"Nuclear" Is there a meaning behind the song?

Hey just wanted to ask do you think the new song featured in the MGS E3 2014 could have some kinda of meaning? Lyrically what could it mean how does it tie in with series? After all Kojima edits the trailers himself so there must be a reason for him picking this?

Lyrics:

Standing on the edge of the crater
Like the prophets once said
and the ashes are all cold now
No more bullets and the embers are dead
Whispers in the air tell the tales
Of the brothers gone
Desolation, devastation
What a mess we made, when it all went wrong

Watching from the edge of the circus
For the games to begin
Gladiators draw their swords
form their ranks for Armageddon

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoned child

Standing on the edge of the underworld
Looking at the abyss
and I'm hoping for some miracle
To breakout to escape from all this
Whispers in the air tell the tales
of a life that's gone
Desolation, devastation
What a mess we made, when it all went wrong

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoned child

I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoned child

I was thinking maybe the abandoning child line is referring to The Boss abandoning Big Boss?

Vanilla Coke is better. I'm the shite one.

It definitely does have meaning. It's Mike Oldfield. There probably is a reason for hi mpicking this song for the trailer. A lot of the lyrics describe Big Boss's character or attitude.

Yeah thats true and what i was thinking.

Standing on the edge of the crater
Like the prophets once said
and the ashes are all cold now
No more bullets and the embers are dead
Whispers in the air tell the tales
Of the brothers gone
Desolation, devastation
What a mess we made, when it all went wrong

I think that this bit here of the song is about those lost in Ground Zeroes when Mother Base was destroyed and everything? "Whispers tell the tales of the brothers gone." He lost his brothers in the attack.

"What a miss we made"

This typo irks me every time. Someone please fix this if you're going to post the lyrics. Also, "The abandoning child", it's "abandoned"

I just copied and pasted the lyrics from another site. I thought it looked odd but wasn't sure.

Just think of Big Boss as an unstable nuke waiting to go off at any time. It is dangerous to be around, will do massive indiscriminate damage when it goes off and will have devastating after effects.

Oh I like the sound of that but just like a bomb he will self- implode causing more destruction and harm to himself than those around him?

It think in the song it does refer more to the destruction of others but a nuke does destroys itself in the explosion ;) (not being cheeky)

I think this part describes what happened in ground zeroes:
Standing on the edge of the crater >>>>>>> A crater created by the bombs of war
Like the prophets once said
and the ashes are all cold now >>>>>>>>> The ashes of our fallen comrades are cold (which suggest that is has been a while since they have died)
No more bullets and the embers are dead >>> the traces of the war is vanishing
Whispers in the air tell the tales >>>>>>>>> the winds is still telling the stories
Of the brothers gone >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> of the fallen comrades

Desolation, devastation >>>>>>> This is what happened and what will happen because of wars
What a mess we made, when it all went wrong>>> A small misunderstanding between Cipher and BB caused a huge mess that lasted till MGS4

Then this part describes the current state of Diamond Dogs and that they are getting ready for the final fight at the end of the world:
Watching from the edge of the circus
For the games to begin
Gladiators draw their swords
form their ranks for Armageddon

Then it states how Kaz and BB feels like a nuclear bomb that is about to explode with their broken hearts the lost all innocence:
I'm nuclear
I'm wild
I'm breaking up inside
A heart of broken glass
Defiled
Deep inside
The abandoned child

Now that they are stuck in the revenge cycle:
Standing on the edge of the underworld >>>>> They've reached hell because of what they did for revenge
Looking at the abyss
and I'm hoping for some miracle
To breakout to escape from all this
The last three lines are self explanatory; although they want to stop this war but they can't, cause wars need a miracle to stop them once they've started.

Whispers in the air tell the tales
of a life that's gone >>>>>>>>>>> The life that they have wasted in their quest of revenge.

This is just my personal explanation based on the game not the original author's idea cause I heard it about his father's (or grandfather) mental state after WW1. That is what IGN said but not sure about that :P

Yes kojima said on Twitter that he bought mike old fields album and heard that song and got the idea to make the trailer... As far as what clues the lyrics leave it's interesting. I feel the abandoned child lyric could refer to multiple characters Huey and otacon, and I just thought of this. Maybe big boss treats solid and liquid the way he does because of his abandonment by the boss...

Great analysis. I think the chorus goes back to the Mark Twain quote at the beginning of the trailer. Big Boss is so full of rage and hatred that he is ready explode, harming himself and others. So many dying just to fight his war against Zero.

A psychological influence that might not be explored by the game. His clones are not something he gave consent for and are a symbol of Zeroes betrayal and deception. I still think it is very sad how Big Boss didn't consider them his sons and wanted nothing to do with them and bullied Liquid. If I was Big Boss and found out I had two clones after knowing I was infertile and could never have children, I would go up to them and give them a big hug each. They would be my sons and I would love them dearly

Even though this is painfully obvious, I never took time to consider this. Man, Big Boss is a dick.

It's to show Big Boss losing his mind.
I don't think you have to be crazy to not be very fatherly, I think it's more of a grudge/dispute kind of thing between zero and big boss. We also don't know anything about who big boss parents are but the relationship between BB and clones is similar to boss/ big boss...

Maybe kaz finds out about xof being the attackers through his affiliation with zero, skull face tries to get to cypher by an alliance through big boss, kaz informs big boss of what sf/xof did and that's how big boss rejoins foxhound but once big boss is informed that kaz is training solid snake and that they are his clones without his consent, he has his own plans and creates outer heaven.

Also I made a note of how outer heavens logo has a skull on it. Not sure if that has anything to do with skull face or not.

MSF has a skull in the logo before Skullface had anything to do with them.

Same, i really do think it is fantastic, I genuinely have enjoyed all 3 MGS5 tracks assigned to the trailers so far.

The songs meaning is very reminiscent of Big Boss state of mind, it is clear this is the game we're all been waiting for since MGS3 - Where Big Boss will turn bad, not due to just a state of political perspective, Big Boss will suffer and become so fragile and I just cannot wait to see what happens.

And yes you could also take into the fact that BB is infertile due to the blast at the Virtuous Mission, but I think the bigger statement is on BB's mental state.

It'll show how BB's grudge with Zero is destroying not only himself but his comrades.
