We have arrived.

I know there's a thread on Facebook users or something so I dunno maybe this can go with that, if so do your thing mods, I just wanted to make a thread about this. Anyway, something I've thought about a few times but at the same time never paid much attention to was when I add new people on Facebook and see they've got tons of friends, these sorts of people that literally live on Facebook endlessly. Got no issue with that, I know some people are just like that (and annoying in that way). But the last 2 days I added people out of my class that I get along with pretty well and have some assignments to do with. Checked their profiles and they both have over 700 friends and around 1.5K photos uploaded and I just think, how? I literally feel like I live in a completely different world to these people now and am completely alien to them in a way even though, at the same time, I felt like I knew them, and still in some ways do. I had the same thing before with someone else that I thought I got along with and had an interest in, but I soon realised (or felt, might be a more accurate word) that with the amount of people she endlessly conversed with on Facebook and other sites and all the photos and everything that we just weren't on the same level. I mean I'm sitting here in my pyjamas now on a gaming forum posting this with the football on in the background. I'll stay like this until 11.30 and go to bed like a good boy, get up and do the same things I did today, go to college, have lunch between classes while doing a little work at the library, come home, play some games and do more work and bed time. It's weird because people complain about the likes of Facebook and other social media websites about removing real personal interaction from the world yet even though I'm not in that little world I'm the one that feels removed from everything. Then again I don't drink and don't do the night-life thing any more so maybe that's why? My point is... I don't know actually, lost my train of thought and can't remember why I made this thread or what I am trying to argue. Feels like my last essay. This is more like a blog isn't it? OH SHIT I'M GONNA PRESS POST TOPIC |

I have almost 600 friends in fb, and I barely use it. Log in like twice a week (more if I'm close to travel). But I have an account since what? 2006, I think? So yeah I accumulated fb friends during this period, and if I hadn't deleted a bunch of pics I'd probably have hundreds of them too. I know nobody asked me, but topic has no point so why should my response do? |

I think what these people do is add people they know, as well as people they know OF. They'll add people they bumped into in a hallway once, and they'll add people they met that one time at a party who happens to be a friend of a friend of a friend. I guarantee that any Facebook user with 700 friends won't speak to at least half of them. I personally don't believe that Facebook removes real personal interaction, because the human race isn't yet at a point where they think it's more fun to talk on chat than it is to actually meet up at the pub. I find it a useful tool for catching up on what people are up to, as well as organising get togethers I might well miss out on without Facebook. |

Yeah I dunno wtf I wrote tbh. I guess my point is that it's like one has to join in in this world of endless social media attending and using Twitter and all this other shit to feel like one has a life or friends and to stay in the loop, otherwise you're just forgotten about. I guess what I'm trying to say is I love you guys |

For some, the number of friends on FB seems to be a status symbol. Kind of a "look how popular I am" kind of thing. I'm not on FB and I don't intend to be. |

^ If that's true, then I must be really unpopular, having only little over 100 friends, which most of them are relatives or dead. |

I had a fb for like 4 or 5 years. Barely broke over 100 friends--most of whom I hadn't seen in years irl--at my peak of activity and then did nothing but waste time on it scrolling through rants and relationship memes. Finally deactivated it a while ago, and so far I'm pretty happy with my decision. With employers and schools monitoring people's fbs more and more, it makes me feel more at ease too. |

I have a bit over 100 "friends" on mine and they're only good friends, family and people I know from school from way back. I could probably even cut down that last group to five people or so... I'm not a big fan, asside from the fact that it can be useful for contacting r people who live far, far away. That's the only reason I still have one, otherwise I would probably get rid of it. It kills the true meaning or feeling of what friendships are about, if you let it slip and get lazy and practically live in such a place. In my opinion. |

i have like 18 friends on fb, and like 15 of which are people on this site. i only use it to communicate with you twats outside threshold of mgsf. my irl friends i just stick with texting, sexting and hanging out anywhere but our apartments. i think some look at the hundreds upon hundreds of fb friends thing is a sense of validation and human worth, or perhaps vanity. because none of us know 800 people, most of us barely remember what we ate for breakfast, only to realize we haven't eaten breakfast in 10 years \_(:/)_/ i've seen and known so many people glued to their fb, updating their life play-by-play, soaking in the likes, and it's silly tbh. i respect people who use it to keep in touch with friends they can't keep in touch with in person or use it to network because that's how god intended fb to be used when he hired jesse eisenberg to steal it from spiderman. me? my beard requires no validation. least of all from you hairless prepubescent secret 40 year olds. |

I mostly have it to keep in touch with old school friends, family and friends from overseas who I don't have other regular ways of contacting. I don't update my status or anything a lot. Mostly sign in to see if I have messages from people and whatnot. |

I quit facebook for a few years because it was a blatant way of people to compare their social lives like it was a competition. Now it's not so bad, that competition has moved to twitter so facebook is a lot more genuine. Still I have < 200 friends due to that period of inactivity. |

Facebook is a great tool, amazing one really. Yeah sure some people may see it as a social competition or something, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy it without engaging in this shit. Fuck some people use real social life as a competition of sorts, are you gonna quit that too? |

I only have like 15 people on Facebook because I adapt to a way where I will only add those who are close to be, so from family to best friends and that kind of element. I use it every day but I don't spend much time on there but I only really use it to talk to the fiancee when she is out and whatnot. When me and her move in, I won't bother using Facebook anymore. I don't take being inactive to a site I registered on too fondly. |

Yeah gotta agree with this, people often ask me if I saw something on Facebook, and I often say "I don't go on Facebook" when really I'm on it every night, but I only use it to message my close friends. I never check the home page because it's just full of shit like "like if you think our troops are brave, keep scrolling if you want bin laden to come back and redo 911", pure stupidity. I look at my notifications and that's it. |
