I recently listened to an old podcast. This had nothing to do with Metal Gear in any way. However, the presenters were discussing punctuation and the proper names for certain punctuation marks. For example '...' is an ellipsis. What struck me was when they mentioned the name for the forward slash '/' which is known as (amongst other names) a Solidus and a backslash '\' is known as a reverse Solidus. You can see the stretch I'm making here but Hideo likes obscure links to thinks...maybe he's going to portray in/at the end of TPP a story arch relating to Solidus Snake/George Sears... who the reverse Solidus is, I'm not sure... maybe Raiden or Liquid. Maybe even Big Boss. SO, more specificly maybe these reverse and forward slashes create the 'V' '\.../' '\/' Maybe this should be in a more specific section of the forum where a post exists, like The Phantom Pain general section. If so, I'm sorry Edited by Skoots, Mar 1 2014, 06:10:27 AM.

The roman numeral V may not be a V it could be a \ and a / and when put them together you get \/...Yeah? No? Just me?...Okay then

Yeah, not sure what to say other than, while this is interesting, what would the point be? It'd be a nearly invisible hint towards people who probably aren't going to get it anyway. Besides, I think the V was just done so people would think that Phantom Pain was a Vita game since they wanted to troll people into thinking it wasn't MGS related...which we all knew it was anyway. |

Hmmm I don't know. It could very well be the case. The V of course stands for "5" and maybe other things. Victory... I dunno, I just can't see Big Boss "winning" anything during MGS5. It seems more like a story of loss. The name itself says "the phantom pain". Loss is a huge theme in MGS5, so the "V" can't really stand for victory IMO, at least not in the game itself. Maybe it's a symbol for KojiPro and their "victory" to make japanese games the best again (something like that was said by Kojima and the guy(s) at Platinum). I think it's 100% plausible that the V has, among other meanings, the meaning of cloning/mirroring, and maybe it stands for Solidus, who knows. It would make sense if there really is a doppelganger. Well we know who the doppelganger would be... Solidus. Great catch, Skoots. Even if it turns out to be irrelevant information to MGS, I have still learned something new.

Kojima stated that in terms of the actual game, it made the switch to V because this is heading into a new direction with a new actor, new ways to tel the story, etc. Not sure what his exact words were but I think he mentioned this in an early video interview with Geoff Keighley. |

Yeah, I remember it was along the lines of bringing back Japanese video game development to the forefront of the industry and that The Phantom Pain is going to a be a victory in doing so.

I didn't mean this interview specifically, but that and the "documentary" about Rising, where he Kojima san sat down with one of Platinum's leads and talked about how a game "made in Japan" meant highest quality many years ago, and that they want to bring back those times where "made in Japan" means "high quality games" or even "the best games". That interview with Geoff Keighley, IIRC, was the very first interview with Hideo Kojima after the whole Rising thing. So he still had that on his mind, and I think that IF it stands for victory, it's Kojima's, KojimaProductions' and Konami's victory, and of course the victory of the brand "Metal Gear". I can't see Big Boss being victorious at the end of MGS5. I mean I can't know for sure, but I believe there's a reason they created a certain picture of the game with the trailers. I see Big Boss either having lost all and being very bitter about it all, or, the most likely thing, Big Boss feeling burnt out, feeling completely empty. He doesn't really care anymore what's gonna happen and he just does what he wants to do. He goes all in because it doesn't matter anymore to him if there are any consequences for either him or anyone else. I think it would be foolish to think we already know the full meaning of "V". Remember "V has come to". I don't think they call him "V" because of "Vic Boss". That was just the costa rican rebels shouting because they "won". I don't think Amanda's rebel army will play a part in TPP. I mean it IS kinda strange \ and / are called a backwards Solidus and a Solidus. That's no coincidence. Absolutely not. \/ is the V. Who is "backwards Solidus"? Of course the mirror image of Solidus, Big Boss. I'm sure it makes even more sense in japanese. ![]() Maybe we're onto nothing here, but I have a feeling Solidus will play a part in MGS5. I mean he has to, since the game takes place in 84 and possibly later, and Raiden already fought in Solidus' army during the 80's. I suspect they didn't mean the year 89 and that year only, but a few years of civil war. Wouldn't it be perfectly logical to have him in the game? Wouldn't it be awesome to have a second Snake in the game who happens to look exactly the same? That would be awesome. In MGS4, BB and Solid looked not very much alike. But Solidus could grow a mullet/ponytail, put on an eyepatch and even get his arm amputated. I don't remember if we ever saw Solidus' naked left hand/arm during MGS2. I think he was covered by his (weird and a little bit silly looking) "suit" 100% of the time he was on screen, and I think he wore gloves. Hmmm whatever. I better not stir up the whole doppelganger thing again.

Solidus is 12...he won't even be the same person as he was in 2. And I don't see him forming his views at that age. And I really don't like the idea of Solidus, Raiden and Big Boss somehow crossing paths...unless it is literally that, that Big Boss just happens to pass a group of child soldiers and Solidus is the leader

We had no idea that Raiden was even in MGS 2. A character that had the gross share of the game as the main protagonist. For all we know MGSV could suddenly go forward in time to when Solidus is older and leading a child soldier program... ![]() As I said, it was just a thought I had. All be it, a thought during the latter hours of a 12 hour night shift. I realise now it is kinda straw clutching at its finest. Saying that, you never know!
