In the red band trailer when Snake is shooting at the child soldiers it shows he has his mechanical hand on the left, while in TPP demo it shows his right arm being the one missing. Is there some unknown reason for this or could this lend credence to the multiple Snakes theory?

You're watching an unofficial version of the TPP demo. The uploader mirrored the footage to avoid copyright trouble. All official footage shows Snake with his left arm missing.

What this guy said, hell not too long ago someone made a topic about the same thing and kept preaching how the mirrored trailer was legit when it wasn't even on any official Konami/KojiPro youtubes because he kept wanting to say that you don't play as the real Big Boss in the game.

It's not confirmed that he is shooting the children. It appears to be the same room but my gut tells me he isn't shooting them.

Wait...what? If the whole video was mirrored then how didn't you realize this when you saw the "men become demons" text, etc.?

He's talking about the GDC gameplay footage, not the E3 trailer.

Hell, even with the body double theory, why would the replacement Snake have a mechanical arm? like, isn't that just kind of counter productive? did they just tell him ''hey cut your arm for no reason and replace it!''

There is precedent for this happening in a fairly well-received movie, but I hesitate to mention it for risk of ruining the plot.

Yeah and the Metal Gear series isn't known for inexplicably hacking off limbs of protagonists for the sake bizarre plot points.

The world would be better without Snakes.
He isn't shooting children. Big Boss wasn't a child killer. He merely recruited children to train for battle. We don't know if he necessarily sent them into battle as children or waited until he had trained them for years and sent them in as adults. But judging from the sprite designs in MG1 and 2 they appear to be adult soldiers. Machine Gun KID may be the only child though. I could be wrong but eh. MG1 and 2's soldiers lack the detail to determine something like that though.

Now you're just far reaching to defend Big Boss. That feed them send them back to the battlefield quote alone disproves any point people might make about ''BUT HE DID GOOD!''

1980's era 2D sprites are nothing to go by, lets say Machinegun Kid was a child soldier, his sprite is the same size as Solid Snakes is, so no, you cannot say that there were no child soldiers there based off of that a lone.

Also, are you working on the game or are you directing it alongside Kojima? No? Then stop saying "He isn't shooting the children, Big Boss wasn't a child killer." when you could very well be completely wrong, Big Boss could be shooting the kids in the cage. And no, it wouldn't be out of character because it's not for us to decide what is and isn't something Big Boss or Solid Snake would do, that's up to the people making the game.

Therefor it is entirely possible for Big Boss to gun down child soldiers and make them drop like flies.

Chances are he is shooting the cage on the lock to free them.

Video game logic would say that shooting the lock off would only take one shot, he shoots a hell of a lot more than one round, meaning he's not shooting at the lock.

That and he's got lockpicks and can pick locks reasonably quickly, he doesn't need to shoot the locks off.

Really...some people are going to some real great lengths to find an excuse for Big Boss to not be shooting at them, when he very well could be.

Personally, I don't think he's shooting the children either. I think it's merely Kojima piecing a following scene for shock value. But that's my personal opinion based on conjecture. Korn is right: you can't claim it's out of character, or can you write it off as shooting a lock with several billets.
