There's just 4 item slots, the phantom cigar won't take an entire slot just for "skipping time", I'm sure the fast-forward feature is triggered somewhere else. Otherwise it would be annoying having to include the Cigar in your limited inventory just to be able to skip time.

Why not?? I'm not sure on what kind of equipment we have in TPP but that's a good one.
if you don't include it in your inventory then you can't skip time and you'd have to infiltrate the base on the current conditions with the help of other item like the magical cardboard box :P

As for how to trigger it, simply equip it and then press the action bottom to avoid triggering it by mistake.
Plus, the time skipping mechanics shown in the E3 trailer is pretty fast so if you skipped to day by mistake you can go back to night pretty easily. I wonder what happens if you were spotted while skipping time.

I'm not sure but it seems that there aren't as much equipment as the previous games. There is no need for rations, only the first aid spray which doesn't occupy an equipment spot. Binocular doesn't occupy a spot also and neither the fulton recovery!!

Yeah, I agree with you. Skipping time is more likely to happen from iDroid / data terminal when in safe location. I don't want to limit the items just to have ability to skip time - that cigar must have other functions.

Trust me, that would still happen since sometimes in hurry (firefight), you might accidentally switch it when you are supposed to change to primary weapon and reload it. Too many situations in GZ where I threw grenade, switched on NVGs and changed to primary weapon at the same time and attempted reload it, ending up sitting behind cover with NVGs on with grenade ready.

And sometimes it doesn't switch the correct weapon fast enough, so there's too much of risk to equipping and using it by accident.

I don't get it! So Snake smokes a cigar and the time passes? So you can choose between daylight and nightime before you start the mission?

Yep. Night has the benefit of less guards (probably), better cover. Day has more guards and your easier to see but you'd have much better visibility.
Trade off, make your choice soldier! Lol

I think it's opposite - night has more guards with bad visibility to keep the place secured where as day had less guards but they see better. Just compare day/night missions in GZ and you see the difference that night missions with more guards are easier for infiltration compared to day with less guards due to fact they can spot you more easily even with smaller numbers.

LOL never happened to me but you have a point.
However, by the action button I meant tingle if you are on PS4 not the reload button. Still you might keep it equipped by mistake and then mashing tingle to jump over a fence you'd trigger it.

We'll see, I think they might show all these feature in the 30 min E3 presentation so we'll hopefully hear about it.

I think all the fuzz for the Phantom Cigar came from the trailer that we see snake puffing it and a seiko watch fast passing time, while the background weather equally elapses. Now, after the gameplay trailer, its the first time we actually see it as an equipable item, but not the first time in MGS series.Cigarettes were used to uncover traps (mgs1) or even heal wounds (cigar mgs3).The trailer must not dictate the usage of the cigar just for passing time as,in my opinion, its just for animation purposes.Other than uncovering traps or such, the real usage of the phantom cigar is yet to be seen.

If big boss was just reading a magazine instead of smoking then people would have tied that to skipping time aswell.
Most likely you will be able to use the cigar to skip time.
Are you really expecting it to let you do it whenever though?
If your not in a secure area i doubt you will be able todo it.
Similar to red dead redemptions camp sites.
You could only do it in certain areas.
So in tpp theres no way you would "activate the time skip by mistake"
If you were spotted and getting shot at, then ofcourse snake is not going to stop, pull out the cigar and just start smoking.
Theres gonna be restrictions to it.
You can only do it in secure areas where theres less of chance of enemies to be nearby

I don't think time skipping was even confirmed as a feature? Just a theory for now.
I remember Kojima saying something about choosing your start time taking into account time having advanced when you reach your destination. What they showed in the trailer could just be a special sequence done for the trailer, I can't see a watch on his arm either.

Something I was thinking about was the item menu which has 4 slots, and you always have one of them equipped and just cycle through them. I'm thinking if it let you assign 4 different cardboard boxes, it would mean you could never leave your cardboard box! So if that's true there must be limits to different classes of items that you are allowed at once to avoid situations like that, I think Peace Walker did something similar.
What I'm getting at is one of the slots could be limited to stat boost items, like cigar, bandana or body armor, which guarantees you've got a slot that gives you normal gameplay control over Snake.

What's the point of this? So i'm in the middle of the mission (daylight) and then i'm thinking wait, i pull the cigar out and I'm in the same mission at night?
What's the benefit of this feature?
