Only me

You can sympathize with Big Boss but you can't justify his actions. That's how I wanted to be. You can sympathize with the man who was kicked while down and then finally just lost it all and went on a destructive warpath till he lost all reasoning and all he tried to achieve and stand for, but under no circumstance should you go ''YEAH THAT'S THE RIGHT THING TO DO!''

Maybe Big Boss has a Dissociative identity disorder and Punished and Venom are his alter egos.

If you look at last year's trailer (where he's called Punished) he seems to be a very sympathetic character whereas in this years trailer (after which he was labelled Venom) he comes accross as a complete psychopath. Maybe that's what the whole Ishmael thing was alluding to i.e. the callous Ishmael leading the broken Snake through the nightmares of his past.

He certainly seems to be heading that direction if he is to turn into a psycho in this game. That last line is sympathetic...Maybe it is early on in the game since they seem to be discarding the ashes of what looks to be those who fell at Mother Base

He mentioned something interesting... Konami, they claim that what they're doing in Casinos are the missing piece... money, to surpass video games.

Punished Snake just didn't even flow right....Venom Snake definitely has more of a ring to it. But, I'm almost 90% sure they only keep the Snake codename around since that's what the franchise is known for.

I think it's a gradual change throughout the game. He'll reach a point (likely that war scene) where he fed up of his pain and decides to take things far to appease it, then he'll be Venom Snake. He'll gradually transform to the villain he becomes throughout the game. Like phases.

So what the hell is going on here. Is he Naked Snake? Big Boss? Punished Snake? Venom Snake?
I was under the impression Venom Snake was the fifth Snake. What with the V has come to lark.

I think it will be early enough in the game but I doubt they are the ashes of those who fell at motherbase, most likely they are Diamond Dogs soldiers who died in battle during Big Boss's coma or just prior to his arrival in Afghanistan. The line is quite sympathetic but him rubbing the ashes on his face and suggesting that they make diamonds out of them is pretty damn crazy. This will likely be when we start to see his sanity waning.

Actually, I just had a thought - does the V in the title stand for Venom? Also explains why someone at the end of last year's trailer said that "...V has come to".

Well, we now know that "V" does not only stand for "Victory" as Kojima always says, but that was always obvious.

True... All numbered MGS titles have an actual number in them, whereas TPP has a roman numeral. It's always intrigued me.

Still we carry you.

Why can't he be called Big Boss, Snake, Punished Snake, Venom Snake, Jack and John? (There are others)

I get the idea that it could refer to the missions, because the picture that has him called Venom Snake talks about the mission to rescue Kaz. Like in MGS4 we had acts with names. Here it could be "Act 1 - Venom Snake" or "Act 2 - Punished Snake".

Yeah you could be right.. maybe he's called Venom Snake just for that mission and after that he adopts the Punished Snake name.

Metal Gear Solid Venom: The Phantom Pain
'V has come to' has been in there since the Moby Dick VGA right? But last year it showed the name Punished Snake. So I'm not sure if they changed his name or what. There might be more meanings to V that we haven't learned yet.

Call me insane, but to my mind this 'Venom Snake' and the mention that his mission is to rescue Kaz is a tiny suggestion that the Afghanistan mission and the 'Venom' persona could be an extra episode that will be introduced as a further bridge between Ground Zeroes and TPP.

Think of it as a Ground Zero.Fives.

If I'm not in full tin-foil hat mode, perhaps this means that Punished Snake transforms from Venom Snake as the madness and poison sets in after rescuing Kaz and being persuaded to a life of darkness by him?

Perhaps TPP is taking a lot longer than they thought and they need to pull another GZ stunt. At this stage, i wouldn't even complain (that much).

I never caught where he would be called "Venom Snake" I only saw "Venom has risen" which I figured would be Metal Gear Venom (since MG was in the shot).
