I think it wont be much more than 1984-85. It will probably have a "true" ending that unlocks after some side ops, maybe a hint at Big Boss starting Outer Heaven but I dont think we will be building it in this game.

Although I'd love to see it cover the events of Metal Gear inn some form or another, I believe that the main story will last for about a year ('84 - '85) for some reason I'm not too optimistic that it goes much further than that!

Maybe we see some of Big Boss' actions in the early 90's or the events of Metal Gear as a form of DLC

At this point, I think we can be sure that the game starts and ends in 1984, the story spanning over several years would've been something they'd have mentioned by now if that were the case, or they could do it like Portable Ops where you can get the date to go on but it doesn't keep going past a certain point.
Oh yeah Portable Ops has a time paradox or something if you keep playing too long. I doubt it's like that because it's based on re playability of individual missions this time. I think they'll fudge the date issue in this one because of the non-linearity and potential for excessive cigar smoking, and it seems like at least the more minor missions don't have a date stamp at the beginning like GZ has, but I guess some bigger ones still could.

2009, this game is a Solidus Snake simulator!

I'm gonna say early 90's, maybe 1995... Hard to say, though! I think the game will have a true ending scenario like Peace Walker!!!!

I think the early 90's. There is a lot of ground to cover in the saga especially since it's Kojimas last game.

If MGSV ends in 1995, it will surpass MGS4, for me personally, as not only the best conclusion to any series I've ever played, but quite possibly the best game in the MG series.
Not for any nation. Not for any ideology. Not for justice. Not for honor. Not for power. Not for the future. Not for love. Not for peace. ONLY FOR REVENGE.

I can't imagine it being only one year. The events of Peacewalker to Ground Zeros happened between a span of 2 years (74-75) If TPP is going to go on like a TV series, I'd hope we'd at least get 4 seasons (chapters).
Chapter 1-4 of PW only span 3 weeks. The developments of Chapter 5 take another 4 months according to GZ. It's not a span of 2 years it just happens to cross over a new year.
I meant from Big Boss meeting Zadornof, to the destruction of Motherbase, was about 2 years. Granted we don't play all of them, but it was a decent period of time for what was (cannon wise) a small part of Big Bosses career. TPP will be Big Boss establishing his army, and his decent into madness. Much more significant. So naturally I expect it to take a few years.

Meeting Paz the first time and all the action is dated as November 1974. Paz is found by fishermen in early March 1975.

The best MGS game so far is without a doubt MGS 3 Snake Eater. 4 doesnt even come close.

Snake! Snake! SNAAAAAAKE!

I think it should start and end in 1984 to 1995. Maybe the we might have a game that could lead up to the events of Outerheaven and Zandzibarland.

Don't fight it.
If it doesn't extend to '95, a nod to MG1 through a post credits thing would be cool.

yes MGS3 is the better game. but MGS4's Big Boss ending and Act 4 was amazing in terms of tying into other games and fan-service.
it's hard to think anything will surpass that. something like Solid in Outer Heaven. meeting/fighting/whatever.
Do you remember, Snake? The feel of battle? The clashing of bone and sinew?!

I keep drifting in and out of this idea but I think there's a strong possibility that the two maps end up being Outer Heaven and ZL territory. They're both in roughly the right place if you reinterpret 'South Africa' as 'Southern Africa'.
And to be pedantic, Outer Heaven being an independent country 'in South Africa' doesn't even make sense, Lesotho is surrounded by South Africa but it is not 'in' it, it's independent territory, and I'm sure an Outer Heaven style territory would object strongly to being described as part of another republic like any separatist nations do.

I'd thought Africa' was supposed to be Mozambique/Rhodesia (though South Africa, Mozambique and Rhodesia are all in about the same area). And isn't Zanzibar Land in Asia (around where Tselinoyarsk is)? Or has the wiki led me astray?

Maybe small details like the exact location can be retconed. This is what the wiki says about Zanzibar Land:

Zanzibar Land, also spelled Zanzibarland, or simply Zanzibar, was a heavily fortified state in Central Asia, located between the former Soviet Union, China, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

It's close enough to Afghanistan that you may be able to travel a bit to build it or see it being built. No clear country is given so it's left ambiguous.

You stop right fucking there and apologies Infiltrator . CIA is many things; a has been meme master, a baneposter who ran it to the ground so bad to where it stopped being funny, a complete and utter podcast tsundere but I will NOT allow you to call him a shitty Gary Stu who killed a 7 part book series. That's just mean and unfair.

Sorry if I sound angry but this was too much, even with the strike in mind.

I know the NES version isn't canon but it's described as a small nation there.

Apparently, according to the MGS4 novel (again, via the wiki) it's in Tselinoyarsk. So it's in the Soviet Union. If that is the case: I wouldn't put it past Kojima to put it in the game in some capacity, either as part of the Afghanistan map or just as it's own thing. Ala Shadow Moses.

I mean it's absurd, but I wouldn't put it past him.

I heard it ends in 1995, but I can't remember where I read that. A post credits conversation between Big Boss and Solid Snake would be nice - where Big Boss does all of the talking until the last line. Bam out of nowhere Hayter says "Kept you waiting, huh?" or "Commencing Operation Intrude N313"
That's an enemy signature...
