Kept typing, learned the placement of letters, and started doing it.

I naturally just was able to do it. I can't even remember when I learned. I've never even really THOUGHT about it. My fingers just subconsciously know where they are at all times. I don't even use the notches on F and J (and as a test, I felt the keys without looking to work out where the notches were - haha!) for reference... at least I don't think I do. My fingers naturally start near WASD on the left due to PC games. I just hate how I don't use all of my digits; I just was self-taught so my technique is sloppy as hell.

Yep, meant to have very set positions for all 10 digits. Very little movement. That's why my technique sucks dick, I type well over half the keys with 2 fingers on my left hand despite being right handed.
