Seriously, for the past couple of days I have hardly been able to walk. Ever step sends a jolt of pain up my calf... this is all thanks to my desperate need to lose a few pounds to shed that hideous potruding belly of mine.. I did some fucking intense cardio (my first in over a year) 2 days ago that really fucked me up... I've since had to skip two workouts because of it... |

But maybe thigh soreness would be wosre, I dunno. Calf might be the worst because your whole body has weight on it. Also, I'm not a big workout buff, but I do know that doing insanity or hardcore stuff after a year of sitting on your ass is asking for a rough next few days or maybe even a serious injury. You gotta work up to it and remember to stretch beforehand. Don't forget the importance of diet either. |

I hear this alot. Many folk underestimate the conditioning you first have to go through before you can even begin to think about getting into shape, especially after a long layoff. I'd recommend for the first week three sessions on alternate days, light - moderate exercise for between 1.5 - 2hrs. A bit of stiffness the morning after is expected (or the morning after the morning after, rather), even for the seasoned athlete but let it be known that paralysis does not belong in any workout regimen. And if you train sensibly and effectively, the days off will be totally necessary; spending time away from the gym is just as important as what you do in the gym. |

Diving in head first was a bit fool-hardy even if the commitment cannot be faulted. What jc55 has said is essentially spot on. Gradual increase in activity each time is what you aim for. Out of curiousity what cardio did you do? If you're running outdoors without the proper footwear, you can and will do damage to yourself. Shin splints are a bitch. Had them once, whenever I tried to run a few moments later it felt like the entire muscle groups in my lower legs had seized up and I'd be limping for the rest of the day. Infact, if you're doing any form of running or jogging, to start off with I'd stick to the treadmill, it's very forgiving on the joints, still need the proper footwear here too though. |

Yes, what jc55 is right here. Taking breaks is nearly even more important than the workout itself. If you don't take breaks you will not only destroy part of your muscles that won't be rebuilt again but also the training will have nearly no to absolutely no effect. It is called overload and supercompensation, those two have to be in balance, otherwise you will have no effect at best, at worst, you will harm your body as I already stated. Here are some charts to make visual how it works: Spoiler: click to toggle If you have further questions regarding training just ask, but it would be of course best if you had some trainer to give you some advice. |

Lol, 3rd day and still limping on. It is gradually going away though... I can walk better today than yesterday and I was good enough to finally do a weight training session... I've had to skip 2... and I may or may not have to skip tomorrow's since it includes a deadlift... or maybe I'll just skip the DL...
Since it was my first cardio session in over a year, I thought I was taking it easy by staying away from exercises that I used to like such as the Mountain Climbers.... instead what I did were just several sets of jumping jacks, running in place and squat jumps... but I did'em with little rest in between and until failure for the squat jumps and running in place... that was dumb I guess... but seriously... I'm tired of looking at myself in the mirror and seeing that belly... It fucking pisses me off lol... I've read around about calf soreness and some people go so hard that they're sore for a week and/or their calfs start to swell... For me the soreness has so far lasted 3 days and may last another... but I've experienced no swelling... every now and again I ice them and keep them elevated... and to think I was also contemplating adding 8 count bodybuilders in the next day or so... fuck that... another reason is I'm also thinking of joining either the Army or the Marines... oh yeah, its not the first time I've had soreness this bad... in fact I remember back in Middle school, my PE teacher had us do a bunch of squat jumps.... the day after, I couldn't even sit without massive pain... getting up was just as bad... I ended up missing almost a week of school because of this... |

still sore... its at it's worst when I get up after having been lying down for a while.. my right calf especially gets so stiff... and its sore to the touch still... my left one is still sore but I can walk perfectly on it. My right one is lagging behind and still causing me to limp slightly if I've been up for a while.... fucking lame... 4 days of this shit...and at this rate it may go on for another 2 days it looks like. seriously, I'm starting to think I seriously fucked something up. In my right calf, sometimes it feels like something is moving... like a knot or... I don't know the technical term... |

Did you try applying some warmth and light massages, as well as some moving and stretching?

Did squats today, didn't push it too hard but still got the burn taking steps ha. The first gym session is always horrific, you'll adapt to it as you do it more, never felt as bad as after doing a muscle group for the first proper workout. When you can't walk or have to keep your elbows at right angles for 3 days. It's hilariously painful. DEEP HEAT is your friend. Edited by Shyne, Jun 10 2013, 08:26:11 PM.

Make sure to have a brotein shake every day, even om non, trainig days, also if youre willing to drop money a BCAA suplement will speed your recovery, and make it more effective, ideally. Lats can be rough when sore, but legs are the worst |

Scratch that. Tin of tuna and a green smoothie does me fine, for protein that is. Not much for the soreness. |

Siding with Shyne on this one. Need protein no doubt, but when trying to lose weight drinking calories isn't the way forward. |

Nope. Supplemets are for professionals, gym enthusiasts and people who are simply looking to be fit don't need any of that crap. |
