If the restaraunt charges gratuity automatically then I don't tip. if there's a tip jar, Like at a Five Guy's or something, I just throw in the change. If I'm at a sit down restaraunt and my bill is $30 or less I tip $3-5 depending on service. After $30 I go 10-20% depending on service. |

With large orders usually an automatic gratuity is added to the bill, that way servers won't get stiffed after busting their asses |

In the UK we have minimum wage so tipping isn't as important as it is in the States. Also, a lot of restaurants in the UK include a service charge in the bill as well so your tip is already done for you. You can request it be taken off if you really want to but most people don't, for obvious reasons. In summary, in the UK waiting staff are paid minimum wage or above and they are usually automatically tipped as well. Therefore proving that United States system is BS. |

US employees are treated like crap altogether, though. Not just waiters/waitresses. |

Depends on where you work, in the food industry then yeah it's a crapshoot, there's a reason most folks only apply for those jobs as a last resort. |

We have minimum wage here in the US, servers have a minimum wage as well, it's just lower than regular minimum wage. They have to claim their tips (so Uncle Sam gets his piece) up to regular minimum wage, otherwise the restaraunt has to make up the difference. Anything left over after claiming up to minimum wage is tax free money (you're supposed to claim it but nobody does). |

I do. Unless my parents are taking me somewhere, in which case they would tip the normal amount. |

my point is that students don't tip, even when we occasionally go somewhere nicer than McDonalds. Also it's kinda unfair that waitresses in expensive restaurants often get tipped hundreds of pounds for doing the exact same job as someone working in a student area where they get nothing. Just another reason why the whole tipping system is awful. |

I'm sure they cater to those rich people far more than the waitresses do at Denny's. |

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat.
I worked at a restaurant, and I've seen people make hundred DOLLAR tips, but never hundred pound tips (That's probably like 200+ dollars?) and do make that much, they need to bust their asses off, they earn it. |

If all they do is open a beer then they don't deserve a tip. It's cool to not tip someone who you feel doesn't deserve a tip, but to say "Oh I don't tip" makes you a dickhead. |

But that's what 90% of bartenders SEEM to expect. I give them a 5 dollar bill for a drink that costs $4 and hey where the fuck did my change go? Oh you kept it cause you're assuming I was going to give it to you anyways, I see...

i tip at subway believe it or not, and i tip at chipotle, but only if they're nearby locations that i'll visit frequently. if i can afford to pay $7.25 for a steak burrito with white cilantro rice, tons of hot sauce and a whisper of cheese to complement the sauce, then i can afford to drop a dollar in the tip bin as a thank you, and as a hope that they'll remember me and treat me right, which 9 times out of 10, turns out to be the case with a comped hook up here or there. if not, then at least the staff is a lil chattier and chill with me than the usual john and jane twat who comes in ordering an incorrect burrito. |

Nope, sorry, but that's bullshit. When I was a student, I would go to Frankie and Benny's once a term with my housemates as a treat when our loans go in. A loan that has to last me for 4 months. I know full well that when we go home after we've been out, I'll be eating crap for tea every night for the rest of the term. So there's no way that I'm tipping a waiter money that I need to last, but at the same time I feel we deserve to go out and actually get a proper meal every now and then even when money is tight. |
