Came across this today while looking up some information on the structure of the CIA . What do you think mgsf, could this possibly factor into the plot of MGSV and the earlier titles like MG1 and MG2 ? "Covert Action authorities come from the National Security Act of 1947.[10] President Ronald Reagan issued Executive Order 12333 titled "United States Intelligence Activities" in 1984. This order defined covert action as both political and military activities that the US Government could legally deny and granted them exclusively to the CIA." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organizational_structure_of_the_Central_Intelligence_Agency One more thing: "The Special Activities Division (SAD) is a division of the Central Intelligence Agency's National Clandestine Service, responsible for covert action paramilitary operations, the collection of intelligence in hostile and/or denied areas and all high threat military and/or intelligence operations when the US government does not wish to be overtly associated with such activities...." "....These Paramilitary Operations Officers were the spearhead of the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq." Could there be any relevance to this ? I'm thinking Miller, BB, Shalashaska, and/or Huey could be doing some informant work. Since BB is head of a CIA unit, Foxhound, he had to become "good" enough to be aloud back in the United States at some point by the time of MG1 ! |

such an amazing discussion, I'm enthralled... You could be on to something Iondinio, but I think the COMING 1984 is just generally trolling some sort of release date, or the next trailer to reveal the release date. i.e. Tokyo Game Show is 18/9/14. |

Anyone with any relevant knowledge of something this sensitive would be under strict NDA. Though, that is a great theory. |

No, Kojima's use of 1984 is much more than that, it's a reference to George Orwell's book 1984. 1984 is all about clandestine activities, spying, surveillance, manipulation, information control, thought control, using war as a tool, etc. Kojima always gets deep into these topics, they are the focal point of the MGS series, so I think the OP may be onto something here. I'm almost 100% sure that 1984 isn't a reference to the release date of any version of 1984 and that any of the 1984 release dates will not end up being the release date of TPP. |

when they are talking about the CIA and Afghanistan, they are referring to what the CIA did prior to the arrival the main force in 2001. Of course the CIA did have their role in Afghanistan during the Soviet's time there, with Operation Cyclone. As far as we know BB is not doing anything that would make him disavowed by America, in fact he is still considered an American hero, at least by people in the know, so he doesn't necessarily have to do anything to be allowed to return. And fucking shit up in Afghanistan and fighting dirty wars in Africa are all things the CIA were doing at the time so its not like Big Boss is acting contrary to what the American Intelligence community wants. If Big Boss does in fact go crazy and become the brutal warlord he is by MG1, all he would be doing is building up his resume to work in American covert activities. I have seen Kojima Tweet about watching the 1984 film a few times but I haven't seen him say he has actually read the book. Has he claimed to have read the book at any point? |
