taking aside the whole 'yay all asians have funny sounding names, let's turn it into a sex joke,' it's coverage on a flight that resulted in two deaths and one death from a sloppy rescue effort. it's one thing for a bunch of fucking retards online who have no concept of dignity or class to hold onto to be making jokes like this, but to take a piss during the actual coverage? 3 young people died, but they're asian, so let's make fun of their silly sounding names. you don't think maybe that could be deemed a little inappropriate from a professional broadcast journalist? |

Was it inappropriate? Yeah, no doubt. But the fact that the reporter couldn't catch on in time and said that on national news is completely hilarious. But yeah there's nothing funny about the crash itself of course, or even the fact that the pilots were Asian. But do I care about offending Asian people and their names in general? Fuck no. They make up the largest demographic in the world. Edited by The Governor, Jul 13 2013, 11:10:26 PM.

To take a page from the Dude's book, why does everything have to be such a fucking travesty with you? This thread is in the off topic chat area, therefore it does not need to be taken seriously. |

I think it's definitely a travesty when a fatal plane crash is used as an excuse for casual racism, and people are expected to laugh it off, because if they can't, then they're pussies. It shouldn't matter if this is an off-topic area of the forums, it's still not a free for all. We can't just expect to be able to have a laugh at the expense of anyone. There are, or at least should be limits, regardless of whether or not it is in the context of the off-topic forum. There is enough light-hearted subject matter in the world that we don't need to resort to defending this shit. |

Really? .............really? Personally, I let out a little chuckle due to the stupidity of that actually being said on air. I wasn't laughing at the tragedy or those who lost their lives. I remember a few months back, I think it was on BBC Radio Ulster, the DJ was talking about the Jimmy Saville scandal, and read out a text someone had sent in...................actually just checked and found it on youtube: Basically in the same boat as this. People found it funny, infact I believe Russell Howard used it in his Good News show to get a good few laughs. But no, this shouldn't be funny, because even though you are not laughing at actual people who were abused as a child by Jimmy Savile or the horrors the went through and pain it caused them, it's in bad taste. Even though the amazing level of stupidity displayed could be amusing, you're a fucking insensitive bastard. Stop making shit to be something it's not for fuck's sake. As for "casual racism" - this shit can be found in many threads on this forum used in a non-serious jokey way, so why is it an issue now? Fucking........really? Come on, guys. Casual racism is always an issue, and race jokes such as this definitely fall under that. I'm not going to laugh at a Chinese person being called Ho Lee Fuk and more than I would laugh at a gay person being called a faggot in jest by a heterosexual. I wouldn't walk up to a random Chinese person and start mocking their language, they would probably punch me in my mouth, and rightly so. What gives me the right to condone exactly the same thing from the safety of behind a keyboard? That alone is stupid and wrong, the fact that in this case people actually died as a result of the incident they are making light of is just for bonus points. I live across the street from Russell Howard and tbh outside of his on-screen persona, he seems like a bit of a cunt to me. Comedians will use whatever they can to get people to laugh. Doesn't matter though because I don't care about comedians. Too many people treat the Internet like a moral no man's land when really the things they say reflect on them as an actual human being. If you want to play the bad guy without anyone looking down on you for that, then you need to go to drama school and become an actor. |

Heh. I don't think anyone is defending the intern who is said to be responsible for putting this on air, or the reporter(even though I don't think it was quite her fault). Once again, the funny part is that this slipped into a new broadcast without being caught. The nature of the crash shouldn't be relevant. When the media fails this hard, it has to be funny. |

There's a huge difference in in light hearted non-serious joking and walking up to a random person and mocking their skin colour or language, the type of jokes I make when with friends are not always the kinda thing I'd repeat when around strangers. I was born and bread in Wales for Christ's sake, I've lost count of the amount of jokes about the Welsh or Welsh language I've heard, not ever been offended by them. The Simpsons and Family Guy make jokes about the British all the time for stereotypes like posh accents and bad teeth, don't nobody care. These things are not being directed at any individual, nor are they intended in a hateful manner towards the race or country of origin in question, same with jokes about the Chinese or French, Greek or Indian. YOU are the one making race an issue here, jokes can be made about anybody for the sound of their voice, way they look, height, weight, mannerisms or whatever else, we are all human, no matter what colour our skin or language we speak. These things aren't a problem nor an issue, banter is banter. Obviously walking up to complete strangers and making jokes about them is not something to recommend and judging people by the way they look, skin colour, country of origin, language they speak etc. is plain ignorance or feeling hatred towards them because of these things is fucking wrong, as is deliberately trying to offend. People did die as a result of this incident and that is tragic, but being amused by the amazing levels of stupidity for what was broadcast live on air is not the same as being amused by those deaths, the joke names used have been used a fuck tonne of times in different kinds of jokes, they aren't directed at those people who died directly and they aren't intended to hurt, disrespect or spit on anyone's grave. Yes, I can see why a news broadcast isn't the appropiate place for these jokes to be used, but at the same time there's no need to make an issue out something that was never an issue to begin with. Oh, and nice to see you can openly call somebody a cunt, speaking ill of someone and using hateful ways to express your feelings towards them, but a light hearted name joke is the devil here. |

I really have no problem judging someone on their actions. It is a little different, don't you think? I can only speak from personal experience of course, and I can only say what I actually think, and he strikes me as a genuinely rude cunt. Sorry but that's honestly the best description I can give. I can't claim to be a wonderful person who loves everyone and is nice all the time by the way. Regardless I think you are missing the point here. What your friends say or do, or what The Simpsons say or do is of little consequence, it certainly doesn't excuse what happened in this particular case. We can't use adult cartoons which historically have thrived by challenging political correctness to justify this, it's an entirely different incident. Someone thought it would be a good idea to use a tragedy to poke fun at an entire nationality. If you don't see the problem then I don't know what to tell you. And it doesn't matter which way you spin it, jokes or not, casual racism is casual racism. Whether or not casual racism is acceptable in the context of a cartoon is a debate I will have if you wish, but the outcome will have no bearing whatsoever on whether or not casual racism is acceptable in the context of a live broadcast which serves the sole purpose of informing people as to what is going on in the world. Can you imagine the uproar that would have happened in this country if a news team had used Lee Rigby's death as an excuse to poke fun at someone? Significant sections of society would not have just been calling for someone's job, they would have been calling for their head. |

Guys, becuase someone laughs at these it doesn't mean they don't care about the people who died, or that it's funny because they're asians, don't take it that deep. It just means we laughed at what happened on live television, and it was funnier that the women in the news said the names and didn't even realize. The fact that I laughed at them doesn't mean that, as OJ said, ''since they're asians les's laugh at them'', no, damn fucking no, that's taking it incredibly way farther than it actually goes, I didn't think it through AND THEN laughed, it's not like I laughed at the accident. God guys. |
