I don't tip because waiters don't do anything other than bring my food over. Bollocks to them.

Do people actually calculate the tipping % from their check?

The lowest tip I'd give is $1, and it's only if the total order is above $8 or so.

For pizza delivery I'd throw in $2-3 for tips, depending on the occasion.

I also tip housekeepers who tidy up your room in a hotel

I swear this topic has been discussed before :glare:

What people seem to be forgetting is that by simply going to that waiters/waitresses restaurant and paying for a meal, you're already putting money into their pockets.

FYI#1: I ALWAYS tip, even when I'm broke as a fucking joke because I believe in tipping. I've got friends who work their asses off as waiters/waitresses. But I'm not gonna be a dick to people who dont tip, nor will I be an ignorant knob and judge that persons character based simply on their reluctance to tip. They work hard for their money too, so they have every right to spend it how they choose. And their finances are none of my business anyway.

At the same time, its unfair to be criticized for not tipping a waiter. There are countless jobs out there in which the required work ethic is equal to or even greater than a waiter, and they're paid the same shit money (some even less). Do you tip that janitor who cleans up your piss in public restrooms? What about your trash collector whos gotta endure the fumes of those towering trash cans of yours that are filled up from last nights party? Nope.

FYI#2: I'm Murican.

If you can't afford to tip, you really have no business going out to eat.

Ask any server. They'll tell you the same thing. Going out to eat part of what you expect to pay should be somewhat tip. I'm rather astonished by the replies I've seen on here. Then again, most of you are from Europe.

I have no smartphone so no topping calculator for me.

That said I rarely eat out anywhere tipping is required. When I do, I usually seem to go for about the 10~15% range. Always seems to be a multiple of the total or one of 5 too. Last bill I had the total was about $30 and I tipped about $4~5.

I've heard some places have mandatory tipping (they're not popular for that)

That being said, I've had friends who were servers. Note the past tense. Most didn't like it. That being said, they didn't complain much whenever someone didn't tip well.

What kind of customer you are is what it really boils down to. If your bill is $90 and you leave $2 after sucking down pops, being disrespectful, running your server numerous times. . .thats unacceptable.

lmao like I said I have friends who are servers who bust their ass as if they were immigrants that lacked green cards. None of them have ever expected me to tip, and they struggle just as bad as everyone else. Some even worse.

Tipped the guy at a sushi bar $10 bucks for a $15 carry our, only because it ws close to closing and he still made it for me. IF they go out of their way i usually make it worth it.

From 10-20 dollar i tip 2-3
20-50 i tip 5- 10 depending on how good the service is.
anything above $100 i usually don't tip for some weeirrddd reason. {rpbably because in my mind they already made their money, if it's a chip in thing with a group, then yeah i'll tip then.

In the UK it's usually 14% I think. Whatever comes in the check I'll tip, if it doesn't then I'll just tip 20 cause it's easier to calculate.

This, essentially. The stuff you pay for the food is supposed to cover all bases, including service and the like. Tipping is a gesture of courtesy that is a good deed, but it should never be forced nor should you be seen as the big evil man putting them waiters down just because you expect it to be like practically any other service.

Yeah same here. I've got deep respect and admiration for people like that. Some dudes are just really fucking cool.

About a year and a half ago, my friends and I stopped by a small diner after a night out. This old man, the owner, had sent his employees home early because business was slow. Anyway, it had already been closed for about twenty mintues I think (we had lost track of time) but when he saw us through his windows as we were turning around to leave, he went out of his way to welcome us in.

The old man cooked a fucking 5 star meal for us, hung out with us and shared some stories and laughs and even threw the tab on the house (which was like $120 bucks or some shit). Obviously, we were all so moved by his kindness that we stayed behind and helped him clean up his dinner (even though he said it was okay).

As we left, we put together our money and my friend slipped it next to his register with the receipt without him knowing but leaving it where he could see it. Next time we showed up, he gave us the money back and told us he meant what he said and he was just grateful to have had a good time hanging out, getting to know us and cooking for us as he's a very passionate chef.

Nowadays, we make sure to meet up there at least 2-3 times a month, and the old man always makes sure we're taken good care of. Dude is just such a fucking awesome, good person man. And I usually empty my pockets for tips because of that lol.

Haha god damn, i'd definitely tip the hell out of that guy for extraordinary service, and just being..nice. See, that's tipping material. The service is more than you expect and you give. Even as multiple people have said, when it doesn't apply to waiters. This barber I always go to, always tip him because he's a great dude and does a great job, but being expected to do it for every single standard service is what i'm against.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, tipping is just common courtesy. Even though waiters earn minimum wage in Europe (or at least most countries in Europe, I reckon), tipping makes the difference between a shitty and a decent income. Usually the waiters are the ones busting their balls the hardest, because they're the communication between what's going on in the restaurant, the kitchen and the general organisation. So I think this deserves at least some form of recompensation by the customers. Even if the food is bad, they should be tipped, because ultimately that's usually the kitchen's fault, and the waiter is just trying to do their best, but they look like an ass because of others.

Maybe I'm a low tipper, but I'll never not tip. Unless the service was abysmal, but I've never had the "luck" to experience that, fortunately.

It was kind of a hard habit to break. You get weird looks here in Japan if you leave a tip because they are paid a decent salary. Anyways, I think it would just be easier back stateside if they did the same thing.
