Asked what kind of game Death Stranding is, Kojima said, "You can think of Death Stranding as an action game." The goal is for Death Stranding to be "very intuitive" so that players can jump in easily. At the same time, Death Stranding will offer a "certain new type of depth." Overall, Death Stranding aims to be "something that [players] might not have seen before," Kojima said.

In terms of its openendedness, Kojima said, "You have a lot of freedom of choice to do what you want to do and you can get in vehicles and so on." He added: "If you are a fighter, there's plenty of opportunity for that. If you're not that type of player, there are other ways to play this game."

Death Stranding will offer some kind of "strands" concept. Here is how Kojima explained that:

"This is my 31st year in the games industry and I've been deep in action games across that time. In action games, generally, the player has a gun and plays against enemies in a single-player environment--or they take it online and play against other players in a competitive environment. They join in together with guns--[laughs] it's almost always with guns--to take down a stronger opponent. In this game you can do that but I wanted to go a little deeper beyond that with something that doesn’t focus on a weapon like a gun and that's what has a connection to the strand concept."

Regarding Death Stranding's online element, Kojima said this will be "different versus what most people expect from an online game." Whereas some games have separate and distinct campaign and online modes, this may not be the case for Death Stranding. "A lot of games have a 'campaign mode' and once you're done with that you take it to the online mode. This game is not that kind of structure."

Kojima added Death Stranding will not force players to go online.

"If you want to play the game standalone, without an online component, that's perfectly fine," he said.

So, does that mean co-op is a thing?

We have arrived.
Sounds like the exact same spiel and buzzwords always used by Kojima. I'm not trying to be a downer on it either, it just genuinely is the same thing he always says.
Watch this space.

I sometimes think Kojima's entire understanding of the English language is buzzwords he heard watching interviews with Spielberg and Kubrick.

Yeah, Kojima promised things before...

Also, didn't he say the game WON'T be open world? I'm interested in what he does with gameplay. It looks like it won't be your standard shooter.

I just hope he doesn't do another MGSV and wastes money on expensive actors and time on posting food picks and dinners with those same actors. Lay off the social media and get to work.

To be fair, the actual game side of things isn't Kojima's job. It's KojiPro, and they're the ones typically busting their jumps to make the games a thing, like any developers.

Story wise, ideally, the story would already be done before development started, so who the Batchrist knows?

If it is an open world game, I hope that it will be more interesting than TPP's. I feel like too many games have unnecessary open worlds these days.

One thing TPP's open world did right was complement the Main Ops. So, at the end of the day, all I care about is how well the open world complements the main missions themselves. And since Death Stranding looks way more atmospheric with it's WWII era crumbling buildings and ghost baby beaches, if it can do the Arkham City thing and encourage exploration in favor of finding interesting / creepy shit, that would be appreciated.

Yes, I agree with that. Although, even if the map is detailed, I would love it if there were actual things to do in it.

Well, there's the thing with open world games.

The activities are either The Witcher 3, Deus Ex and Arkham City, where there's actual side plots and mini stories to engage in. Or, they're every other Open World game where all the dude shit is the same shit you do in the main game already. Liberating outposts, fetch quests, etc. this is all old hat.

With TPP, the Side Ops were pretty much the latter, so unless co-op is a big thing, odds are, that won't change.

I'd really prefer it to be like Arkham City, Deus Ex or The Witcher 3. In MGSV, I think that the repetitive outposts liberation thing worked well because the gameplay mechanics were varied and interesting. You could change the way you played every side-missions. If Death Stranding is a TPS, the side-missions need to be more than outposts liberation for it to stay interesting.

I aqree, as is the case with multiplayer.

I hope Kojima learns a lesson from Phantom Pain and doesn't attempt an Open World unless he can really put in the manpower to make it substantial
Snake turned the polished brass knob and slid the door open with a loud creak. He was hit with a revolting stench of alcohol, ash and sweat and the site of a destroyed office, with smashed decorations, upturned furniture and torn papers. Emerging from the desk was an absolute wreck of a man, with a shimmer of liquid dripping from his crusted lips. His eyes were red and out of focus, his hair in random, whispy knots. His three piece suit was stained with streaks of water and his vest buttoned in the wrong places. His tie was undone, thrown over his neck like a noose in the gallows.

Did you know I'm novelising Snake Eater? Check out my progress here.
