PTSD The theme?; Unravelling the clues so far

Hi. So, we already know that TPP and GZ are much darker entries in the series, and Kojima has said that the game will deal with darker themes like revenge etc.

My theory is that the main theme of the game will be PTSD and the traumatising effects that war has on people. This theory is based mainly on only a few things:

1. Ishmail having Kiefer's voice. I think, like many other people, that bandage-face is just a figment of BB's imagination, that helps spurs him on and helps him break free. Notice that in the trailer, BB is driving the ambulance that crashes. Given the choice, why would you let the freshly de-coma'd bloke with one arm do the driving?

2. 'Those who don't exist'. Clue's in the name here, but I think the game's bosses will be non-existent - personal 'demons' that BB has to battle. As has been discussed, Volgin will be one of them, but he won't actually be *real* as such, more metaphorical. This would allow Kojima to squeeze in his usual crazy, super-powered bosses and still keep the more real, gritty tone of the game. We already know BB is seeing crazy shit like fire unicorns and sand whales.

3. We've already got a heavy focus on things like Guantanamo (mentioned at the end of GZ), child soldiers and losing friends (Kaz's speec in the trailer). And the name of the game itself, 'Phantom Pain' suggests we're dealing with threats that aren't really there.

I'm stumped when it comes to the main plot of the game and I'm happy to stay that way until I play it, but I think the overarching theme will almost certainly be looking at the effects of war, with a big emphasis on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

What do you guys think?

I agree. PTSD will be a major focus of the game and i like it. I really don't want those other crazy theories to happen.

A straight forward story can be epic aswell, if told right

I totally agree that we could see an mgs4-like internal conflict with BB where old snake had to deal with his accelerated aging but now BB has to deal with his mental scarring that is giving him these huge hallucinations. I also think the psycomantis child has a hand in that too but I hope this is true cause that would be a thrilling and scary side story

I'm commenting on your first point; I believe Ishmael is driving in that scene. They're also in London and wheels are on the right ;)

I think that's very likely. The title itself seems to be a very good clue. And I think it's the best platform to explore the reasons for BB's descent to evil and also for all the crazy shit happening in the trailers.

Also, Dank Snake, your sig picture is the greatest thing I've ever seen

Another clue can be in the end of GZ. You notice that BB looks like he's about to cry when Miller is screaming after the attack. He's completely broken up about the incident.

I think you have something here, but do we really want to fight past bosses? I hope Kojima gives us
new villains too.

I think also with the PTSD, Big Boss might be suffering a bit or full on amnesia. Ishmael is his supporting conscious, he doesn't know who he is, because he doesn't know himself so he's trying to mentally relate to something/someone outside of his body he just freshly woke up in a coma from.

Something that eludes to this further is when Ocelot is speaking to Big Boss prior to the Kaz rescue mission. He is telling him things BB should already know. "The whole world wants you dead", "You're a Legend in the eyes of those who live on the battlefield" "You're going to have to rebuild that army of yours, it's how Kaz would have wanted it"...

This further drives the theory home that Ishmael is just a figment of BB's imagination.

Some of those lines of Ocelot's can be misinterpreted though. Boss could easily be unaware that he's wanted since his coma is immediately after the MSF attack. Also, him being a legend was more of a statement of confidence if anything. "If anyone can do it, it's the legendary Boss!"

Wouldn't Big Boss understand that he's become a target after the false UN Inspection? I mean... they WERE played like a damn fiddle after all. ;)

The weird thing is that even Ishmael says "the world wants you dead". So confusing. So if he's a hallucination, then perhaps even Snake thinks that the world's hunting him.

Big Boss had an understanding already that the world would be going after him/MSF at the end of Peace Walker, plus I'm sure he is plagued with nightmares about what happened in GZs while in a coma. I remember having a nightmare as a kid that literally 'everyone in the world' was out to kill me, and the shit that provoked such a nightmare wasn't anything remotely close to what Big Boss has been through.

And BB/the Snakes are always spoken to as if they were stupid, and that is really just the game speaking directly to the player - so I wouldn't look in to Ocelots words as evidence he has amnesia. He may well be suffering from memory loss, it would make sense and work well with everything else going on with him, but Ocelot's words are not reason to suspect it.

He has a giant shrapnel/bone lodged in his head for Christs sake lol, yeah he probably has some memory loss
I would think. I wouldn't say he has full on amnesia though. If that were the case, we would forget his
abilities, like a pianist forgetting the keys on a piano.

Thank you. I'm uploading another gameplay video tomorrow and then I'm going to start working on making another theory/analysis video. Ideally it will be out a week before E3 but I have no idea. I don't believe in half assing youtube videos regardless of the subject matter so I intend on sitting down and reviewing everything we know and at least somewhat rigorously sifting through the theories worth discussing. Also believe in trying to keep it entertaining throughout which is why I always do the comparisons to other works of fiction. Ground Zeroes didn't really inspire some new magnum opus of a theory for me (there was nothing all that surprising), but its not like there is a shortage of things to say either.
