How much would it cost to take just 1 class at a college for summer school?

I applied for financial aid and will want to become a full-time student for the Fall semester at a local community college...

but I've been out of school since I graduated high school in 2008, and I've got other things going on at home + I'm looking for a job so I think it'd be a better idea to ease myself back into school. Specifically by taking just 1 class in something I'm not very good at, math.

Anyway, when I say I'm not good at Math I mean I'm borderline retarded. I'd need Math 050... So I just want to know how much it would cost. I'm sure financial aid wouldn't cover this so what am I looking at?

I called the school myself numerous times but the counseling department just never answers. They're quite busy...

A writer... specifically of fiction.. like I'd like to get into writing stories for games, or even just the dialogue that characters will speak. Things like that.

Or writing video game reviews. Things like that.

You have to be realistic....people do this shit for free. Unless you're already some kind of breakthrough writer like Maddox, don't even think about it.

You should go to a local trade school, take a year of training on a career(e.g Technician, Carpenter, Welder, Electrician) and get on with your life from there.

Unless you have something better in mind, because I'm still a Junior in High School.

Without wanting to be rude, don't listen to Oblong because he is giving you bad advice. If you want to be a writer, then learn to be a writer. Don't go to college to learn carpentry or welding, that isn't what interests you. I've got enough life experience and friends in different professions to tell you that we don't all end up as in jobs like that. People do get paid to write, your goal will be a challenge to achieve but it is definitely not unrealistic, if you think you can do it then there is really no reason not to at least try.

I can't answer your question though, sorry, I know very little about the USAmerican education system.

Yea I know, what I said earlier might have conjured a pretty bleak image of life, and I certainly didn't expect him to follow up with it anyway. But he doesn't sound entirely confident with writing. Of course, anyone can make it with the right determination and creativity.

Naked, I don't know what else to tell you, except to review all your options and explore other jobs.

I've also been toying with the idea of joining the military to see action. I like the idea of killing bad guys, the killing a person bit doesn't bother me if they have it coming, however I don't like the idea of being killed... lol that would kind of suck for my family and all... I'd hate for my grandparents to deal with that but honestly, they'd probably be gone by then anyway and everyone else I know can get by easily without me...

I don't really have good prospects on life and the most I can see myself amounting to is being some dead beat motherfucker. I really just don't see success in my future due to my SA. I'm 24 and I've never even held a job or had a girlfriend... fucking bullshit...

I want to join the military and be a badass!

I'm having doubts that this man is even 24.

And to the rest of you guys, what does this tell you about him?

Sorry but my opinion is that you did. Regardless of what you've dug up from Naked's posting history, you flat out told him that unless he is a literary prodigy he should give up the idea of being a writer, that is definitely something that I would consider bad career advice.

@Naked, if you have such little self confidence you won't last a minute as a professional soldier. You say you're "borderline retarded" and that you can't see yourself ever amounting to anything, you clearly don't believe in yourself so why on Earth would anyone trust you with their life, or a machine gun for that matter? Get educated, whether that is in writing or some other subject. If you can read a book then there is a job out there for you.

I didn't claim to know anything about war.

I read and I know that can never amount to experience, but I know killing someone who's trying to kill me is in no way a complicated decision...

A person can be confident in some things and not in others. I love exercising till I drop and am confident I can take care of myself in a fight...

It just so happens I'm not confident in trying to pick girls up...

anyway, its a waste of time... I prob won't join the military either...

maybe become a cop? lol

Writing is a real profession. However, I think it's bullshit that you need a degree to write. If Naked was that motivated, he should be writing all the time.

I'm just going to assume you're from the US? How expensive your classes are depends on your college as well as other factors such as if you are from the state that the college is in (which I'm going to guess that you are). Going to a college out of state increases the price by way more than necessary, just in case you were considering going to school elsewhere. Certain classes cost more than others, either talk to a counselor at the college, look online at their website (which they should have one), or go in while they're registering for classes and see for yourself how much it will all cost. I do not recommend you wait that long however, because trust me when I say that community colleges will be PACKED and you might not get into the class you want especially if it's something that a lot of people want/need to take such as math or English. One class should only cost you I'm guessing 100 something dollars excluding books, which I highly recommend you buy them pre-owned because they are really expensive. The price of the class also depends on credit hours, for example, my EMT class was about 500 dollars for one semester because of all the credit hours crammed into it and then another 200 or so for clinical and buying materials, while my English class was only about 80 dollars total. Math class shouldn't be that expensive at all.

As for military, if you are really not confident in your math abilities, I have bad news for you. You have to pass the ASVAB with a certain score to even qualify to get in, depending on what branch depends on the score, Air Force having the highest requirement and I think Marine Corps having the lowest. Along with that you have to KNOW you can pass the physical, get with your local recruiter if you're serious about it, but don't get your hopes up because the military is PACKED full right now, and even if they accept you, chances are they will kick you out to replace you with a new recruit, trust me on this because I was trying to get into the military, changed my mind but learned a lot about the process. It's not my job to tell you what you should or shouldn't do, but let me tell you that you can't trust everything the recruiter says. They are paid to lie basically, I never would've known if I didn't live in an Air Force base full of soldiers. The pay is pretty suckish but it's a job. Some MOS's are so full that you may not get to choose which, this happened to my fiance and they put him in another unit to do a different job than he joined for. Also, realize that in the current economy and state of the country that benefits to military personnel are getting to be almost non-existent. They will not pay for your college, you don't get health benefits anymore, they will say anything to you just to get you to join, do your homework first. Also if you do decide to join and they tell you they're going give you a certain amount of money for bonuses, GET IT IN WRITING in a contract, or else they WILL deny you and take your money, and without proof, you will never get that money back.

Any questions?

Edit-
On being a cop, it's a really long process, first, depending on what city you live in you have to go to college for 2-4 years and then you have to go to a police academy afterwards. Some cities you have to pay for the academy yourself and you have to take all the courses before they even consider hiring you. My husband tried becoming a cop, went to college for 2 years and then to a police academy, ended up in 50,000$ debt for student loans. He applied at 5 different police stations in different cities and none would hire him, in fact they will even lie if they don't want to hire you, they told him that they didn't recognize the college he went to. If you really want to become a cop, first, be very careful with your money because if you don't find a job and end up in debt it will be very hard on you.

I'm not saying "don't do this" or "don't get into this field", I just wanna make damn sure you don't end up in a situation you regret because it happens more often than not now.

You don't need a degree to learn anything. I can learn motorsport engineering in my spare time, I can teach myself to be one of the best, but I won't get that job at an F1 team unless I have the professional qualification to prove it. I think it's bullshit too but that's just the way it works and it's not going to change anytime soon. There are exceptions, people who land dream jobs just because they start a blog and get discovered by Penguin or some other publishing giant, but we're not all that lucky and you simply stand a better chance of getting any job if you have relevant degree. This is especially true if you want to work for a game studio as opposed to becoming self-employed.

Regardless, I fail to see what this has to do with you telling someone to give up on their chosen career path.

I really really want to take that math class and I just hope it isn't expensive... hopefully you're right about that. I'll call the school again tomorrow and ask, I hope they answer... I'd hate to drive all the way down there just to ask a question...

Yeah I've seen military recruiters at my old school... they all seemed like dicks imo. They just seem like fucking liars and its obvious....

I'm sure I can pass the ASVAB if I practice for it. I know about the physical part and I don't think I'm ready for that just yet but I will be. Actually I took ASVAB once... failed it on purpose though. At the time I was about 17 or 18 and a relative actually tried to force me to join the army. Practically dragged me into the damn recruiter's office without even letting me think about it... fucking asshole...

If you want to save money on classes, take some basic math course for free online before you go to college to take them. Ugh I sound like a spammer.....

https://www.khanacademy.org/

This is where I go to improve my shitty math skills, by the time I go back to college I will only take necessary courses rather than ones that I could avoid by doing studying on my own. You can also buy books and teach yourself, but I think on the internet it's much better. Also,

https://www.coursera.org/

Free full college courses from real universities! however, they take it very seriously, if you're serious about learning and don't have the money, go here, you can even get a document stating you finished the course and some colleges will give you the credit for taking that course online!!!

But if you prefer real courses, go ahead and spend some money on college, some people can't learn online and need a real teacher to ask questions to.

I've actually practiced with Khan's videos before... but I got to a point where I just couldn't do them anymore. I gave up, basically... besides, the social interaction in an actual school setting would do me good.
