It's not like he's emptying his clip on it or anything. Besides, we don't really know the type of lock on the door to begin with. Just doing some guesswork.

Maybe he is killing those kids. Maybe were just viewing the scene from an alternate angle for the sake of censorship. Remember the GDC trailer had alternate cinematography of MSF's downfall.

Or maybe he's just scaring them by shooting bullets above their heads...because he's aiming pretty high.

Why would he need to do that? Think about the whole scene. A kid in a cell extends his hand out and has a diamond in it. Big Boss picks it up, inspects it, then puts it back in the kid's hand. Then, the other kids extend their hand with their diamonds.

The most logical theory is that Big Boss comes across these imprisoned kids. At this time the kids do not know who this guy is but he doesn't look immediately threatening, so they try to buy their freedom by offering diamonds to him. He looks at it, puts it back, and the other kids are like, "we have more where that came from, let us out". Big Boss raises his gun. Again, they don't know anything about Big Boss, so mix that into his quiet demeanor (as in, I don't think he tells them to lay low, he just shoots the cell open) and you have their scared look. He frees them and gains their trust, which is why the one kid wasn't hesitant to grab Big Boss' gun when Kaz hit him. They trust Big Boss, but don't know who this Kaz guy is and retaliate when he hits him...for whatever reason he does.

These kids have one immediate thing to give when they're in the cell. Diamonds. They offered what they had to Big Boss. He didn't need to kill them to get the diamonds (which he why he gives the diamond back) and he certainly doesn't kill them for no reason. I bet in the game it'll do the same thing, like when Big Boss put Chico to sleep. It's not like he told Chico (and the player) he was going to do that. The scene is deliberately made for you to watch and think "is he gonna kill him?...oh no, he just put him to sleep. Yeah, Chico don't fight it". Same thing here. Big Boss will raise his gun like he's going to kill them, the player will be like "he's gonna kill them?" then, in the last second it'll be revealed he saves them. Kojima wants you to feel like Big Boss is going to snap at any moment. However, Big Boss was never a murderer for no reason. He's just on the edge of madness.

The fact that we have to ask if Big Boss is actually going to kill those kids means (imo) Kojima is doing it right so far.

You have a very good explanation kelesishiro. You could be correct

I doubt Big Boss is actually killing those kids. And from the looks of things, that scene right after he gave back the diamond to that kid, it looks like it takes place elsewhere. Either he's shooting at guards that are on a higher floor. Or it maybe the beginning of a boss battle.
Spoiler: click to toggle

We'll make cocaine from their ashes.

It could take place elsewhere or after he fired the shots even. Can't wait to see what actually happens!
