Btw, anybody else notice how BB name was Jack, as was Raiden's. In mgs2, The S3 plan was meant to mimic shadow moses, with Solidus acting as BB and Raiden acting as snake, his distanced "son." Think Kojima did this on purpose in order to further the similarities between these relationships? Even though mgs3 came out later, i wonder if he made this decision based on the story of mgs2.

I think he is running out of ideas and use the repeating cycle excuse to justify it.

Yea I feel that. I really hope he changes this dynamic of repetition in mgsv. At this point I have a lot of hope, but also a lot of expectations because of that. Let's hope he doesn't disappoint. I don't think he will.

My theory is that Punished and Venom are two different snakes, or at least a good/evil persona for Big Boss. Maybe he has a split personality disorder from all the trauma he's endured or something. I don't think they would just ditch the Punished Snake moniker after playing it up as the new Big Boss. Those probably just representations of his good (broken and defeated) and evil (pissed and looking for revenge) side.

Im on bored with this theory it seems like it would be a great storyline within the game. I really do expect BB to have a lot of internal conflicts i this game.
I don't dislike or like this, but is quite possible.
You too have known loss, and that loss torments you still. You hope hatred might someday replace the pain, but it never goes away.

Honestly all the monikers/different names he has is ridiculous. How many do you need?

He'll wake up one mourning in Outer Heaven with a bug in his stomach, and he will roll over to Ocelot who is lying right beside him and say 'call me constipated Snake'.
Oh god that made me laugh so hard for so long...It's funnier if you actually play it out in ur mind

WTF is the fuss about? "Snake" is referred to as "Boss" in GZ so what gives?! Why wouldn't he be referred to as Boss in TPP...

He was referred to as both "snake" and "Boss" in GZ... the fuss is about the new name and yes we know it's just like "old snake"

I highly doubt he will be referred to as "Venom Snake" in dialogue. Expect "Snake", "Big Boss" and "Boss", with "Venom" being some kind of title that was given to him while he was in a coma (presumably).

I love Arachnid's idea. What if Snake has multiple personality disorder?

I don't understand why Kojima is being so hesitant to just commit Naked Snake to the title of Big Boss. So, I guess we have to wait until NAKED, PUNISHED, VENOM or what ever Snake name he's going by now heads up FoxHound before he settles on the name BB. That's just great.
To appeal to the retarded gamers who can't tell he isn't Solid Snake.
Or perhaps, Snake doesn't really like going by Big Boss anymore because he hates his mother land and those who puppeteer it, as well as gave him the code name. He probably doesn't start actually using it again until he joins FOXHOUND as its commander.

I am almost certain the name is simply just meant to be symbolic of his change in character. He's a Snake that's been messed with for far too long, and he's going to bite back now. Hard. With a fuck ton of VENOM.

Thing is, Ocelot was actually referred to as Shalashaska by real people. Snake won't be called Venom Snake by any characters.
False. He was already called "V" by a female character. Kojima confirmed that he was referring to "Venom Snake" when that female says "V has come to"
I always thought the "V" was for Vic Boss, a name he actually gets called.
Retconed into Venom Snake by Kojima himself via twiter
He didn't retcon anything. He never said the V stood for Vic Boss, I did ;)

Well, I think it's because of jammy luck :D He called Raiden Jack because that's what Leonardo Dicaprio character was called in Titanic, and Jack also happens to be a nickname for John. It wouldn't surprise me if he chose John just to called him Jack :D

Because of the love story between Rose and Jack from The Titanic. Rose was Raiden's girlfriend in MGS2.

I see. Thanks :)

I can't see Venom Snake being a codename used by his comrades just like I didn't think Punished Snake would be used by anyone in the game. Perhaps Venom Snake is said by characters in the game though. Maybe his acts of revenge or evil spread from battlefield to battlefield, soldier to soldier. Maybe it is a rumor that nobody believes at first but soon they realise it is all true. Maybe new characters he comes by call him Venom Snake and he dislikes it. They whisper it as he passes by. It has just enough Japanese corniness to be believable.

People need to understand this: Big Boss is his new codename, but Snake remains his old codename.

Fixed that for you, because John/Jack was his name.

Only difference now is that Snake became his real name instead of John (not literally, but I think you know what I mean).

That's a real poor excuse of not calling him by his appointed codename. Like I said, this is just to appeal to people too stupid to know his codename and just go by generic "Snake".

The executive function of the frontal lobes involve the ability to recognize future consequences resulting from current actions, to choose between good and bad actions (or better and best), override and suppress socially unacceptable responses, and determine similarities and differences between things or events.

Interesting.

Yeah that devil and angel on the shoulders thing is quite popular in animation. Not sure if most here know but its actually based on Sigmund Freud's structural model of the psyche.

Also I suggested the split personality thing before. I think its a definite possibility but part of me also thinks that Venom is just a codename used during the Kaz rescue mission.

I think looking at the Konami posters tells you everything.

At the bottom of each poster is the character's codename (Snake and Ocelot). On the side of each poster, however, is the nickname that enemies will give to each character (Venom and Shalashaska). Focusing on Snake for a second, this means that he won't be called Venom Snake (just like Ocelot isn't called Shalashaska Ocelot), but simply Venom. Obviously this is just a theory, but it kind of fits.
