So you've been in two of this year's biggest movies - I mean, whatever happens, Rogue One's gonna be huge - and you've done a slew of smaller indies. And now, just recently, we found out you're getting into video games, with Hideo Kojima's Death Stranding.

Yeah, yeah! Really, I am.

I'm sure you can't talk much about the plot, but--

No, but (laughs), it's very intricate. I mean, you know (Kojima). He's a very brilliant man. I mean ... the stuff he told me? I only understood some of it.

(Laughs)

There was a lot of (mimes being baffled) "What?" I have to see it before I understand. Because with Death Stranding, he's creating something completely new.

Were you familiar with Kojima before you got the call? I mean, are you a gamer?

Not as a gamer. But then people told me and showed me things, and I was like, "Oh, yeah, I've seen that before." And when I told my son he was like, "What?!" (laughs)

I bet. "You gotta do this!"

Yeah, absolutely. But I also saw the trailer he had done with Norman Reedus, and I thought that was spectacular just from the standpoint of an actor. The emotion, the feeling of it, the sensuality in what he does. Without even being a gamer, I was like, this is crazy, what he's doing. I loved it.

I almost feel like I just want Kojima to make the leap to making films, y'know? I know that's not interactive, so it's an entirely different medium, but--

Well, in a way, he is making films. He's creating his own worlds.

Fair.

And he's letting us be the director, in a way.

Most, if not all, of your work in Death Stranding is going to be motion-capture.

All of it, yeah.

You don't have extensive experience with that, I'd imagine, right?

Well, I did some motion-capture on Rogue One, and some on Doctor Strange. There were certain things that we had to use that for, that had to be replaced. I mean, you can do a lot stunts, you know? We can fall from four floors. But we can't do it for one hundred floors. So for that, we did some motion-capture. For those last ninety-six floors (laughs).

Right.

So I've done some, but not as much as I'll do on Death Stranding. This is all in.

some things to note:

- tentacle lecter wasn't on the project until after the first trailer.
- "i only understood some of it." sooooo 10 to 1 odds we're looking at yet another convoluted mess of what-the-batchrist is going on...
- maddy mads really wants to be in a zombie movie to "chop zombies the fuck up."

I'm going to be sad if mads gets skull faced and is under used and has no boss fight.

...

Or I'll be really happy when he yells, "WHOOOOO?"

that's the thing that i'm curious about, if boss fights are a thing.

mgsv had great boss fights, but these days, in a lot of graphically enhanced games like this, most 'confrontations' aren't as hands on as that. look at uncharted 4 for example. the best looking game i've ever played to date, and what constituted as boss fights were glorified qte segments, and shit ones that, except maybe rafe.

i wanna hope that's not the case here, that the engine itself doesn't limited that kind of hands on gaming, and that we actively go head to head with maddy mads (yes, that's my name for him now).

that said, he also noted he'd be going all in with mocap, and not just facial capture, so mads being mads, there's a good chance kojima will take advantage of his more physical talents, such as martial arts and movement. (remember, the season 2 fight between maddy & morpheus was genuinely them from start to finish.)

This is pretty interesting. Norman said something similar as well, looks like Kojima's giving the actors a lot of freedom which might be a very good thing. would be the first time Kojima's doing such a thing, and both Mads and Norman are amazing actors so they could make good use of their talent here.

Kojima already said Mads is a rival to Norman's character so I guess we'll be seeing him a lot in the game, and since he's described as a rival, we'll probably be encountering him several times throughout the game. the character design alone suggests that we'd be facing him in a boss fight, be it a shootout or CQC fight, or a mix of both.

He appears to be a PMC operator and a war vet, I imagine he'll be a very tough opponent in both gunfights and close range combat. and that's only his abilities as a soldier, he's obviously got some great supernatural powers so God knows how powerful he'd be as a boss. anyway, I'd love to see him kick Norman's ass in close range fights, he's got amazing skills and since most MGS games had mocapped CQC scenes, I think we'll be seeing a lot of them here as well.

Kojima did say there would be traditional fighting (stick), I wonder exactly what the rope option would be.

Spoiler: click to toggle

that was the deaf stranding beta. but then daniel craig said he would rather slash his wrists then continue posing naked for kojima a second longer.

there would be an interesting dynamic if the enemies have guns, and we have "sticks" or whatever the christ that's symbolic for. adds a layer of vulnerability we don't often get, and really encourages stealth since kojima did state deaf stainers has stealth in it.

...most likely, however, we'll just have our own guns. maybe the babies are like our mark 2's. \_(:/)_/

btw, i'd knock you for the hannigram gif, but i have to give props for the consistent tentacle lecter theme you have with these images and the maddy mads love all around, soooo...

probably not.

the thing to remember is that there's a real difference between voice actors and celebrities. voice actors, not to knock or talk shit, but don't have publicists or proxies to go through just to set shit like this up. it's why yongyeaokay could arrange interviews with hayter, randolph and the skullster, but not kiefersnake.
