So, I've been in mandatory military service for the past few months. I believe the word for it is conscription, as every man has to take part in my country. I think that makes me a conscript. Reminds me of Russia. (Thanks Red Alert 2) I still have a month of service left. I feel a bit divided on the whole subject. On the other hand I think these few months have been great as I've met (and "fought" with) awesome people, and I've learned new things about myself. On the other I don't like this at all. The thought of having to take part in a war scares me. Nobody wants to die, I'm no exception. Are there any "soulmates" in MGSF? I would like to hear past experiences and opinions. Let me know what you think even if your country doesn't use conscription. Edited by MiiQ, Nov 19 2013, 07:45:30 PM.

We don't have national service or conscription here in the UK, which I'm pretty grateful for to be honest. I can certainly see the benefits that it can provide but I personally would hate the idea that I'd have to take a couple of years out of my life to serve the country's military when I could be using those years to study and better myself as a human being. Out of curiousity, what country are you from? |

I already have strong feelings against the army... The thought of having to serve with them would make me leave the UK. |

its ridiculous, some people just arent the army type. If the uk tried to make me do this then i would refuse. . I'm glad you enjoy it though mate as i'm sure its very rewarding if your into it. There are certainly aspects that i think i would enjoy about being in the army but i wouldnt join because someone said i had to. |

Finland. I agree with what you said about the army delaying studying and such. Thankfully, mandatory service can't last longer than a year. I got lucky(?) and ended up with 6 months, the shortest possible time. |

My opinion on this is the same as it is on drafts. Shouldn't happen in a "free" country or anywhere as far as I care. It's an infringement on political freedom and human rights. Not everyone views the military or the interests they're pursuing in a positive light, and others might just be pacifists for religious/ethical reasons.

I gotta admit that I would've passed on this quicker than you can say meow if it were possible. Well, actually it is, but then you'd have to work somewhere (libraries etc) for a year and for free. No salary. I guess you could say that the army is a part of the culture here. Almost no one wants to be here which actually helps create a tighter group. There's a certain way of counting the days that you have left. The days are thought of as mornings, and everybody keeps track of their "tj", which stands for "tänään jäljellä, mornings left today". There are lots of little things here that really make you feel like you're a part of a community. Even though I kinda hate this. |

what if you said no to working in the library? How bad is prison in sweden? If this was the uk i would go to prison, eat loads of food, go to the gym everyday and smoke a joint and watch tv/read at night. |

I believe you have to serve about 170 days in prison. Prisons in Finland aren't that bad from what I've heard. You even get to go home for a few days every once in a while. There exists a nasty loophole if you're a jehova's witness. If you can prove that you're an active part of the community you can delay your service 3 years. Nothing prevents them from getting another delay immediately after the first one. There have been a few moments in the army that I'll probably remember for forever. A 30km march in full combat gear, a few weeks ago I got to fire a rocket launcher and shooting real bullets on fullauto is sweeeeeeet. |

finland, sorry. I would just go to prison then to be fair. Firing a rocket sounds awesome, did you shout 'LIQUID!!!' then only part that appeals to me is having a go of the machine guns and stuff, i know a guy in the paratroopers who gets to jump out of planes which sounds very cool. I am not allowed in the army anyway so i think i would be exempt if the uk had conscription. |

Actually, it's maxium of 173 days in prison (last time I checked) and there have been some talks that instead of prison you get parole but I don't know what was the result on that subject.
There's also loophole that you act crazy, get X years delay and act crazy again during interview where you are checked again. Few of my friends got release from service that way. |

I live in the US, and we damn well learned our lesson with Vietnam. I plan to join the military (Airborne all the way. "rendezvous with destiny" motherfuckers!) after college (Or maybe high school, if I haven't decided on a college yet.) just for the experience, and because I'm a bit of a patriot. However, being the military type, if it's not your thing, you damn well shouldn't be forced to do it. |

Better to rule in hell.

I find it acceptable only in times of extraordinary circumstances. if say the US went to war with a border country like Mexico or Canada, I'd fully expect a draft to be called. I also think it's alright for smaller nations, Switzerland, Israel, Finland etc because they have a very limited population. With the exception of Israel these are also relatively safe places. |

Well I guess the fact that Finland is a small country is exactly the reason for conscription. We couldn't have a decent sized army any other way. |

Yeah cause we'd fucking nuke you bitches. Conscription should happen if it is necessary for a nations survival. If you value your freedom, you boils be willing to fight for it, and if you don't value your freedom... Well I don't talk to communists so that doesn't matter. |

There has been a lot of discussion about giving up conscription and starting an army in which you get paid and so on. It would be more expensive and the army would be even smaller. But in a way I think the army could be better, as I've been in service for almost 6 months and I really don't think that I'd be a good fighter in a real situation. Of course I can shoot and I know how to do what I've been trained for, but still. I'm just a kid with a gun. |

Hello MiiQ! I'm also from Finland, I served in border jaeger guerrilla troops in the north lapland, Ivalo. How about you? Where are you serving? I personally liked the experience. Of course I would never want to be in a war, but as it is tradition here in Finland - to make men out of boys.. more or less lol. Anyway, I absolutely wanted it, I wanted a great experience, great new friends, test my self both physically and mentally. You learn so much of yourself in there so I never regret that I chose the place to be. After all, there's most field training up there. More than in the army, as we don't serve under the army but the border groups. Actually, I'm excited to go to the "refresher trainings" whenever the duty calls. Edited by Cpt. Obviously no conscription in the United States since Vietnam. I, myself, agree with your county in mandatory service. I do believe that everyone should serve in some way. It doesn't have to be combat arms. Then there's a part of me that says it's pointless. Guys who don't want to be in don't do well in combat because they don't want to be there. In places such as the UK and US, why not recruit high-quality troops that want to be there and fight? There are plenty of willing people, especially with the shit economy here in the US. It's actually more difficult to join ours now due to the drawdown/budget cuts. Where are you from OP? I myself have respect for all soldiers regardless of their branch or even nation for that matter (as long as you're a good guy.) There's a part of me that admires conscripts more than volunteers for the simple fact that conscripts leave so much behind involuntarily at a time in their life that isn't of their choosing. Edit: Oz, that's fuckin' awesome. Hurry up though man! Join ASAP. Every branch is experiencing budget cuts. 11x Option 4 contracts will be hard to come by. In the worst situation, you'll just have to wait, but recruiters can be picky today due to the downsizing. Are you hoping to get in with 82nd or jump unit in Italy? Or do you just want to be Airborne qualified? Edited by Sundown, Nov 28 2013, 04:42:10 PM.
