I wouldn't say Britain had "greener pastures" in India and Africa. North America is one of the largest land masses in the world, which at the time had almost limitless untapped resources, quite a few of which couldn't be obtained easily elsewhere. If it was a simple matter of Britain having better things to do somewhere else, they wouldn't have let the war go on for almost a decade. @Dirty Duck: It's dumb for Americans today to brag about the revolution, as it occurred over 230 years ago and nobody living today had anything to do with it, obviously. It's pretty foolish to brag about something you personally weren't involved in, simply because it happened in the country in which you were born. I know people do brag though. I'd say it was impressive because it was more than just a civil war - there would at least be some match in strength between two sides in a proper civil war, but this was a maximum of 50,000 men, which comprised mostly small militias, fighting against the biggest military power in the world. That's a simple fact that really can't be denied. Edited by Fear, Jan 23 2013, 06:28:23 AM.

Yeah, maybe it's because of that too here, since they're our colonizers as well. The Spanish are called ''Gallegos'' when you make those kind of jokes, and the stereotype is that they're really stupid. |

This thread is great. According to everyone I am living in my windmill with my garden full of tulips behind a dyke where my finger is stuck in whilst wearing wooden shoes making jokes with a funny accent to a whore sucking my dick with a doobie in my mouth. That is pretty much it isn't it? |

Oh how did I forget about the Spanish. Supposedly a large group of Spaniards can never get along and all have like a million differing opinions between them. Haven't experienced that myself personally but perhaps I didn't spend enough time there. First encounters with Spaniards many years ago wasn't great, came off as very arrogant but sure one person / group doesn't represent a nation. @FHD: I'd probably agree with you about India but considering Britain had such a large focus on conquering Egypt and gaining a gateway to Palestine it may have been relevant. The Spanish many years before poked into North America but decided to leave it as they didn't see much of use to them in the land, but of course at that stage they were looking for spices and gold which was supposedly aplenty in South America. |

Some stereotypes I don't really get... the teeth one mainly. Granted, where I live, there are many, maaaaaany disgusting cretins who live here who literally only have a couple of teeth each. That aside, pretty much everyone else I ever see has fairly normal teeth. Maybe it's not as artificially perfect over here as it is in America, but whatever... I've never worn braces or anything and my teeth look fine. I don't drink tea either. Fuck stereotypes! |

Ha. There's a very large portion of the US (colloquially known as "the South", or simply, "Dixie") in which the number of teeth per capita is painfully low. So don't worry! |

I'm pretty sure the stereotypes just arise from when the pilgrims left Europe to get to the New World. I think it's pretty obvious that the US wanted to be different from England (and Europe as a whole) in every way. US drives on the right, different words, etc. but stereotypes are found everywhere on different cultures at different cultures. |
