Who? Oz? It's not terribly hard to join now. It's just difficult getting in if you have any medical, criminal, or educational problems - and MOS slot availability is a problem. Guys in Marine Corps want infantry, so those hard to come by (03xx infantry field surprisingly is a struggle to get.) Army is probably his best bet getting any combat arms MOS since the applicant pool is wider and you have more people shooting for specialty MOS'. Otherwise, the cuts just effect the guys giving piss poor performance that are already in. You can expect to serve the standard 4 year active 4 year inactive reserve with no re-enlistment too.

Hey, I'm just a lowly cableguy. A kelaperse, if you will, in Vekaranjärvi. I can only imagine what you've gone through. Sundown, I'm from Finland. I would love to be a fighter pilot or a sniper. Urban war training would be sweet too. I recently saw loads of paratroopers while traveling back to the unit. They already had their bronze wings from their first jump. I'd love to try that. But cables are what I do. I shouldn't really complain as this is what I signed up for, and every job in the army is important during a war. Tj 21. |

If you don't mind me asking; why? What do you have against the armed forces? @OP - No, I live in the Irish Republic, although I'm from the UK. Neither country has any form of conscription. UK abolished National Service over 50 years ago and became an all volunteer force which works well. I did want to enlist in the British Army as either an observation post assistant/artillery observer or a combat medical technician, but I got deferred for medical reasons, I can't apply again for another two years when I'll be 23. It will be pretty difficult since our armed forces are downsizing and the Army plans to decrease the regular full time forces and build up the reserve force (Army 2020) since we're leaving Afghanistan in 2014. I don't agree with conscription. It's a waste of resources forcing people who don't want to be there to stay, especially in peace time. I also think it's sexist as most countries that operate it only tend to conscript men, Israel is one of the few countries that conscript both sexes I think, it just seems immoral to me to threaten young men with jail, a criminal record or not allow them access to things like public funds, yet women the same age get off scot free. On the flipside it denies the opportunities/benefits of conscription, such as learning a trade to young women as well, since not all military jobs are combat. Either they should include both sexes or not conscript anybody at all (preferably this) IMO. I'm surprised countries like Finland, Denmark, Norway etc hasn't had that law changed on gender equality grounds by MRAs and feminists. Edited by Soviette, Nov 28 2013, 09:54:51 PM.

I see, MiiQ. Those stories you Finland guys have are pretty cool to be honest. It's neat hearing about foreign armed forces. And that's awesome, Oz. There couldn't be a better generation of bad ass than WW2 veterans, especially Airborne. |

Right now I'm in our last big practice "camp out" that lasts for a few days more. After that we'll mostly be returning our gear and cleaning up the place for the new guys starting their service in January. I'm thinking of writing a longer post(even though I'm a horrible writer) about the army after I'm done with it(16 days...) to share some experiences and all that. Heavily-Armed Trooper

I actually liked my military service (or atleast more than disliked it), it started at the beginning of 2012 and i was in Parola for 6 months as an panssarijaakari, that's something like mechanized infantry in English. My more precise duty was to be an missile loader in an anti-tank squad that was in a way an special unit of the mechanized tank unit (or something like that), but in reality it was just your'e regular panssarijaakari unit with the difference that each unit had to carry one missile launcher as an extra weight in addition to the regular rpg's of course. I was lucky enough to be one of the 4 guys to actually get to shoot one of those missiles, one was worth about 20 000 euros I was also one of the 2 guys that actually hit the damn tank. I also fired two apilas heavy rocket launchers ("only" worth around 2000 euros each), nailed them too. The actual Missile launcher (or how we called it: ohjuskone = missile machine but that sounds kinda silly so i just call it launcher) was pretty neat, one could lock-on with it to any object or just use manual aim (The missile's actually had an camera just like stinger in MGS and some other games), it even had thermal vision and iirc night vision too. Thought the lock-on wasn' really that usefull really, 2 of the 4 guys that missed, missed because of that crappy lock-on, first guy couldn't lock-on at all because of all the fog the camera couldn't see anything and the other guy used thermal vision and fired towards a tank that was already set on fire, been fired by all kinds of tanks and other nasty things, and just because he used lock-on with thermal vision, just before hitting the tank we all had been firing at, the missile rose up because it hadn't actually been locked on to the tank but to the heat, that was moving upwards and so was the missile... Anyways glad to see more other Finns in this site but i'm actually curious to hear about people from other countries than Finland who have served in their countrys military service. |

Nice Hasa! I fired a real 66 KES 88 (LAW) during my service.. can't remember what was the price of it, not around of the prices of APILAS though. ^^ we ambushed a tank and and group of soldiers and then gtfo as fast as possible lol. I shot the fake tank and it was spot on, in the midst of the tower and center. Instructors were happy. I kinda miss the days in the army, even though we barely got free time, and even then it was very limited as in Ivalo we only got our first evening-freetime (to get to the town, outside of the base) after 91 days lol. |
