressive but bad art, bestiality. Switzerland: guns, neutral, banks, gold Swiss army knives Austria: chocolate land. Poland: stupid idiots. Ukraine: everything is radioactive and babies are born with three heads Holland, Windmills, Dykes, weed, hookers Norway/Sweden: vikings. that's all i can think of at the moment |
