Among your group of knucklehead friends, live it the fuck up and be as dumb "freespeech" as your little heart desires. Among the rest of the world who hardly even knows you, SECURE YOUR SHIT. People don't understand what freedom of speech really is and use it for secret bigotry.

In other words just be decent in public places.

I can't stand it when people have double standards for things like this. For example, the touchy subject of black people being able to say 'nigga' and 'cracker' but white people can't say either of them. I believe that anyone of any age or colour can say whatever they want, because the very notion that someone can or cannot say something, do something, or look a certain way based on their ethnicity or the colour of their skin is absolutely outrageous, and it's the basis of the old system we've fought for so long to get rid of.

tl;dr Martin Luther King Jr. isn't proud
Never seen a white guy complain about not being able to use the word ''cracker''.

Your entire point relies on the fallacious idea that white people and POC have been historically treated the same and that these words are absolutely without historical context and meaning. It's bullshit. It's not for you or I to decide when it's okay to use these words; it's in the hands of the people most affected by them.

Again, between you and your friends do what you want. There's common ground there - but the fight for the right to say ''nigga'' in public or whatever derogatory term folks feel like using is one that garners no sympathy for me.

...Burger King?

Retard is a word I've used in my life a lot when I was young. Middle/high school age. It was really just a synonym for "stupid" to me. I never had anyone tell me it was offensive, but I stopped using it when I made the connection:

Hey this group of people (being the mentally handicapped) have historically been called retarded. By calling people retarded, I'm insulting this group in a roundabout way.

So it just fell out naturally. The term faggot is one I used when I was in middle school as well. I never even knew the meaning of the word until late high school. People just started using it as an insult that was a combination of stupid and bitch and me, being 12-14, just went with my peers. I was told it was a "bad word" later on and stopped using it before I even knew what it meant.

The others I've never used in real life.

At the end of the day, those who tend to use such terms cry "Freedom of Speech!" a lot. That's fine, as legal punishment for saying these words is just as silly as legal punishment for having a plant and smoking it. But freedom of speech doesn't protect one from social consequences. A lot of society has deemed the words as undesirable in most situations and people may avoid/shun those that do. At the end of the day, context will matter and only those in your circles will know you and how you use words.

Well using "people of colour" is not only mis-identifying an entire group of people who want to be called black/brown/whatever, but it's also often used to group together ethnic minorities as a distant 'other', away from white people.

"People of colour" is more like "the car of a gradient which is not a shade of white" tbh.

It's all very individual and personal though, I have a family friend who hates the term POC and would rather be called black and I also have one who uses it freely. Just talk to the person you're friends or in a conversation with about how they feel about the words being used. It ain't hard.

no no no

I mean I have heard people say:

"don't say coloured people! cuz it's offensive! say people of colour!"

and I find it utterly Ludacris...

what's also funny is here in Britain there's some sort of either legal department or lobbyist group that refers to BEM, (black and other ethnic minorities) and I'm thinking why are you specifying black as if they're fucking unicorns or something???

People of colour is just the latest "hey i'm down with the agenda" lingo like most post-modern so called progressive crap that's ironically racist, like making Christopher Priest write only Black characters in Marvel when in the 90's he wrote, Spider-Man and Captain America like any other writer, in 2018 he's the BLACK writer.
Waiting for Shenmue III like...

i've tried to stop my use of the word retard for that reason. if you're against using the obvious slurs, you can't really still use retard and be logically consistent. ofc when i'm out on the road i'll still have an urge to call other drivers retards sometimes but i don't vocalize it anymore at least. i just call them mouthbreathers or jerkoffs instead now.

i'm jealous of brits and aussies in that cunt doesn't apparently have the same sexist connotations there as it does in the states. it's such a great word that really doesn't need to be considered a sexist slur. imo bitch is way worse on that front. a lot of americans don't realize how cunt is a more casual word pretty much everywhere else, so using it here can get you in some trouble.
As someone who suffers from hay fever I find your slur "mouthbreather" grossly offensive.
