American actor and director Philip Seymour Hoffman has died. He was 46.

The Academy Award winner was found in his Manhattan apartment at 35 Bethune St. in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan this morning morning, according to the New York Police Department, which is investigating.

The cause of death has not yet been determined.

Hoffman won the Best Actor Academy Award and the Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture -- Drama for his leading role in the 2005 film "Capote."

He was nominated for three Best Supporting Actor Oscars, for "The Master," "Doubt," and "Charlie Wilson's War."

TMZ reported that authorities found him with a needle stuck in his arm: http://www.tmz.com/

Not to be rude or anything, but I don't understand why good actors like him feel the need to do this. It's really a shame though because he was a really good actor. R.I.P sir. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

yeah, i just saw that report too.

it's fucked up to no end how many actors or people in general gotta turn to that shit and end up with shit like this happening. one 'reason' i've heard from people who coach really good actors at seminars and courses is that they spend so much time projecting their emotions on screen and at will that they don't know how to project it or handle it in daily life, so they cope with dubious amounts of drugs and alcohol so they don't have to. which is bullshit because there are so many other ways to handle yourself without sticking a needle between your toes and all that.

it's always such a waste in the end.

Such a shame really. Why it seems that celebrities need to do this is something I wont understand.

Indeed. That is kind of BS. I know directors always tell their actors to become the characters they play, but acting in general shouldn't be treated (or even seen) as some kind of brainwashing technique. Voice actors and actors who perform in big city theaters/TV shows seem to have no problem separating work from real life. If that's the case though, why not just retire from acting if it becomes too much?

The whole ''actors can't separate'' argument: first of all, method actors, who never BREAK character on set don't usually end up this way. People always bring up the Ledger card but he didn't OD on heroin or anything, it was just a mistake with sleeping pills that led to his unfortunate demise. In the end that's what they sign up for and if they can't take it to be honest pursuing another line of work is a better option.
This is still terrible news and he definitely left the world too young at 46.

He was an exceptional actor, RIP.

And btw, rich and famous people do drugs because they can, simple as that.

He was amazing. I've watched a lot of the movies he's been on and there's not a single role he didn't nail.

Sometimes famous people, just like average run-of-the-mill people, do drugs because being on drugs feels good. Doesn't necessarily have to stem from emotional problems, especially with something as powerful and addictive as heroin. Personally I've never tried heroin and would never think of trying it - but if I were to try it I could pretty much guarantee that I would love it. And then it would just be downhill from there, and that's how it happens.

That being said, I was truly shocked and saddened to hear about this today. He was a wonderful actor, one of the few that I have a lot of respect for. I wasn't aware that he was struggling with addiction, and it's never a good thing to see someone lose the fight.

Heroin is some pretty heavy shit and hard to kick even if you did want to. Unfortunately became another statistic too soon.
