Ive never read it but I just read a synopsis and it opens up some fascinating interpretations. I did notice there is an Elijah (Eli) in the story as well; he seems to run his mouth and talk a lot of crap about Ahab.

I wonder if Eli will run his mouth a lot in this game, until Snake shuts him up.

It wouldn't be Joffrey Liquid if he didn't.

I Am The Hype

TBH, i'm really convinced that ishmael is the medic. Eli is definitely liquid. Who's quiet? Who's code talker? Who are the ones who don't exist? Is chico dead or not? Who's skullface? What, who, where and how?

I really don't wanna know. The only question is: WHEN? GOD DAMMIT WHEN?

It would be cool if Ishmal was actually a created character by you!
A little far fetched but it would be pretty cool.

Snake would slap him multiple times like Tyrion did.

Ive never read it but I just read a synopsis and it opens up some fascinating interpretations. I did notice there is an Elijah (Eli) in the story as well; he seems to run his mouth and talk a lot of crap about Ahab.
On that point I just came across a very interesting blog post which examines the relationship between the biblical king Ahab and the prophet Elijah, and then juxtaposes that with the relationship between their Moby-Dick namesakes.

http://pitt-crit-reading.blogspot.ie/2011/04/prophet-elijah.html

"In the bible, Elijah and Ahab come into frequent (yet discrete) conflict. Ahab is the most evil of the kings of Israel, guided by greed and deceit (such as in his pursuit of the greatest vineyard after acquiring another through murder). In the bible, Elijah sends his prophecy of the fate of Ahab, whose “blood will be drunk by the same dogs who drank the blood of Naboth”"

Elijah seems to be a seldom seen but important character in Moby-Dick, with an almost foreboding presence. He ultimately mirrors the role of his biblical equivalent, predicting Ahab's failure with subtle prophecies of doom.

Just as the biblical Ahab is a king, captain Ahab is the king of his ship, much like Big Boss is the king of MSF, Diamond Dogs and Outer Heaven. Ahab commands fierce loyalty among his "troops". Elijah, in contrast, makes Ahabs troops question their faith in their king, he is intelligent and knowledgeable when it comes to Ahab, this is an excerpt from the book where Elijah talks about Ahab:

“But you must jump when he gives an order. Step and growl; growl and go—that's the word with Captain Ahab. But nothing about that thing that happened to him off Cape Horn, long ago, when he lay like dead for three days and nights; nothing about that deadly skrimmage with the Spaniard afore the altar in Santa?—heard nothing about that, eh? Nothing about the silver calabash he spat into? And nothing about his losing his leg last voyage, according to the prophecy. Didn't ye hear a word about them matters and something more, eh? No, I don't think ye did”

If Eli is anything like his biblical or Moby-Dick counterpart, I imagine an intelligent (perhaps arrogant) brat who questions the methods of Big Boss, perhaps points out his flaws, and most importantly predicts his failure.

Return to topic, i think even skullface will have a thurst for revenge of some kind. Also, don't expect it to be a copy paste story. Just some symbols like ishmael, ahab, the whale and the theme of revenge.
Oh yea, it won't be a copy and paste story for sure. We already know that the revenge bit extends far beyond Big Boss to several other characters, unlike MD, where only Ahab really desires revenge aboard the Pequod.

Christopher Nolan's Inception was largely a riff on Theseus and the Minotaur, with Marion Cottilard as the Minotaur. I have a feeling MGSV will use a bit more of MD, but will of course be its own story.

Revenge isn't the only theme common to the two. Race (another major MD theme) has also been confirmed by Kojima, which to my mind leaves the third major MD theme, perception, highly likely to feature in MGSV.

We already have a type of Ahab, Ishmael and Elijah in the game.

Kojima's reaction and response to the interview question, along with everything we've seen and heard already suggests to me that there will be as Kojima put it himself "a lot of that (references/connections to Moby-Dick) in the game.

I suspect that a few character archetypes could be largely similar between the two stories.

Big Boss will be hunting the white whale who stole his arm and his home. Just as revenge obsessed Ahab was pulled down into the depths of the ocean by his prey, Big Boss will be pulled down on his quest for vengeance to the level of his nemesis and his transition from a hero to a villain will be complete. You think all the crying about Skullface's torture rape is bad, just wait for the uproar surrounding what Big Boss and friends do to fight back.

Holy shit guys. I know I'm not adding anything to the conversation here but seriously Moby Dick is an absolutely amazing book. Reading a synopsis or combing wiki articles and watching abysmal movies is a waste of time.

The reason Kojima is using Moby Dick as a reference is because at its core it's a simple story about the nature of man and vengeance. This game is about how Big Boss' drive to make the world he wants and his need for REVENGE, the theme of the game according to Miller in the trailer, makes him into the monster he sought to destroy. Ahab lost a leg, BB lost an arm. I wouldn't look much deeper into it honestly.

As much as I love Kojima's video games, his attempts at piggybacking on the works of philosophers, authors, and directors is somewhat embarrassing. He writes B movie scripts. There's no way around that. I love them for what they are but a ground breaking artist he is not. In my opinion at least.

TL;DR: Read the goddamn book!

Yeah the movie or a T.V. show are always an abomination in comparison to the book. I figured it would be nothing like the book, seeing as it was a fairly short movie..I know reading the book is going to be way different
