Stars Norman Reedus. It's basically a video announcing the title of the game - there's nothing much yet. No gameplay yet.

I liked that mgs and mgs3 appeared more straight forward but there was more under the surface without it being bonkers. With Death Stranding, it already looks kinda hard to comprehend. Hopefully the pay off of all this confusion is adequate. Kojima kinda likes to jerk us around. The mgsv pay off of "she's the antithesis of female characters because she breathes through her skin" or "chico plugs his earphones into his chest because he listens to his heart and he dies off screen" were let downs.

if kojima is already talking about connectivity being a big theme for the game, then that should be the central theme, not one of fifty different themes all thinly spread like toast on severely burn butter...give or take a swap somewhere in that sentence.
I like this point and agree with it quite a bit. There has been an over-emphasis for a while on multiple themes and ideas and trying to pin them all together which leaves you with a muddled narrative because it's trying to stick all of these things together in a cohesive way but it can't. It's almost like writing an essay. You're asked to write an essay on one subject and perhaps bring in one or two or three texts. You're asked to write no more than 3000 words and you may get to the point where you have 4000 and you haven't even started editing or cutting out parts of it yet. You might say to yourself "well the more I have the better, right?" but there's a reason why you're given a limit and why you're asked to write about one thing and try and go into detail and delve into the significance or the surfacing of one specific theme. You can try to connect it to more texts and can find a connecting line within them all, but if you're able to focus on one single one (given that it has enough content in this field) and do it more deeply then the likelihood is that you will express it better and connect with it better without trying to pin multiple things together at once that aren't really fitting.

Can't wait to see what Kojima does off the leash. Hope this project isn't like a 2020 thing. With them licensing an engine hopefully things move pretty smoothly.

Cthulhu Mythos/ Dagon (1917), Lovecraft (remember Del Toro's "Insane" themes?):

(wiki) He escapes on a lifeboat and drifts aimlessly across the sea "somewhat south of the equator" until he eventually finds himself inexplicably stranded on "a slimy expanse of hellish black mire which extended about me in monotonous undulations as far as I could see.... The region was putrid with the carcasses of decaying fish, and of other less describable things which I saw protruding from the nasty mud of the unending plain." He theorizes that this area was formerly "a portion of the ocean floor..." thrown to the surface by a volcanic upheaval, "exposing regions which for innumerable millions of years had lain hidden under unfathomable watery depths."

And there's also a lot to say about Lovecraft's vision of "gods"

What do people think this game will be in terms of genre? So far it's looking really kind of a mystery/speculative drama or thriller kind of thing. Also wonder how gameplay will pan too.

Edit: Also Dirty-Duck perhaps you should pin this topic?

I'll keep coming
A new interview has surfaced, although it's mostly the same as the older ones, it does have some new info:

http://www.wired.com/2016/06/hideo-kojima-death-stranding-interview/

These parts got my attention:
Quote:

In Death Stranding, there will be the equivalent of sticks. But also, I want to tie people together with the equivalent of ropes.

So it’s a multiplayer game?

It’s not so simple. It’s a new system. It’s not as if today you have online gameplay where you fight with guns, and I’m swapping them for ropes.
Apparently it'll have online multiplayer gameplay, but it's going to be a new experience (seemingly).

And this part is even more interesting:
Quote:

Marketing-wise, you have to set a genre for your game, because people will ask if it’s horror or sci-fi, action or RPG. You need to put a tag on it. But it isn’t that limited anymore.
I bet it's all of the four combined. he already said it'll have lot of action elements, and from the looks of Norman's handcuffs, it'll have sci-fi themes as well. in an older interview, he said he's not willing to create games under the horror genre, but he wants to implement the sense of terror in his new games, as he did in TPP which wasn't a horror game. the world and atmosphere seen in the trailer also suggest that the game may have horror themes. as for it being RPG, he said the game will have a lot of interactivity, and the studio's job listings had a "crowd AI programmer" which could mean it'll have interaction with NPCs and some RPG elements too.

In short, I think we'll be getting a sci-fi themed RPG game which will have action and horror elements, and will feature online multiplayer, and since he was impressed by the online RPG concepts of The Division, I think he's going for the same approach for his new game.

You stop right fucking there and apologies Infiltrator . CIA is many things; a has been meme master, a baneposter who ran it to the ground so bad to where it stopped being funny, a complete and utter podcast tsundere but I will NOT allow you to call him a shitty Gary Stu who killed a 7 part book series. That's just mean and unfair.

Sorry if I sound angry but this was too much, even with the strike in mind.

This has probably already been asked, but what's up with the five figures floating in the air before the title fades in, and they fade away?

They look like people to me. I'm not sure what to make of it.

probably the antagonistic force of the game beyond whatever is happening, would be my first guess.

as for multiplayer, that would probably explain why kojima likened darryl streaking to division at one point. it would be interesting if its multiplayer were similar to that of journey, where its happening and you don't even know it until you run into another traveler.

i just hope that, like journey, my experience isn't lessened if i go solo.

Just looking at it, I'm assuming Norman Reedus is shifting through time and space and might be trying to find a way to tether himself and people close to him, might have even handcuffed himself to someone else. Baby was there with him for a bit but shifted with everyone else and was crawling to chillax with the dead whales.

Good guess. for the handcuff, he was clearly tied to someone else, since his other hand has no signs of being cuffed. I guess he was tied to the other guy (or girl?) who's crawling towards Naked Norman, seemingly what happens to the baby has also happened to that invisible individual, only his/her handprints can be seen, no sign of his/her physical existence. I think that invisible being is what wakes Naked Norman up, since he wakes up when the handprints get close to him and we can even see that there are no handprints on his body at first, but they appear all over his skin when that guy/girl seemingly approaches him, and touches him to wake him up. that invisible being can very well be one of the people who was close to him (like the baby, the emotion in Norman's face suggests that) and who was tied to him with the handcuff before disappearing.

I always thought the hand prints at the beginning were headed the same way the baby ended up heading, and that was towards the beached sea life with all the other wired up crabs and what not, but watching it again i am noticing the hands move around norman reedus and towards the baby. If he did teleport there, did he teleport WITH the baby? The baby is umbilical corded but so is everything else except norman reedus. I'm confused. I just hope there's a better pay off than breathes through skin. Right now I think it's like some matrix thing where those floating guys have something to do with living thing being wired up and norman reedus seems to know about it, since he doesn't seem too confused or scared when he sees them and he's unplugged, nothing but a scar where his wire should be.

Eh, I'm speculating in the general thread and being general in the speculation thread.

If he's in another time/place/dimension , the only thing that traveled with him are the science equation dog tags and his technological looking handcuffs. This might be before he gets that fancy sciency looking suit for better traveling.

I'm very curious about the aspect of dimensional traversing as well. If this is a fairly linear campaign, then odds are good that this is the one dimension we spend our campaign in, assuming that's the case, and that we aren't simply on Earth being invaded. The feeling I got was something similar. Norman Reedus' character has been transported to this strange place, and those floating individuals are perhaps the residents of this new world who transported Reedus there in the first place.

One thing I do hope, having revisited all of Metal Gear Solid a few times now, is that Kojima at least has better editors on his writing staff. Each game has shown some progression in terms of actual dialogue, redundancy and repetition. Phantom Pain, despite still having a number of lines which didn't translate well to English, was a large improvement on that front, as was Peace Walker, arguably more so. With any luck, this being a new IP completely, means that Kojima shakes off some of his 'Metal Gear-isms' in terms of dialogue and story. Because exploring new themes and having completely new stories is a wonderful thing, but it won't ultimately matter if they're all muddled by messy arc juggling execution and messier dialogue.

Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'No, you move'.
