I don't understand how we can use other characters to complete missions crucial to the storyline, I don't like the sound of it. Am I just being negative?

Demo was fantastic otherwise.

I don't think we'll be able to use other characters to complete missions crucial to the storyline. This option is most likely for free roam, side ops, and to replay missions you've already completed. To progress the main story, I expect to play as Big Boss only.

i remember their being a preview that talked about a distinction within the Main Ops

Main Missions and "Critical Objective" Main Missions

the preview mentioned that you can play as DD soldiers in Main Missions, but i assume the critical objective missions (the missions that feature cutscenes, move the story foward) will be BB only

Yeah I think the character select option may be because he chose Free Roam first. If it was another character they may have just been able to roam and tackle side ops.

If anything main missions like these don't need Snake specifically... though I'm sure there will be plenty of others that do. The trailer (even with it's "faces don't matter" angle) shows us how much story there is.

yeah i assume their will be many missions that are big boss only

I'm going to go ahead and assume that you can assign soldiers from your Combat Unit to slots in your buddy list. That might explain the unseen buddies in the list.

This probably won't have been shown in the demo but I want to know if DD recruits can die permanently, or do you just start again at the last checkpoint as normal if you die as them.

I was wondering if knowing everything in Metal Gear has driven you mad. But now I'm seeing the green markers slightly blending into the sky.

For a short time period, and against unprepared forces, yes. However, once the Soviet artillery and heavy troops arrive, D-Walker gets taken out pretty quickly. Also, some of the soldiers are so heavily armoured, they're immune from the gatling gun. Once an alert like that is set off, it seems like there's hell to pay, and the only way to survive is to exfiltrate.

To me, D-Walker is something to have fun with, but not to seriously tackle a mission.
