Stars Norman Reedus. It's basically a video announcing the title of the game - there's nothing much yet. No gameplay yet.

The first time I saw naked Norman, he heavily reminded me of naked Raiden from MGS2. nudity, dog tags and handcuffs, his situation seems really similar to Raiden's when he was imprisoned in arsenal gear. I think he's naked for the same unknown (or nonexistent?) reason Raiden was naked in that section of MGS2, or perhaps it has something to do with him traveling through blackholes or to other dimensions, or maybe it's just a nod to the Terminator series where Arnold appeared naked when he traveled in time.

We finally know what Hideo Kojima's new game is called (Death Stranding), that it will star a space prisoner (?) played by Norman Reedus, and that it's very close to entering full production. And now thanks to a new interview with Wired, we actually know a little bit of what it's about.

According to Kojima, most modern action games have players fighting with the equivalent of sticks - swords, guns, and other objects that keep bad things away. The stick was mankind's first ever tool, so it makes sense to start there. But Kojima Productions will try to "tie people together" by moving on to humanity's second tool: ropes.

"What people are playing today in open-world action games, or linear action games, it will compare naturally to them," Kojima said. "It will feel familiar. But after an hour or two of playing, you will start to feel something different, something new that you haven’t played. The story is about connections, what you call 'strands' in psychology - how people are connected."

You may have noticed that all the dead sea creatures in that trailer had weird umbilical cord things too, not just Reedus and the baby, so expect to see more connections along those lines. Kojima's being cagey about what kind of multiplayer the game will include, saying only that it's a "new system", but you'll definitely interact with other players somehow. Probably not by lassoing them like a naked, oiled-up cowboy, but at this point there's honestly no telling.

Along with the obvious implications about being left alone on a weird alien beach, that's the "Stranding" part covered. So what about "Death"? "In arcade games, you have this notion of dying, putting another quarter in, and coming back," Kojima explained. "That hasn’t changed in the 35 years that I’ve been making games. In this game, life and death will be part of that, but I want to give a different twist to that notion."

Kojima has played around with the notion of perma-death in the past, but it sounds like that's not quite what he's talking about here. Maybe when you die you come back as a tiny little baby and have to find a full grown Norman Reedus to care for you? For now, we'll have to keep poring over that trailer for more answers.

don't know if old news, but i never saw it, and we're now balls deep in naked reedus discussion so why not. \_(:/)_/

Tbh, I think Kojima will make something like The Devision or Soul series where the focus will be not the story, but working together to beat the game.

Souls has a metric fuck ton of story just told in a subtle discreet manner. Doubt Kojima had that in mind

I don't know. I have a feeling he won't care about a linear story. Yeah, I know the Souls had some story. It wasn't the focus of the game.

Looks like I was right about the whole idea about the game taking place in the future, and Norman being a prisoner.

Perhaps their way of imprisoning people in the future is by tossing them into a black hole. It would make sense, if you think about it. Near a black hole, time is perceived much, much slower than what it really is. Someone in a 'black hole prison' could serve centuries of time in a few hours. That is, if the prisoner isn't torn to a string of atoms by tidal forces.

The trailer is set just after he had found a way to escape, and something is telling me that the baby isn't a clone of Norman, but it is Norman himself. The scar on his stomach is from the removal of the strange cord.

Compromise where you can. Where you can't, don't. Even if everyone is telling you that something wrong is something right. Even if the whole world is telling you to move, it is your duty to plant yourself like a tree, look them in the eye, and say 'No, you move'.

i skipped every cutscene in all the souls games. there's no story except for what i've made of it. and dark souls 3 is the story of sn4ke and cbj waiting for maxp to get in the game, cbj falls off of cliffs, sn4ke gets bored and leaves to play with cjb, and maxp has me follow him around while he kills everything and assures me that there is a story.

pretty much the greatest game story ever told.

Text boxes. Environmental cues. Small pieces of dialogue. Much more unique than "soliduuu sunekku in 10 awar cutscene!!11"

I just realized; a while back when Kojima revealed the whole LUDENS mascot, it was said that it was to be involved in his new project.

LUDENS totally coincides with the whole futuristic space prison setting of Death Stranding. Is LUDENS a sort of 'space police' force or something? I know the Japanese like their English words in caps, but is it possible that LUDENS is, instead, an acronym?

BROTHERS!!!!! I've been waiting for this.

A new Kojima game filled with mystery for us to let our imaginations run wild. I keep telling people that the best part of Kojima games is before the release. Ideas, speculation, conflict breeding conflict, new hatred arising, the forum becoming filled with ideas, emotional outburst, arguments etc. In the end 99.99% of us will be wrong. That said:

I think it's looking like you will not die permanently in this game. Death instead will be a passage to another dimension or experience. Kojima mentioned that death will be different in this game and that the difference will be a difference in stress level. If death isn't permanent then there would be no stress. The strands being the connections that you keep after death or when you are reborn. The dog tags I find particularly interesting because dog tags are used to identify you upon death. What will they mean in this case when there is the Schwarchild radius and Dirac equation written on them. Some have expressed that maybe our character has been sucked into a black hole given the Schwarchild radius reference. I like that idea. Maybe each dog tag represents an experience our character has died through only to "keep coming" back. What I also find interesting is that Reedus appears to have come back naked except for those mysterious handcuffs, the a a umbilical cord and those dog tags. I'm assuming that those three thing are the "strands" of connection he has with his previous existence.

I'm wandering if death will change how we view things. The poem in the trailer was interesting too:

To see the world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour

Hmmm.. All a matter of how we perceive things based on space and time. Maybe related to the Dirac equation

All in all very interesting stuff that makes me want to get into studying some quantum physics
