4.9999 is like, approximately 5, but it's not exactly 5. It's only 5 when you round off the decimal to save space, but in mathematics sometimes you can't just round it off like that if you're dealing with a specific value. So (4.9999≈5) is a statement that makes more sense than (4.9999=5) If you keep going more in depth with the decimals the difference will never be 0 because that's not how math works, it's just that eventually it won't be worth the effort to keep up with it so you have to round off a decimal when necessary but don't just do that right off the bat or you're gonna have a bad time, especially if it's for a test. Allow me to indulge in making an idiot of myself here, because the philosphies regarding mathematics are really something. It's only one if you round though surely? It's not so much the quanitity represented between the recurring 9s but expressing it because we are in a world of limits and contraints so you go for the absolute finite margin to measure and round off. But in the realm of numbers those 9s would go on forever, stretching out to 1 but never reaching it. because forever is forever. Also how do you get from 1 to .9 if .9999=1? Is the perception we have of numbers too basic for their complexity? |

Nobody here is taking reportability into account. You report one place higher than you can reliably measure. So if your measurement is 0.9999 you report 0.999 because the final number was the one with the highest chance of variability. |

If I have got the right end of the stick, what you're saying is that infinity cannot exist between two rational numbers? Would the problem be any different if you were to deduct progressively smaller fractions from an integer, let's say 1. Would it not therefore stand to reason that declaring 0.999... as being exactly equal to 1 is the equivalent of saying: 1 - 1/(n) = 1 - 1/(n+1)? To me that is a nonsense. As far as I understand it, infinity/zero are essentially mathematical black holes. It doesn't matter what you throw at them, they're always going to win in the end. |

No it's irrational because it doesn't have a comprehensible value, it's not even a real number. Just pretend € means "element of" 1 € I, 1 € N, 1 € R 0.999... =/= € I, N, R 0.999... € i |

Also if 1.999... =2 1.99999...=n 2=n1 So if n=n1 we can do anything to both and get the same answer. n1!=2 n!=ø 2=/=ø, n=/=n1, 1.999...=/=2 |

from a purely mathematical standpoint,0.(9) is NOT equal to 1.why?because infinite numbers are not all equal(ie the limit of n and 2n is not the same as n gets closer to +infinity).a number between 1 and 0.(9) can easily be obtained by doing (1+0.(9))/2. from a physics/engineering/everyday use point of view,the numbers are essentially the same,as,at some point or another,there will be no measurable thing in the universe which allows you to differentiate between the two. |
