It's 200 times bigger than any previous game for Afghanistan alone. Nothing underwhelming about that.
Save the "afganistan alone". Kojima already confirmed the whole game is 200 times bigger. So unless afganistan is the only place around (which I think not because or the weird separations of the map) then ok, but we can't say the "alone" thing either since that is expecting something it's not happening.

The English version Has confirmed that the whole map is the Afghanistan and half of it is blurred by the clouds because they didn't want to show it.
I'm really blown by the size but I hope that there is other maps like Africa with a jungle setting. Anyone remember this:

They did said it was clouding and that they didn't want to show all the map. But they never said it was Afganistan alone... maybe my mistake, if it is then please tell in which minute/second they said it.

Well this isn't exactly scientific but:

GZ area in Red: 878 pixels.
Total square: 405719 pixels.

So their map is showing the square over 400x Ground Zeroes already, if they drew the km markings and the GZ map to the right scale.

Based on the English version of the Kojima Station episode, it sounds like this map is the whole of the game. Of course, they don't go into too much detail but the manner in which they talk about the map and how they don't want to show the whole thing just yet tells me that this is the whole game - which is still amazing because it's huge.

What I'm curious about is if they'll just keep the whole "going outside the mission area" thing for certain sections of the story. Will we be able to go from one end of the map to the other near the start of the game, or would we have to wait for certain beats in the story, like some of the GTA games?

Good question. I think the game could still have roads leading off the map, but think it will use the whole map as the mission zone each time like in GZ.
But the game should open up with a number of different maps for different countries, so you won't be able to see everything from the start, and there could be indoor/walled off sections which only become accessible in certain missions.

I'm perfectly okay with this being the whole game to be honest. As long as there's a variety of ecosystems that is.
PEACE will come.

It has a scale of 4000m, that's 2.5 miles square, that's not big, it's smaller than GTA3 :cookiemonster:

Note - I am being obviously sarcastic. It seems the scale isn't being discussed at all. It's way more than 200 times bigger than GZ.

I'm buzzing so much for this. A mgs title that will be truly huge. I don't just think in terms of space but also in story and longevity. Kojima is almost a god lol

Maybe Kojima's team was wrong about the GZ proportional size. Not trying to be pesimist but saying TPP game is smaller than it actually is... well that's contrary to average marketing, in any case you would say it's bigger than it really is. That's the main reason why I don't think that map is only Afganistan, but a combined map, just like the ones of previous games showed there.

I've read quotes of Kojima saying 300 times and 200 times as big, so maybe he's not sure himself! If he cared exactly how big it was he wouldn't be rounding to the nearest hundred. :P I think the main thing is it's hundreds of times bigger.

My hunch is that map only shows the middle east map, which is probably just Afghanistan, but might even cross into another country like the USSR!
Also I expect a lot of that map to be unreachable around the edges, a bit like the Red Dead Redemption map which only lets you explore about 50% of the rectangle it's in.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.

Probably GTA style since there just got to be some locations you are not supposed to see from the get go.
If the world is strictly seperated in missions and instances, then it will be like Peace Walker.

Look sir, droids

If the whole game is in Afghanistan, sans Hospital and Base, i wonder how the story might develop, since i initially thought you would rescue Kaz and that's it, the map is done, but following the GZ style of spawing/starting it's possible you just keep revisiting the map even after rescuing him, i don't know.

You too have known loss, and that loss torments you still. You hope hatred might someday replace the pain, but it never goes away.

I'm not sure but hearing them for the second time, the blurred portion maybe Africa and the game is still huge but the way they said this map continue toward the end felt like they are talking about Afghanistan.

I don't know why people keep repeating the hospital portion of the game!!

Didn't Kojima said that this part is linear so I don't think it is going to be huge.
