Alright. Sorry if these are stupid, I'm new to this game and Metal Gear Solid in general.

1. I spent 30 mins creating a character in the beginning that I've yet to see/use. How or when do I use this character?

2. When do I get to go to somewhere other than Afganistan?! Someone said I will go to Africa one day.

1. It'll make sense later on. :)

2. I'm not sure of the mission number off the top of my head. I think it's in the low/mid teens. You'll be able to tackle main and side ops in both when you unlock it.

Africa starts on episode 13. And don't worry about the avatar creation, you can use your character later on :)

Best advice right here. Play the game and be pleasantly surprised yourself, you'll reach Africa, don't worry.

I haven't beaten the game yet but I have a theory on that character creation thing. I have no idea if this is true or not. You actually decided what Ishmael looks like under the bandages not you. It was the first thing I thought about when the character creation thing came. Ishmael is in Big Boss's imagination.

Relatively new to the game (not the series) myself and ahve a question. I notice some missions I've completed are grey with a checkmark next to them. Other missions I've completed have a check mark are highlighted in white. What does this mean? Are some side missions replayable and some not? Does it mean I didn't do all the extras for that mission?

Some side missions are not replayable ever again. Really sucks, too.

Anyway, the white highlighted missions are available contract missions. For anti-farming reasons, the game only opens up a percentage of missions for full reward at any given time. Your grey (gray for USA brothers) main missions should have a blue GMP listing indicating you will receive less-than-full reward if you re-do that mission at that particular time. What I've noticed is I'll do a mission for full reward, then the reward is cut in half if I try to do it again before it is "white". If I do it anyway, the next time the reward will be halved again--meaning you get only a quarter of the full reward.

also, I've completed all 10 main missions that show, i haven't checked off every box on every mission though. And Ive done a few side missions. When will new main missions open up? How do I progress? I feel stuck.

You don't need to check all the boxes, no.

Hmm if you're ready for mission 11 then....oh I know what it is. Hop on your horse and head to Aabe Shifap Ruins, north of the supply depot. Once you get there, you'll want to develop a certain type of weapon if you haven't already. I won't say anymore to avoid spoilers. The last two Afghanistan missions will take place in the Northern part of the map.

Keep playing Side missions until a new main mission pops up. Sometimes missions come in the form of radio communication from Ocelot.

Dont worry about the extra objectives on the main objectives. Just play the main missions and ignore the boxes. Return to the boxes once you have the overpowered gear you need. Some boxes are hard as hell to accomplish. For the most part, they come as ????????????? for a good reason. Just enjoy the main storyline and play how you want.

Technically you can avoid that mission if you use crack located north of guard post 06 to get closer to side ops 82 starting location - which reminds me that you need to complete important side ops (marked yellow in side ops list) in order to advance in story. Using that route requires you to complete side ops 48 or run for your life if you don't wish to complete it.
